I'll be direct.

Say we implement an intelligence test for voting.
Do you trust your government to make that test fair for you? Fair for all of your neighbors?

Mikesez trust the government for everthing except standards on who should vote.  I have to laugh.

On a more serious note, Jim Crowe laws were horrific, but that is not the same point.  People with no skin in the game today are voting on how much people with skin in the game should pay and that is an issue that should be addressed somehow.  It is very easy to say and vote for people that have more and are already giving more to give even more when you are contributing nothing.

I absolutely do not trust the government for everything.
I trust that all the people who counted the votes did so with minimal errors.  I trust that all the people collecting taxes did their best with the info they had.  I trust that our soldiers are doing their jobs by the book and not rustling the locals for bribes or the contractors for kickbacks.  I have this level of trust because I know there are levels of management in each case that watch out for any hint of corruption.

In fact most of the problem I see with our government today, is that most of it no longer has these layers of accountability.  It used to be if an official or a politician was screwing things up, members of both parties would make his or her life difficult until the problem was resolved.  But now the parties close ranks for their own.  And bad stuff about a Republican will be mentioned on CNN but not talk radio. And for bad stuff about a Democrat, the reverse is true.  So now the only layer of accountability is voters who listen to both sides and are willing to change their vote year to year. And there are fewer and fewer of those.

Unless we get some reform in this country, it will be easier and easier for a President to cancel elections or prosecute his opponents (which has the same effect).  We can start by making sure a President can never fire any inspector general.  But we have a lot more work to do besides that.  Trump didn't know what he was doing and lives under the illusion that he really was loved and adored by all.  Biden probably still thinks he's living in the 1980s when we didn't have these problems, and he'll be blind to the possibilities of how a modern president can abuse power.  I get worried about whatever young, ambitious guy is coming next down the line.

It was us.
We already did it.
Individual states in the US already tried this, with the intent of making the test hard, but letting white people have a cheat sheet or otherwise evade the test.
It fascinates me that whenever I have an idea, I get these lectures about how I need to be skeptical of how my idea would be implemented by Americans with bad intentions, but then those same people lecturing me come up with intelligence tests for voting being a good idea somehow.
Y'all either
Ignorant
or
Hypocritical and White supremacist.
I hope it's ignorance.
Why did you bring race into it again?

I don't want stupid people of any race voting. If you need someone to tell you when to register, where to go, how to fill out your ballot, fill out your ballot, etc you shouldn't be voting.

Sorry, if there was literally any other story in all of human history about intelligence tests and voting, I would have told that one.  But there's only one, and it's racist.  Truly sorry.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.
