Bradley is fixing him a double scoop with a cherry on top sundae

These guys are all protected under the Bortles pick. After next year, the coaches will be evaluated. I wasn't in the meeting, but i'm sure Kahn gave them more than 2 years to build a winner.

Todays O-Zone

Frank from Knoxville, TN:
Hey, Zone … while I agree with your premise that changing coaches for the sake of change is generally a bad idea, I gotta disagree on the special teams coach. Just because they threw caution to the wind Sunday with the onside kick and fake punt does not excuse the very poor performance overall this year by that unit. Blocked field goals, blocked punts, below average return game and poor fundamental blocking schemes have been the norm all year, not the exception. Changing up special teams by and large is much easier than installing a brand-new offense or defense and it sends the message to the staff that status quo is not acceptable and everyone is accountable. I think it's a move Gus has to make as it is a glaring weakness on a team where it should be a strength with all the youth and speed on the roster.
John: This is a common refrain, but let’s be clear here: special teams coordinator Mike Mallory will return. I’d be stunned if he doesn’t, and even beyond that … he just will. First, if you’re going to get rid of a coach you need to make sure you replace him with someone better. That will be difficult with Mallory, who is a very good special teams coach who would have a job the next day if he weren’t retained by the Jaguars (which won’t happen, as I said …) Second, the staff and everyone knows the status quo is not acceptable and everyone’s accountable; messages aren’t necessary. Third, the Jaguars have made Mallory’s job exceedingly difficult this season. Ideally, teams like to have seven or eight players who primarily focus on special teams. They’re called “core-four” players because they play on two coverage teams and two return teams. Players such as , ,  and J.T. Thomas have moved off special teams this season to bigger defensive or offensive roles and the team also released core-four players such as Chris Prosinski, Winston Guy and Dekoda Watson. and  remain, but the lack of such players could be seen as a reason for a high number of special teams errors this season. A lot of people will see that as an excuse, and that’s fine. But if you begin the offseason waiting anxiously for a new special teams coach it’s going to be a long, frustrating wait.
Good lord

I really have to hand it to John Oesher (or whatever his last name is...). This guy says Mallory is a very good special teams coach. All any one who has watched the jags games this season can say to that is....huh? What have you been watching John because our special teams is a joke! Multiple blocked field goals, multiple blocked punts (with some returned for touch downs), no big returns by us on kick off's or punts. I see evidence on the field to support the notion that our special teams are not well prepared (see above mentioned 'FUBAR's) but I find little evidence on the field during a game to support the notion that Mallory is a 'good' special teams coach.

I suppose this could simply be a situation where the prerequisites in one persons mind is substantially different from that of the majority of other people. Perhaps Oesher feels that the only requirement to be a 'good' special teams coach is that they have a pulse and show up for the games. Seriously though, he does make a valid point with the question of 'with whom would we replace him who is proven to be better'? My response is we don't have to replace him with someone who is proven to be better... all we need at this point is someone who has no record of being as bad or worse at the job. I think Dave would have to go some to find someone who has a proven track record of being worse...

You would think they'd retire this schtick after Gene Smith.

Hey, he didn't say where he would have a job now did he? I hear fry cooks are in high demand right now...
Mike Mallory has never been the head special teams coach in the NFL prior to getting the job with the Jaguars.

To imply that he's some special teams guru or excellent coach that is irreplaceable is laughable.

There's Mike Mallory's all over the NFL that can be picked up.

John O's toeing of the company line is getting out of hand. What is the use of his column? Is he allowed to have his own opinion? It really is nauseating.

no

Honestly... All the team does at this point is make excuses.

I'm all for patience on offense and defense with these young guys but the fact that special teams has been WORSE than the offense is unreal. How in the world can we bring him back?

It really is annoying. Vic said a lot of stupid things but at least he had an opinion and didn't just act as the team's PR guy all the time. You can tell that Oehser just parrots everything the team tells him to say.
When I read the O-Zone this morning I smiled, as I knew the reaction on here would be amusing. So far, so good.

I was surprised at how adamant Oesher's statements were. I guess Mallory is coming back.

I used to read Ask Vic religiously. I gave up on the O-zone a long time ago.

You guys really want to just fire everyone lol

The defense gave up too many points. Gus' scheme doesn't work. Fire him!

The offense can't move the ball or score points. Fisch sucks! Fire him!

We had a few blocked FGs and a blocked punt. That never happens to any team... Fire Mallory!

By next season you all will probably have added Caldwell, Khan, and the water boy to the pitchfork list.

I realize you've all been burned.

For the past, oh 7 years or so, we've been re-tooling, rebuilding, shifting, demoting, promoting, firing and hiring....

All for not a lot of wins.

But don't be so stupid to think this time isn't different. A complete tear down and rebuild. Currently wrapping up season 2. SEASON 2! (The first starting season of a young, rookie QB. Not to mention many many more young players littered across the starting 22.)

The special teams is FULL of players that are fringe guys. Some of which probably won't be on our roster next year. Because we'll be improving. Hopefully.

Let the staff work.

The full staff. Gus, Bob, Todd, Jedd, Mike.... even the water boy.

I hope the Jaguars are paying O-man well. They asked him to leave his manhood at the door when he took the job.

I don't think you understand how his job works.

He was asked, basically, if Mallory was coming back. Since Oesher has sources with the Jaguars, working for them and all, he said Mallory is coming back, and gave reasons why.

Would you prefer he lie to you? And why do you read him if he "just parrots everything the team tells him to say" and you think you're so much smarter anyway?

I look forward to your columns in the near future.

Too funny.

It's possible... More probable..

He (And Vic before him) just know way more about football (and all the inner workings) than you, or any other random idiot who writes in.

Did you especially enjoy Vic's columns about how Gene Smith was the answer? Or was it the good ol' days of the Steelers that had you hanging on every word?
