Passing it risks an incomplete pass, which stops the clock and doesn't gain you anything, or an interception (which might have been the more merciful ending, actually).

 

Running it if you're already within a comfortable range allows the back to shift a little left or right and give the kicker the angle he wants, it's a safer bet to pick up a few yards, and the odds of a fumble are lower than the odds of a pick if the running back has been told that priority one is to protect the ball and all else is secondary.

 

I'd have run it there if I had confidence in my kicker.
