If the pocket is consistently collapsing, why not call a roll out? Bortles showed in the preseason his strengths are his ability to be mobile and keep his eye up the field. If this is his learning year, what's the point of giving him plays he can't check out of at all? Isn't it better to have him make mistakes, then I dunno, learn from them? Why "dumb down the playbook", when the only thing we have to gain is his on field knowledge of the playbook!? Our young WRs too, what will they gain by repeatedly painting from a limited palette?
Henne was horrible in his attempts to be a game manager and conservative QB. Now Fisch is doing his best to mold Bortles in Henne's image, to the detriment of the team. He's ignoring why we got the guy in the first place. Good OCs can build a playbook around their QBs strengths, and craft plays that add to it. Fisch is asking a rookie what he feels comfortable with, then scrapping the rest, what is that!? No one is going to learn anything by sticking with what is comfortable. Jedd's job is to evaluate the man and show him what he can do, not box him into what feels safe.
Part of this rebuild is seeing what works and getting rid of what doesn't. If this holds true, it's obvious that Fisch and Mallory need to be replaced.

"Bradley said Bortles did a good job with the checks, but also said he’d like to see more runs called where there isn’t an option to check out."
I'd like to see a winning lotto ticket in my hand. Just saying I'd like to see it doesn't make it automatically so.
That statement is not proof that Bradley actually ever followed through on it. Sure, it's a nice assumption and not one I'm necessarily prone to disagree with, but it's not
proof of anything.

Haven't they run a lot of rollouts with Bortles? It's only effective if you're able to run the ball well, and we've been pretty spotty in that area, so selling the play action in order to allow Bortles to move the pocket doesn't always work effectively.
Most of the people who cover this team recognize that Bortles seems to be thinking too much out there, and this is precisely what you'd expect from a rookie QB. That's why he's holding on to the ball too long, and why he's hesitant to pull the trigger at times. He played looser in the preseason and early on in his time as the starter. He's tightened up since then because most defenses now have film to look at, so they are learning his tendencies. As the interceptions (especially the pick 6 variety) have to be on his mind as he's letting the ball go. He's trying to avoid making mistakes, and in the process, he's hampering himself more than any play calling could possibly do.
The game will slow down for him, and when it does, we'll see him start to improve. He wasn't quite ready to start when they plugged him in, but there's nothing that can be done about that now. Water under the bridge.
I'm not sure if Fisch need to be replaced because I don't know what plays are being called compared to what actually transpires on the field. I've never been terribly impressed with the play calling, so if he goes, I don't see it as a big deal. But, i don't think he's the root cause of Bortles struggles.
As far as Mallory goes, special teams were actually a strength for this team last year. This year, not so much. Is that coaching, or is simply the result of having a very young bottom half of the roster to work with? Again, if he's sent packing, I don't see an issue.

I don't recall the last time they had BB roll out...pre-season maybe?

Do you just read the stat lines? Clearly you're not watching the games. They haven't done it as often the past couple of games, but they definitely have rolled him out to buy time.

Blake still sounds like he did at the beginning of the season.I like what I heard from him in the video. He's a rookie, he'll be ok.
You only have to look as far as the Ravens this year to see how a good OC can turn a pretty average QB into a good QB by running an offense that suits him. Look at Flacco's stats this year compared to last. Major differences.

I'm getting bored watching us lately. The only real entertainment on Sunday was seeing Andrew Luck flung around the pitch for the first half which actually made me realise how good our Defensive line is. They're a lot better than the scores suggest and in pretty much every game this season high scores against us have been because of the Offense being unable to get anything going and the Defense putting in long shifts.
Bottom line, we're putting together a very good Defense. The next step is for our Offense to stay out on the field longer than 2 minutes.
Quote:Where's that analytics showing that Bortles is a top 10 QB when given 2.5+ seconds to throw?
Lol, now thats a throwback....

I actually liked this post. No insults, actually about football. Good job.
Quote:I don't recall the last time they had BB roll out...pre-season maybe?
regularly in the first few games but teams got wise to it and held a man out of the run to stop that and the qb runs
i think one of the last times i remember it was that pick 6 against maybe the steelers where bortles rolled out
pressure was on him
he threw to the tight end and the corner or safety came off the out route and picked it
they slowed it down after that because teams were getting familiar
we either need to make it so they can't take that man out of run d, which means just be better in the run game, difficult to do in a week
or dial it back
they did the later
but they need to dial it up again along
added no more i formation go single back
and i would like to see them bring back the odd bubble screen for an easy completion to try get bortles in rhythm

Except we have used the rollout less lately...which is when you think it would be more effective given that Denard has actually given us a legit running threat.
Spotty? Early in the year, yes. Since the Browns game, Robinson has averaged 5 ypc while scoring 4 TDs. That's far from what I'd call "spotty"

Lol, oh sorry sir! Forgive me for not hanging on every word you type. And you didn't provide an address for where I should send the cookie you are now so loudly begging me to acknowledge and mail out to you!!! :-)
1 so you can only think of one hot read play? That's not good. Though I'll take your word for it, and am impressed with your memory. Again the cookie is on its way. 2. The link you provided didn't work on the device I am using.

Teams are now guarding against the rollout because Bortles had been effective with it.
The running game has been spotty as far as its effectiveness tends to fade sharply after the first quarter to half. The second half production has been very pedestrian.
