The Jared Odrick Conundrum

#41

Quote:Here's the problem with that: You're trusting a coaching staff to know when a player is ready to contribute even though said coaching staff has proven to not know what they're doing.

In previous years, they forced their players to play in a style that doesn't suit their skill set instead of changing it to put them in a place to succeed. You know who coaches to their players skill set and changes their defense? Patriots.

Jack is just one example for this year. Check out the previous years where we are near the very bottom to see how much coaching matters. I see a Dallas defense with holes at every level yet they still make plays and are 4-1.

Actually, I posted in another thread how the acquisition of talent, via the draft tilted towards the offense until this year. The things Bradley noted as being part of why the defense under performed has held true. They said they needed a ballhawking FA to keep cyp in position. True. They needed a long, athletic corner. True. They've started a 3rd round rookie and he has been key to our pass rush. If they haven't been wrong in the utilization of the other rookies drafted with Jack, why would they be wrong there?

If you don't have the players to play your defensive style, change the style until you get those players. Forcing them to do something you know they're not capable of does not make sense.

They're starting Yannick because they missed out on Vernon. If they had gotten Vernon, I doubt Yannick would be seeing the field at all. He is playing because we literally have no one else and it just so happens he's good. Jack should have been starting since week 1 but instead, they put slow man Skuta in there.

This coaching staff also continually has their lineman guard position players and they routinely get burned. This defense is not disciplined (case made by the amount of penalties) and I believe a different HC would be able to take this defense to an even higher level.

I think what's getting lost is that the defense has had woeful talent the last couple of years. Changing schemes would not have saved the majority of players acquired. If they would have gotten Vernon of course he would have started; he's a veteran and he would be commanding a hefty salary. This in no way means they were forced to start Yannick. He's obviously earned it with his play, something wash saw as a possibility when he worked him out privately.

Again, with us playing nickel as often as we have over the course of this month, how much of the field would be have seen to make a difference. He certainly isn't playing above either Poz nor Smith. The best chance was against the Colts who routinely run 2 TE personnel, thus allowing us to stay in base d and keep jack on the field.

If you're talking about having Yannick drop into a zone, that's not at all uncommon. It also helps the defense blitz without having someone like Poz manned up against a wr (something I think we all never want to see again). If you're going to blitz, you have to pick either to run zone behind it or man.

As far as penalties, there have been some head scratchers for sure, but we can't discount the number of outright bad penalties that have given our opponents new life on a drive. That has nothing to do with discipline or coaching. It's also something a new coach would have to contend with. Taking a unit from 24th to 7th is impressive and speaks to the coaching. If, insert your favorite coaching name here, accomplished the same feat, we would all be championing his genius.

Quote:I like his passion.  And isn't he really good at stopping the run?
He also gets sacks. He was the only player to get a sack in our first game of the year.

If he has been paid his guaranteed money by the end of this season I would release him. We need a smaller pass rusher that can rush the passer and stop the run at the same time. Odrick is better of at 3-Tech DT.

Quote:Move him inside to DT not that hard. Next year our starting D-Line should be

Fowler-Jackson-Odrick-Sheard

With Ngakoue coming in as a situational pass rusher and being rotated heavily. I don't think he's big enough to play DE in a traditional 4-3 for 3 downs so I don't think he starts. I think that's what people are missing in this whole thing, they are overlooking the fact Ngakoue is terrible against the run and is not big enough to play traditional 4-3 end for 3 downs all game. And you can't play him at linebacker because he doesn't have a linebacker's skillset. This is why he was a third round pick, and Fowler was picked 3rd overall. Anyway, I do agree that we should go to a traditional 4-3 front with a smaller DE opposite Fowler, so we need to sign a guy to fill that hole. Sheard is a perfect fit and he is similar to Fowler.

Ngakoue was a third round selection because Ramsey was a first round selection and Jack was a second round selection. Also Caldwell stated that if the two afformentioned selections weren't selected as selected, Ngakoue would've been selected higher. Plus coach Bradley stated that he plays the run much better than they anticipated...

Release him? Counterpoint: no.
You either die as a good poster, or live long enough to become the troll.

Or we could switch to a 3-4 and have all of our best players on the field at the same time?

But then Poz would be on the field more. Exposing us more to the pass.

If you think I offended you, don't worry, I meant to. #facts

I think Odrick's future might also be at DT next to Jackson... sadly I dont think we will ever see that 8.5 sack Senderrick Marks again
