Quote:How is violent rap music any different than violent TV shows like Sons of Anarchy or Breaking Bad?

It's not I don't see anyone saying it is. The culture of violence is predominate in our society no one can deny that.
2 cops killed. Media thinks cops over react to situations. Wait...we are talkin rap " music" here...nevermind.

Tv say cops over react

Just cuz dude be sellin crack.

They pull gun and like to use it,

All cuz some stupid rap music?

Chorus to follow...
Didn't that poser Ice-T have a song about killing cops? It was some horrible, misguided attempt at heavy metal, if I remember correctly. I laugh every time I see him on TV playing a cop. He's the real OG for sure.

That said, I never have believed music has much of an influence on behavior. Which is more likely, an already violent person identifies with violent music, or a peaceful person becomes corrupted by violent music?

I spent a good part of my youth listening to bands like Death, Slayer, Obituary and Possessed. The lyrics of those bands would make any gangster rapper look like a choir boy. And I'm certainly no violent criminal.

Just like people trying to put some blame on Marilyn Manson for the shootings at Columbine.
oh well
Quote:Just like people trying to put some blame on Marilyn Manson for the shootings at Columbine.

Yep. Also like blaming Ozzy for some kid's suicide.
And you progressives wonder why the men in blue are on edge?  If the police officers come to the vehicle with guns drawn you gripe and moan, scream and holler.  If they don't this crap happens.  You criminal apologist have made this possible.  Congratulations.

You're making quite the blanket accusation there.
Quote:Let's be fair to country music. It has historically confined its support of violence to the domestic variety.
Wow really?  Care to provide examples?  I will gladly admit to being wrong, but I can not recall a single country song in the last 30 years that says slapping your wife or girlfriend is ok.
Quote:How much of "gangsta rap" is describing what they've seen in their lives, as opposed to glorifying it?

Besides, absent any other evidence, why is this inferred in this thread?
Regardless of whether they're just talking about their life or glorifying it is not relevant to a youth population who sees it as being glorified. And to say it's not shows that you know nothing outside of your socioeconomic group.

Also, you all keep saying crime is down. That's true for the crimes we know about. There's a lot of stuff that goes down that no one ever hears about. And that goes for every socioeconomic background and every crime.

Define " progressives". You think anyone doesn't sympathize with the cops? Well, maybe some don't...but you actually think its according to beliefs, whether its liberal, conservative, progressive, socialistic, communistic or what have you?

Your brush is waaaay to wide that thou paintst with.

I agree for the most part...but David Allen Coe has some doozies. And his long hair can't cover up that redneck. Can't post his stuff here, I'll get the boot again. It's a family friendly board I was told, so no DAC here.

I think his stuff is done tounge in cheek. I think he's more of a parody act, like Steel Panther is currently doing with hair metal.

No I am not.  Progressives are very quick to throw the term racism at the drop of a hat and go out of their way to prove it.  Look at the mess surrounding Trayvon Martin.  What did the liberal media do?  They posted a picture of a 13 year old child who was shot by a white man.  They did this when the facts were it was a 17 year old male and the person pulling the trigger was actually hispanic/caucasian.   Once the trial was held, and the feds reviewed the case they found no criminal wrong doing.  (For the record I personally believe George Zimmerman overreached his position as a community block captain)  How about Micheal Brown?  What did the media do?  An unarmed black youth was shot and killed by a white police officer.  How did that turn out?  Two suspect matching the description of two individuals were walking down the middle of the street, were stopped by the police.  One of them chose to challenge the police to the point that he actually assaulted the officer and reached for his gun.  The other perpetrator (a career criminal) created a story that his buddy was walking up the the police car with his hands up and the white guy shot him for no reason.  How did that turn out after all of the facts came to light and the Feds reviewed the case?

Progressives are very quick to say that police brutality happens at the drop of a hat.  They have put the boys in blue at a disadvantage where they are second guessing their every action.  Again, after running the tags on this vehicle had they shown up with guns drawn and nothing was found the screams of racism would have been loud and clear.  Instead they showed up unprepared and now they are both dead.  Let that sink in.  Progressives refuse to acknowledge that certain individuals fit a profile because it may include race.

When I hear a progressive acknowledge these facts I will gladly retract my broad paint brush.

You provided an example of 1 country artist  that had one huge hit.  His other stuff was racist yes but did he advocate killing police officers?  I did not listen to his stuff after hearing some if his musings so I really cannot say if he did or not

Apparently you are listening to talking heads and deriving a conclusion about millions based on what you heard. We have progressives on this very board who posted nothing like what you've described.

As for the case in question in this thread, you are arriving at conclusions to which even the authorities involved have yet to arrive. Maybe you are generalizing a bit.

Man, you're forcing me to play a card I hate. One of my best long time friends is a black man. Yeah, I know, it's a cliche, but in this case it's true. We lived across the street from each other in Riverside from the late 80s through 2005. Not a ghetto, but not the nice part of Riverside, either.

We talked about "Cop Killer", the song most folks are talking about when they claim "all" gangsta rap glorifies violence against police. He explained to me how everyone he knew understood it wasn't advocating shooting cops, it was just sung as a first person's account of resentment over police brutality, a well documented problem in L.A. at the time. He just laughed it off as just another example of "white folks assuming black folks are too stupid to interpret art." As Ice-T once said, "If you think I'm a cop killer, you must also think David Bowie is an astronaut." Since that conversation I've reviewed some rap lyrics and found a lot of things about which I was offended, but very little advocacy of killing policemen.

Do you realize how popular gangster movies were decades ago, when Al Capone and Pretty Boy Floyd were characterized as heroes of the common man?

I held a lot of preconceptions about African-Americans before meeting him and his family that were disproven time and again. Maybe I don't know as much as you about other socioeconomic groups, but I know more than you might expect.

1.  I am basing my opinion on what I have observed.  If you feel that I have erred then please speak out against those that have provided me with the information I used to derive my conclusion.  You can find those sources on CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX News, and MSNBC.

2.  You are correct.  I am generalizing.  I do this however based on the fact that progressives (in general) give a free pass to those that commit crimes and persecute the police before knowing all the facts.  To me the manner in which the liberal media presents these cases invites and encourages attacks on good, law abiding police officers, simply because they wear the uniform.

I seldom watch those "news" outlets, so I admit to ignorance. When I do, they seem the generalize about as much as you are doing here. So maybe they are influential after all.

And your sources are?  i ask because you portray every aspect of what i have observed by those institutions in your postings.
