I've worked retail. Yes you're expected to keep an eye on people and tell somebody if you see theft. They say if you feel comfortable, you can tell the person,  "I see what you're doing," but by all means they want you to avoid a physical confrontation unless you have been hired and trained as a security guard. Preventing someone from stealing a pair of shoes or a purse full of underwear is not worth the potential workman's comp claim. Of course people with common sense already know that.

I performed a backwards suplex on a guy once for trying to steal a bag chips out of the Subway store I worked at as a kid over on Neptune Beach. 



I had no regrets at that time. He ran off anyway. But that was maybe just a month into the job when I was 17 years old. Later on I would regret it when I realized many of my co workers at that time were taking cookies, sandwiches, chips, drinks, etc. for free without any penalties all the time. And they would try to justify it in the strangest of ways. "Well, the owner has a coke problem, so... F em"'. 

He wasn't the greatest boss to work for. I'll give them that. But you were still taking money out of his business which directly impacted our paychecks and potential bonus prizes he would give out every month if we nailed the inspection and passed with high remarks. He also had a kid to feed....
