Favorable and Not So Favorable Items for the Jags

#21

Foles biggest issue is durability. Marrone, and everyone else, knows this so he is sitting out. We had a durable but average starter before who we could play and felt needed the reps. Foles can "play" and can get hurt at the drop of a dime. You dont put your investment into that position until the games actually matter. Especially if your job and entire season could be doomed because of it.

We have a lot to clean up here in the next few weeks. I am not overly optimistic going into what will be a critical pre season Ponce De Leon Cup game this Thursday night vs. the hated Dolphins.

The Jags are definitely going to need points from their starting offense early in tomorrow's match-up if the coveted Cup is to be won.

Hopefully Foles is able to convince Marrone and company that he can be trusted to lead the offense for a few series in this one.

I'll refrain from comment on the commish. We've seen this board uprooted and moved in the recent past. None of us want to live through that again.

Unfortunately, once again it has been two steps forward and one step backward, so we can never get ahead. I'd like to think somewhere between 12-4 and 15-1 is our range for the regular season, but there are a number of items the Jags must muddle through in order to reach the dominance of 2017-18.

The Favorable:

1) The Jags caught a major break last week when the Chiefs preseason game was delayed due to weather. A 6:30 start was pushed to 7:30, and the Chiefs lost one hour of preparation time for their opener against us. As we all know, the NFL is not only a game of inches, but also a game of seconds and routines and for once mother nature was on our side. If the opener comes down to the last few seconds or the Jags utilize a rarely used formation in the preseason that now the Chiefs don't recognize, we could have a huge, huge advantage. Starting 1-0 in the NFL is huge and I truly believe that lack of preparation, the extreme heat, and a raucous opening day Jaguar crowd will doom the Chiefs.

The Non Favorable

1) I'm not sure what Nick Foles needs to do to get of out of Marrone's doghouse, but he sure better figure it out quick. While I understand that we have an established culture in Jacksonville and it's Foles job to fit in or get out, I just don't think Minshew is the answer. Marrone has made it pretty clear it's his way or the highway, and I'm wondering at this point if Foles, after all of his fanfare, makes it to week one of the regular season. This is highly, highly concerning. Marrone is simply not going to play those whose attitudes don't fit in and I for one am appreciative of his hard line stance this preseason. I don't recall any attitude issues that Foles had in Philadelphia, but perhaps they are a franchise that cuts corners and looks the other way.

2) Schedule....Once again, Goodell is clearly screwing us. One week on a Sunday at 12, the next week on a Thursday, then a Sunday off followed by a Sunday at 3:25. Then, after we finally play a few 12:00 games in a  row,  then it's hi ho, hi ho, its off to London we go to play at get this.....8:30 in the morning!!!! Then, after London, it's a mixture of 12:00 games and 3:05 games. How are we ever supposed to get in a routine????  It's bad enough the Jags have to play 11 on 18 each week, but I'm seriously starting to wonder if it's now 11 on 19....11 players + 7 referees + Goodell = 19.

3) Goodell. See point 2. Last year, when we were about to go on a run, he took us off a prime time game and moved us to the 12:00 slot. We just cannot get ahead with this guy. I am just hoping he doesn't call off week one because of the heat, or even worse, make us play the Chiefs at a neutral cooler, site. I see that New England has a night game in week one so it would not shock me if Goodell proposed moving the Jags-Chiefs game to cooler New England at like 11am...ORRRRRR, imagine Goodell moves the game back one hour to compensate for the hour the Chiefs lost to allow them time to catch up. It's just ridiculous we have to go through this or have these thoughts go through our heads.

We have a lot to clean up here in the next few weeks. I am not overly optimistic going into what will be a critical pre season Ponce De Leon Cup game this Thursday night vs. the hated Dolphins.

two steps forward and one back is the recipe for a ton of punts. I am drafting Logan Cooke in my fantasy league this year. I was burned by drafting Bryan Anger #1 overall a few years back, but sounds like this is a can't miss selection. Thank you for the prognostications Mr. 1JAGSFAN!

Why in the world why wouldn't Foles be playing if it wasn't attitude based? He's plenty talented.  Do you understand anything about sports?

Marrone is being cautious with Nick Foles. So cautious that we're planning to trade for David Fales, and then let him get injured so Nick Foles will not get injured. The football gods will very well be fooled by this. Since nobody really remembers David Fales is even playing in the NFL (Sometimes even David Fales himself).

Omaha

While I truly believe that Foles is in Marrone's doghouse, I must admit that I'm kind of losing hope in him as well considering Foles is not even in the Top 100 Rankings with regard to his preseason stats. On the bright side, Foles does take care of the ball a lot more than Bortles and has shown that based on his 0 turnovers in his 2-game tenure with the Jags.

Regarding KC gaining an extra hour, that may have been an issue had Marrone not countered that by getting the Jags an extra 5 hours prior to Week 1 by utilizing the stategy of flying out to London after the final presason game and then returning to Jacksonville (gaining 5 hours) on the Saturday prior to the KC game.

Also, I wouldn't be concerned about the week 1 game being moved to New England as the Jags have it in their contract that they can only lose 1 game per season in Foxboro and we usually save that for January.

He missed some games early in his career due to a shoulder fracture. He's had a couple other dings but it's hard to say he's got a durability issue at this point. He might get hurt but there's no particular reason to think he's injury prone or anything.

It's just been a while since he played a full 16.  He also was contemplating retirement for his arm/elbow issue and he's been bench riding for a few years, so it gives me pause.  If he was slinging it all game for full seasons then cool, complaining while riding the bench is like cmon bro.

I was able to show this post to my step son on the way to school this morning. We talked about how name calling is hurtful. For some reason everyone on this board calls me OP (must be an inside joke between some buddies) and not this guy calls me plain stupid.

I'll tell you what is stupid....benching your starting quarterback for the first two games of the preseason!

They don't call him Fragile Folesey for nothing.  Perhaps he can rebound like Freddie T did and move up to #2 on the Jags All Time List.
