Gregory 2nd

That would be incredible
When I said day 2 I was kinda thinking round 3 more than round 2 even. 36 is still pretty darn risky to me for a guy who failed two Nebraska drug tests in 2014, was threatened with being kicked off the team and (presumably at least) managed to stay clean for 6 months, but then as soon as the season ended in December was right back at it instantly. That's a scary pattern.

Simply put, as others have said, he failed the idiot test. Every single college player who has ever had any shot at the NFL knows you get drug tested at the combine. He 100% knew it was coming and still couldn't manage to restrain himself. Now he already has strike one in the drug program. I don't view this as a Telvin Smith one time thing situation that you can forgive and gloss over, this looks much more like a Blackmon, Josh Gordon, Dion Jordan type issue unfortunately.
Everybody want to get stoned!

I don't follow college too closely so I was unaware of the pattern at Nebraska. In that case, yeah 3rd or later would be more comfortable. Though I could still understand drafting him in the second because of pure talent. Whether that's smart or not is a different debate.
Didn't Telvin Smith fail a test last year? I think the Jags are happy to take a chance on these guys if they fall.

On the flip side, the new marijuana drug program changes do make are much more lenient...I remembered they raised the threshold to IOC standards for a positive test, but forgot they changed the number it took to get to a suspension. Still wouldn't take him at 3 obviously, but if he's there at 36 I would probably take the plunge and pray. Copied from @tealtalk's twitter post just now:

Yes.

He sure did, which is why he dropped to the 5th round.

I think it's fine to roll the dice on a guy in the 5th, but not sure if I'd pull the trigger on a guy like gregory in round 2.

Yes he did, but as has been stated already the circumstances are pretty different. I also think you have to look at each case on their own, and I don't think one Telvin Smith example is nearly enough proof to judge what Caldwell's standards on a failed drug test will be.

Oh man, I remember him falling but to the 5th? With him and Colvin we got some first round talent in the middle rounds. I hope this years draft provides more of the same.

So it last looks like you can fail 3 tests before a suspension if I'm reading that correctly. I think this one counts as fail number one, so he has two more tests before any suspension
Quote:Will be curious to see how much of an impact this has on where he gets drafted.
I'm wondering how these results impact the Jaguars strategy, especially trading down from 3.

On the one hand, I wonder if DE/LEO is the target in round one, would the Jaguars be less inclined to trade down or not as willing to trade down as far if Gregory is no longer a consideration, or might they be okay with trading down, knowing the drug test results will push him down some.
He's gonna slip HARD. No way were taking him now.

How long does marijuana stay in your system? He said he last used in December. Could it really linger 2 months? Why didn't he do anything to flush it out, given that he's already told coaches he was using?

He used to cope with injuries, apparently. What happens if he gets hurt again in the NFL? Will he resort back to it? This takes him off at #3. He's already got a 1 strike heading into the draft. Someone will take a shot in the mid 1st though. I think Dave would be open to taking a chance at Gregory, but not at #3.

Unless it's a hair follicle test, no one should test positive for marijuana two months after the fact.

I'm fine rolling the dice on him later, but like everyone is saying, taking him at 3 is not realistic.

Well that changes things, huh. Teams have known for a while, and some have said it's worried them and some have said it's not a major deal. I imagine for us it probably removes him from consideration, but maybe not. Will be interesting to find out.

I'm pretty sure he is off our list for the 3rd pick, unless he is there in the 2nd round and we didnt go pass rusher in the 1st, we drafted Telvin Smith but that was like 5th round.

Gregory was already last on my list of the top pass rushers I wanted us to draft so this just makes it clear

So a WR sized pass rusher on the wrong side of the substance abuse policy isn't worth taking 3rd overall?

It's a huge sign of immaturity and lack of self control.  Some of these guys know pretty much exactly what will happen at the combine, and they still can't keep themselves from doing stupid things.

I still think the policy is dumber than the player.  Can someone explain to me why they do a marijuana test in the first place?  Serious question.  I can't imagine who cares about this.  The only reason they care is because of the policy.  If the policy didn't exist, would this be even a minor concern?

What could make this interesting is if there's a trade down offer from one of the teams who have 2 first round picks. This might put us in a situation where our two biggest needs (DE/RB) meet the value of where they will be drafted (mid 1st) in Gregory (due to the test) and Gurley (due to the injury)
