Here's a map. It looks to me that Turkey was, at best, overzealous in defending its oddly-shaped border. That's assuming the Russian jet was even where Turkey claims it was.

Turkey has been buying stolen oil from ISIS for many months, and of course the U.S. military is fully aware of this and did nothing to stop it.  Business Insider reported on this in July.  The oil is delivered to a company owned by Turkish President Erdogan's son.  Russia recently bombed the tanker convoy so Turkey made up a story about Russia invading its air space.  What Turkey is claiming is not physically possible - the speeds and times are not compatible.  They are lying and Obama is backing the lie.  They are willing to lie to start a world war.  Think about that.

17 seconds that gave me pause. I'm not a military guy but 17 seconds doesn't seem like a long enough time in the wrong airspace to shoot a plane down? That's not even enough time to get clarification theyre in the wrong?

I heard or read, not sure which, that in cases like this, the country whose airspace has been violated will scramble a couple of fighter jets and escort the offending party out of their airspace.   That would seem like the prudent thing to do.   I recall a few years ago the Russians shot down a Korean Airliner that had strayed into its airspace, and the world was outraged.   Obviously none of us know all the facts, but it sure seems like in this case, Turkey overreacted.

I'm also a little surprised Russia hasn't retliated yet. If it was Iran that shot down and killed one of our pilots inbetween iraq and Iran I'd expect we would be bombing them back to the stone ages pretty quick.

Putin knows that a war with Turkey would instantly escalate into a war with at least part of NATO. He's not going to push that button over one downed jet. Now, if Turkey tries that stunt again...

Russia has struck back. They hit a Turkish supply convey they said was supplying ISIS.........

Instead of a sign that says "Do Not Disturb" I need one that says "Already Disturbed Proceed With Caution."

It's smart not to strike back.   Russia has the high ground now, diplomatically.  They are the offended party.   They are probably already extracting some sort of concessions behind the scenes as the price for not escalating.
