Quote:Why do people keep leaving Shorts out of the conversation when we talk about receivers? He's not the WR1 that we've been trying to use him as but he's still good especially after the catch, and fairly reliable.
That's the issue.    ^^

He's not reliable due to injury. He's never played a complete season.   I like him quite a bit - and it would be cool if they keep him around at a reasonable price - but he'll certainly seek more money elsewhere and there are probably 3 or 4 teams out there willing to overpay him.

Cecil Shorts or Allen Hurns which WR is better, I would say based on this year's performance its Allen Hurns whom has 3 receptions less than shorts but a 100 more yards, and 4 more touchdowns than Shorts.  Not to mention a lot of Hurns catches was in traffic getting popped.

Not to mention that Allen Hurns is an undrafted rookie still learning the NFL, while Shorts is a veteran that should be blowing out the competition.

Fair points all around, I meant that he's reliable on the field. I personally think Cecil is glad to be in Jacksonville and likes being part of the rebuild so that might help us get him resigned at a fair price, I know Gus loves his attitude and his unselfishness. But you're right that other teams would probably pay him more than we would.

Those hamstring injuries he keeps getting are really pesky though.

Hurns has still not learned to catch the ball with his hands, not his body. He drops so many passes still because he lets the ball hit him in the pads and bounce off. He's also not the cleanest route runner, he's literally only getting by because he's 6'3" and fast for his size but notice that he's often covered when he manages to come down with the ball. Also note that we have been using him as a slot receiver -- he gets covered by safeties in zone down field, and is rarely ever manned-up by a good corner, meanwhile Cecil Shorts is constantly locked down by the opponent's top corner.
YES.  He's 22.  He hasn't even been playing QB that long.  I really think he starts to "get it" towards the end of this season.  Then, with a full off-season to work with, we see a BIG improvement next year as he develops with AR15, Hurns, and Lee.

But don't you know?  He's supposed to play like Manning in his 30s if he has any potential!  Cut him!  This seems pretty obvious to *some* of the posters around here.  Smile
Remember the pre-draft outlook....raw with a ton of upside and a higher ceiling than the other QBs in the draft.  That's pretty much what we've seen. I assure you no one will work harder than he does to get better.  With a full offseason playing with the ones he is going to be night and day better next year.

Like I said this QB we've drafted makes dumber decisions than Gabbert. It not a physical thing

With Blake the cerebral part is the problem.
I used to think Bortles was going to be good. I'm not really sure about that anymore. He just might not be smart enough to play the position at a pro level.

Some QBs take longer to figure the game out at this level. It was true at the beginning of the year and it's still true now.
I think with a new HC, OC, and QB coach. Because they are the reason why he has REGRESSED. I still think he has a bright future. These coaches...puke

The coaching staff needs a complete overhaul before they ruin Bortles...
He kinda sucks. But hasnt have the benefit of good play calls or help around him. Hard to evaluate. But as of now the future doesnt look good.

Maybe, but do we have the coaches to take him there?

That's a big question all to itself.
I still think he CAN be the guy.

But seriously, WRs with no separation, almost hit by defenders everytime he throws the ball, 1 second to throw before pressure, bad playcalling...that's a lot of things to fix before caaling him a "bust".
I'm not saying he is or isn't...but can you name the last rookie QB that had an almost 2 - 1 INT to TD ratio that ended up being great?

Not without researching it, but I can name plenty of QBs that started out sucking their rookie years and then went on to good or great careers.  Early flashes in the pan like RGIII notwithstanding.
No. He can't throw an accurate pass. He is another Tebow, he has the intangibles but isn't a QB. If you can't throw an accurate pass you can't win a SB. In the game before this one he said he was trying to throw the ball out of bounds when it was intercepted in the end zone. Forget missing the broad side of a barn HE MISSED THE ENTIRE [BLEEP] WORLD outside of the field. Trash.

While I am very disappointed so far, I'm not ready to give up on him yet. He has a crap team around him.

Bortles will be fine as long as our offensive coordinator doesn't make him dink and dunk constantly.
