Looking over the stats for our offense this past year, it's very easy to see why people are upset, they sucked! But, like many of have stated, they lack experience. The youth on offense is much better than what he have seen in the past, that's just my opinion haha. Did people really think this rebuild ride was gonna be easy?

Definitely. They'll probably want contract extensions and ice cream for all. Right?

Please excuse my forum inexperience. My first post didn't really relate to the op. But I agree, it's very important that we see growth.

in 2013 only 2 of the top 10 free agent Offensive Linemen hit the market. Not a single one that did change teams was an impact on their new team. History just shows getting an impact free agent Offensive linemen is next to impossible.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000...ve-linemen
2014 was even worse, find me the impact starter?
When the dust settles I don't expect to many quality 2015 Offensiveline free agents to hit the market, hopefully we can find one but they best shot is in the draft.
The best shot is in FA. The biggest gamble is in the draft. You want to talk about only 20% of the top FA linemen hitting the market. The odds of picking a top NFL lineman in the draft are even smaller. Only a few out of the dozens and dozens picked ever amount to anything, and if teams used your standard of giving up on them after a year and a half, those odds would get even smaller.
When the dust settles, don't expect any of our top picks to go to the oline. There are too many other areas that could use some young high end talent.

Quote:Fair evaluation, so the question is shouldn't the number 2 overall pick be able to make that play?
LOL, I feel like you know exactly what the answer to this question is, and are ready to pounce on my response!
There's really no right answer to this question. Of course LJ should have made the play. But, if you remember, he turned his head to see the blitzer, and then chose not to block said blitzer.
I mean there are so many areas of suck-i-tude on the offense, the minute to try to analyze 1 play or one player you realize that there are multiple layers of reasons. The player's talent. The player's experience. The lack of coaching. The lack of proper practice. The lack of actual productive time in the film room properly breaking down senarios that happen in games.
It's a poop onion. Each layer you peel off, the stinkier it gets, and all you can do is cry.
Fortunately, this poop onion is only concentrated on the offense.
I understand that the players need to step up. But our discussion began because I truelly do believe that the coaches should not be getting a pass on how bad this offense has been. Worst in Red Zone TD % in 2013, and 2nd worst in 2014 means that it's not just the rookies and O-line that are the problem.

We desperately need a either a quality OL or FS in the offseason. The improvement to the OL needs to happen. Seeing as how this is make or break for DAVE/GUS, you have to assume they will go full throttle in free agency as they have the most cap space and a rich owner who has simply give them the cheque book. I think we draft DL and linebacker, maybe even tight end. Gipson would be extremely huge but I feel as though Cleveland will screw us over for the second straight year in the off season. As previously stated, the team goes with Bortles. If he doesn't get protected the team goes nowhere. The defense can only take us so far. Lets hand it to them, they grew together and played well. Telvin Smith & Marks have been center pieces, sucks to see Marks tear his ACL the last game. I'm pretty sure if we get a FS in free agency, and Dave spends high picks on a DL and LB our defense is ridiculously stacked. Literally. It sucks we haven't found the FS yet on our team but lets hope it comes soon. This is it guys, heres to a great offseason, I truly do believe in Dave. Let him work his magic and I look forward to the potential studs he can maybe add to this emerging roster.

Quote:I could also see this happening. In the best case scenario it also involves us finding a sucker team to trade up, allowing us to pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick...This wouldn't be a bad idea. Then just spend your offseason money on either JPP or Jerry Hughes. Preferably JPP. Between JPP, Clemons, Davis and Branch the Pass rush/LEO rotation could be scary. Any way you look at it their are many different options and routes Dave could go.

Another draft and some good luck in FA we could be looking at 6-10 or 7-9

No but dont pretend that we didnt all expect at least one more win than last year.

Now that's realistic but not really acceptable either. In year 3 of a rebuild .500 should really be the minimum, but realistically we're at best shooting for 7-9 or 6-10. We need a miraculous off season to pull of .500 that's frustrating.

While it's too early to judge the 2014 draft class, I think in a nutshell that DC had a somewhat rough draft in 2013 (in an arguably weak overall class) but a much more successful draft in 2014. Of course we need more time to truly judge both classes but IMO DC is getting better as a GM (although 2 years is a small sample size).
At this point, I don't see him as the one to blame. The only way I would blame him is if Khan has given him the keys to the kingdom and (hypothetically speaking) he keeps Bradley around and GB ends up being a bust HC. If Khan has left that responsibility to Caldwell and he doesn't make the right moves as a leader then I do find him at fault. But, as far as talent, I'm OK with the overall progress he's made as a GM and I think he will get even better.

It's funny when we complained about Mularkey's stoic presence we were always told it's not about the rah rah crap. Now we have a rah rah HC and you don't see Oehser saying anything about it other than defending it. He's going to tow the company line no matter what in my opinion.

Quote:I don't think we as a fanbase put enough emphasis on how important good coaching is in developing talent...
The rookie excuse was acceptable untill december. The last 4 games, most our rookies had plenty of experience and "practice" to know what they were doing...
I think "practice" has been our problem, especially on offense. Our D started out terrible, but somehow we got significantly better over the year. Our offense was stagnant if not worse as time went on...
I'm not sure why this doesn't set off red flags for more people...
the d got better because Bradley took over the playcalling. That is a negative and personally i would let babich go but that explains the change in fortune and is a testament to Bradley... Not playing phili and a hot Phil rivers helped too
on offense we were stagnant because of henne and a total lack of running game. Bortles came in and made plays but also threw picks that lost us games. You cant not address that so they reigned him in a little and the picks dropped but so did the production
Im regularly wrong and am happy to admit it but i really feel we haven't seen what fisch can do. I also feel if we don't go 8 and 8 next year everyone except caldwell will get canned
if you don't believe in Bradley best to let him keep fisch as Bradley isnt going anywhere this year and if the offense stinks they will probably all get fired next year

Do we forget how far Gene Smith set this team back? Anyone remember the punter in the 3rd round? Please give Caldwell some time. He hasnt done anything remotely as bad as Gene Smith.

The rebuilding excuse is now out the window
This is the year David's plan needs to come into focus or it's time to make changes. That means if we really go into next season with the same group of linemen and they don't develop it's on David as much as Gus. If we still don't get the production needed out of the offense that's on David as much as Gus.
Honestly we need to draft heavy in the Offensive line and Secondary but that's just my opinion. Whatever David does is fine but I think most of us can fairly say in year 3 we've been patient and if it's still a 5-6 win team we should change leadership.
I've got no desire to watch this team struggle for 5 wins next year on the promise year 4 is the year. That screams Gene Smith all over again, fool me once.........
I'm hopeful but not optimistic, we're pretty much betting on the perfect off season to field a competitive team.
We have drafted 3 OL (Luke, Luke, and Linder) and 5 DBs (Cyp, Gratz, Colvin, McCray, Evans) in two drafts. Its a bit an indictment on Dave that we're still looking at those two spots despite the emphasis that he's put on that position in the draft. By the way, notice what's been missing in his past two drafts?
No DE and no DT so far.
This COULD bite him big time if our veteran guys in those spots declines quickly.

Year 3 time to stop shielding the current regime for the miss deeds of the previous regime.

Absolutely I agree, the positions we've devoted the most to fixing are the positions we are still in the most dire need of help. It's a hard spot we've painted ourselves into and that was my objection to David releasing everyone of Gene's guys so fast. Sure we needed to upgrade numerous positions, but the whole blow it up process makes the leap from rebuilding to competing so much more difficult and rarely works out in the time frame given.
