Quote:I think we underestimate the fact that our offense has 7 starters that have played 5 games or less of NFL football. We basically have a glorified college team on offense. I'm sure Bortles is not the only one making mistakes. Guys missing blocks, running routes incorrectly, etc., etc. I'm actually surprised we played as well as we did the last 2 weeks.
Remember that were asking them to play football....something they've done their whole lives....were not asking these "rookies" to perform astrophysics here....
The rookie thing has some merit, but lets not go overboard with the excuse. I've seen other very young teams have much success.
Quote:including it yes.
And before you try to discount the preseason, Gabbert and Henne still looked like the typical Gabbert and Henne in their preseasons, too.
So the fact that there is such a stark difference in Bortles' play from before halftime at San Diego (all the way back to preseason) and the the play after it, is relevant.
The problem is you are blaming his poor play on play calling. Neutering is your term. To use pre vs.regular season play calling as a reason for Bortle's poor play is patently ridiculous.

Bortles regular season play up until the half of the Chargers game was very similar to the pre season play of Bortles.
The OC sucks. He wants to run this dink and dunk offense regardless of the QB, IMO.
He gotta go. Actually the whole coaching staff, sans Sullivan and the DL coach need to go. Those 2 are the only ones I would retain with a new regime.

This offense is 3rd in the league in plays over 40 yards. Not quite dink and dunk. 18th in plays over 20 yards. And with no running game for support. Dink and dunk it's not.

Please cite a team that fielded as many rookies early in a season as the Jaguars have this season.
Also yes, we are asking them to play football, but football at the Pro level is not the same as High School or even the College level. The game is not only faster, it's also more complex.

And that was exactly how long?

BOOM!

Mop up duty against the colts and the first half of the chargers game.
TMD, enough already.

The past 6 quarters, dink and dunk (for the most part), it be.

Ok, so you're complaing about 6 quarters that the offense has clearly been slumping and discounting the entire rest of the season and preseason to form your opinion. Makes sense.
Bortles is elite pick 6 thrower..
Quote:I watch Bortles and forget he's a rookie until he makes a typical rookie mistake. As a viewer I trust him with the ball even after he throws a pick because he has that go-getting confidence to overcome his mistakes. If we as fans feel that confidence in Bortles that should say a ton of what his receivers likely think of him. On every snap they have to believe this is the one to break for 6. We never thought that about Henne or Gabbert. The man stands tall in the pocket, is mobile and goes through his reads accordingly. He plays like he's been in the NFL for years instead of a few games. The upside is limitless and no matter what happens this season with our record just be glad the most important position in the NFL has been solved for Jacksonville.
I totally agree with you. I felt it the moment I saw him play. He's so confident, relaxed, and a natural leader. I wouldn't trade him for any other young QB out there, including Luck. Just my opinion & I'm sure folks will say I'm nuts for the "Luck" comment, but that's just me and I am being honest.

Its people like you and stupid comments like that that are going to turn him into a game manager.
I don't care about his INT's as long as they are down the field shots like his first INT last Sunday.
The second INT, ironically was the result of too many similar "safe" short throws that the defense pretty much knew where he was going with the ball even before he threw it, so they jumped the route.

Yes, you are nuts if you'd take Bortles over Luck. Luck is arguably a top 5 QB in this league already. I like Bortles, but your above comment is overboard.

It's my opinion & I don't think it's overboard to say that I wouldn't trade him for any other young QB, Luck included, playing today. I never said BB is better or will end up better. I just like who we have & see strong potential in him. Therefore, I personally would rather have him than anyone else. Who's to say he won't become as good, or better than Luck? Either way, I knew I'd get opposing viewpoints with my opinion before I hit send. You're the first, but I'm sure you won't be the last to think me nuts.
Why do people keep saying Peyton Manning threw 27 int his rookie year? Do you really think Blake Bortles is going to be Peyton Manning? How come nobody says Joey Harrington threw 17 int his rookie year because it doesn't suit their argument. At this point we don't know what Blake will be give it some time people.
Quote:Its people like you and stupid comments like that that are going to turn him into a game manager.
It really isn't. Because he probably doesn't read this board, and if he did (hi, Blake!) then he'd be laughing at people and comments like that.
I haven't been a fan of the playcalling either, but I think in this situation we HAVE to give him more time to make any sort of judgement calls. Two starts is simply not enough. At least give him 10 starts so we can find a trend. Every QB is going to have games where they only use the short game, thats a fact. We have only seen two starts though, definitely not a big enough sample size to make any sort of real analysis.
Quote:The past 6 quarters, dink and dunk (for the most part), it be.
You do realize that the majority of the NFL is dink and dunk or west coast offense which is dink and dunk. Yes QBs throw deep but if you look at the entireity of the game you see more short passes then long. Also you do realize that a short pass to a talented WR that goes 80 yards is not a deep pass correct?? :teehee: We just haven't had any one do that yet the closest was the intermediate pass to hurns on the slant that he took to the house. Learn to football then you might not make such silly statements. Like was posted before only 2 teams go deep more then us.
Quote:You mean the 10 quarters in the FREAKIN' PRESEASON???
That's ample time to evaluate and make a complete determination.
Quote:That's ample time to evaluate and make a complete determination.
Totally appropriate
Edit:
Agree this year won't even be enough time to really determine. Sure it is only football but with practice limits how well can the rookies know phone books of play.
