Quote:McElwain didn't have to take the job...he didn't have to agree to pay the $2 million....he had a good thing going at CSU and likely would have more job opportunities come forward in the coming year(s).

He took the job despite having to pay $2 million of his own money to take it...I'd argue that says a lot about how good the Florida job is perceived by the guy taking the job.

If he can prove himself at Florida as he has in his previous stops, he'll end up making plenty more money.

I see what you are saying, but it does seem a little messed up and a bad way to start for the guy you hire to have to pay $2 million to be your coach.
It's called negotiation.  That's why he's the AD and you and me are sitting here posting messages.

Imagine that. Sounds like he really wanted to coach at UF.

I think McElwain is a good hire but I do have a beef with Foley raiding CSU's coaching staff then nickel-and-diming them to shave the buyout. He then won't take his team to Denver to play CSU to offset the cost but makes them travel to Gainesville to pick up $2 million then makes his new coach cough up $2 million of his own salary to pay CSU too. He then proceeds to pay his new coach a little more than Pinkel, Bielema, and Richt but less than Miles, Spurrier, Malzahn, Sumlin and Saban.

Just seems like a rotten thing to do if it's the #1 job in the country.

Its a business. You're not going to pay more then you have to and as a good AD you will do what you can to get what you want at the lowest cost, and what you feel is good for your program.

Sure seems nit picky.

You think McElwain thinks that ?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a business and McElwain took the job and all that but nonetheless UF and Foley just seems chintzy in this deal.

McElwain could have stayed at CSU if he wanted but in life you have to walk through the door of opportunity when it opens.

I have many Gator faithful, Bull Gators who contribute $5k per year to the program, in my business who tell me the Univ. of Fla. is flush with cash and then they nickel-and-dime a coach they covet. SMH.

Probably not, but just saying... if you think about it, he is paying florida $2 million to be their coach. I can see chiefs point and me and chief don't agree alot.

Probably not? Most definitley not.

I see the points too, they just aren't good. Would you pay someone to work for you for $20 dollars an hour when they will do it for less? That is senseless. One of the main jobs of an AD is to handle his budget. He'd be a fool to pay him more then what someone is willing to work.

I don't think McElwain will really need to write a check for $2 million to CSU. No way his agent will let that happen. There's probably some terms there where it translates to CSU getting that $2 million somehow, but I am almost sure it won't come directly out of McElwains pocket.

I'm just saying it is weird for the coach to be paying $2 million to get hired by florida, the #1 job in the land. That is just my opinion.

Actually, you would be wrong. Look it up. He is paying CSU $2 million over a period of time.

Its called smart business.

Do you ever really want something new?

Do you go to the store to buy a TV and make sure you go to the store where it costs the most money because of how much you covet it?

Do you walk on a car lot and just take the car at sticker price?

Chief's and jts argument here is by far one of the dumbest things I've heard on this board.

I don't get what you are trying to get at? Him paying $2 million would only bolster the "#1 job in the land" you have so joyfully run with.

But please feel free to keep trying to denigrate it all you want.

Right. Why do you think I'm calling it the #1 job in the land?

Well largest buy out in history and there is an interesting article on yahoo talking about how CSU worked Foley in negotiations.

I've seen it, Forde is all about clicks. He's got some doozies about FSU too. CSU got a good deal out of it. They were smart with asking for and getting approval from McElwain's agent that large of a buyout.
