They never have. Hence their history of teams moving. What good is one of the largest TV markets if no one tunes in. I guess the TV contract doesn't reflect actual viewers.

Not sure the NFL is concerned with immediate results.

 

They look at NY and see two teams, then look at LA and say: why not?

 

...all without concern to difference in lifestyle and interests.

 

They see a NY that they have not yet reached.

 

It appears their priority is to get there first, then figure out the rest later.

 

I can't disagree with them on that potential, but a challenge may be that instead of absence making the heart grow fonder for the NFL... it instead reinforced attitudes from potential fans that they can do without NFL football.

 

I think it can work in time.  But there needs to be patience and smart marketing.

They are not accounting for is the actual total amount of people in the LA area compared to the St. Louis area.

This year in LA 16.1 percent = 3,007,480 homes

 

Last year in St Louis 17.7 percent = 495,600 homes

Some thoughts:

 

Though I don't think the NFL should have given the Rams approval to leave St. Louis,  the information that Teal Curtain provided is the main reason why there's an NFL team in Los Angeles this season and there isn't one in St. Louis.

 

Most fans living in the LA area that root for other teams aren't going to become Rams fans or fans of a 2nd team that might move to LA. 

 

Long time Rams fans and young people that haven't made a true commitment to a favorite team are the people that the Rams need to win over for the long term.

 

The history in LA is a high octane passing game,  with a star QB,  is what sells the most in that market.    It would be a huge setback for the Rams on and off the field if Jared Goff doesn't come close to his draft billing over the next few seasons.
