We're # 25 in points against per game and #32 in takeaways.

#19 rushing yards against per game

Fair points.

I still believe the personnel in place is not only better suited to a 4/3 - I believe they can be a very good 4/3.

I watch and re-watch the games while gauging individual players and their contributions  - and it leaves me thinking this 4/3 defense can be very good with a SS that can cover when needed and one more relevant pass rusher.
It's all about winning not statistics. Turnovers change games. Our vanilla 4-3 soft zone scheme is just not doing it.

That's cause your drunk. And a smarty pants lol

A new HC/DC would likely play less zone after examining the strengths of the roster.
Quote:They need to play straight up Tampa 2.

That scheme relies heavily on zone coverages, whereas I think we have the secondary to play man.

The issue with the 4/3.  Is coverage as far as the new nfl with the te.  Which in all the years we have used it.  Could not stop TE?

That's more the zone coverage and having bad safeties than it is the 4/3 front.

If they upgrade safety and get Myles Jack lined up on TEs more often that problem will diminish.
Quote:Instead of listing the players in this manner, try to look at it from a scheme specific standpoint against an offensive lineup. Typically, most every NFL Defense will use a shade technique with it's Defensive Linemen, especially on running downs. This allows gap control to be a little easier among other things. So instead of using monikers like "NT", "DE", MLB and such, use technique numbers instead.

Now looking at this, who do you want where? Who covers that slot via the Cn role? Colvin? House? Draft Pick?

Which 5 do you want to have to stand up the potential double team from H and T?

Which 50 handles H when it's Gronkowski? Is that Jack? Telvin? Fowler? Also, which 50 rushes the passer or drops into coverage? Is that Yannick?

Which 20 stands up when that backside Guard pulls around and wraps up to block him? Is that Poz? Jack? Free Agent?

Lots of stuff involved in a defensive scheme other than just naming positions.
Just spitballing but I'd go:

5 = Jon Allen

1= Roy Miller/Abry

3= Malik

Then with the linebackers you can get creative.

So you could go: 50 covering the TE - Myles Jack

20- Fowler rushing the A-gap/hitting that backside guard

20- Telvin - basically still playing his weakside hit and run role or covering the flats/dropping into zone. Same thing as Arizona does with Bucannon. Calls him a MLB or moneybacker but in reality he's just a weakside 4-3 role playing in a 3-4

Weakside 50- Yannick. This would mainly be on passing downs , Yannick would come down to the LOS rushing creating a defacto 4-3 , let Fowler pick his spots to hit and depending on what he sees , let Jack cover the TE and let Telvin hit and run.

Need another two 3-4 type OLBs too probably. So on run downs I'd take out Yannick and have it

50- New OlB

20-Poz

20-Telvin

50-Fowler

And have Myles Jack playing the slot corner role.
I'm all for a 34.
I really love the Idea of bringing in either Dontari Poe or Calais Cambell and Drafting Jon Allen either way.

I'd sign Campbell to play the 3 Tech in most situations opposite Jackson as the 5 and use Allen much like Aaron Donald playing off the interior

Allen is so disruptive and he can play any line spot and be disruptive. He'd be really good as a 3 Tech I think, since he is one of the most violent interior line prospects to come out in a  while.

I could also sign Poe as a nose and Swing Allen to the 5 and probably be more successful in that scheme

The Linebackers are interesting because I'd be willing to attempt to turn Yannick into a more versatile player who drops into coverage more and occasionally throws his hand in the dirt. I'm afraid he might be so one-dimensional. Same with Fowler, can he be used like Brandon Graham?  Do you find another outside linebacker?

Well how many times were we down in blowout losses this year?

As Gene Frenette observed, we were in most games this year.

Quote:

Week 17 was reminiscent of weeks 1, 3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, all losses in which the Jaguars either blew a fourth quarter lead or came up short when they were within one score of the lead.

“That happened a lot this year, didn’t it?” said receiver Bryan Walters. “We had a lot of opportunities. Same old story.”

Also understand, the points allowed ranking typically does not exclude offensive points surrendered due to pick 6s, etc, or special teams points allowed.

In fairness to your point, run defense and turnovers created remain problematic.

Nevertheless, while I agree the defense was not a dominant defense like the top 5-6 ranking might suggest to some, I submit the rankings are reflective of overall defensive improvement, not only due to better talent (Jackson, Ngakoue, Fowler, Jack, Ramsey) but with the changing of coordinators (Babich to Wash).  That overall defensive improvement should be built upon, not throwing the baby out with the bathwater in the name of scrapping the scheme.

Bottom line:  We don't have the stud NT to run the 3-4.  We definitely don't have the linebackers, either in type or sheer numbers.

The thing that worries me about this formation and that lineup, is that a run to the weakside is pretty open if you pull the H to kick out Ngakoue (WS 50). That way, you can double Jackson (3) wit the G and T, and also pull the backside G to lead up through the play.

You need a savvy LB on the field to notice that and react quick enough. I like your personnel distributions but I think that your post demonstrates that you still need to add talent to the roster in order to be successful.

Yeah it wouldn't be ideal. I'd rather stay 4-3 but I like the creative blitz packages in the 3-4.

If we did make the switch we would need a Poe type NT, a pure pass rushing 3-4 OLB and then maybe one or two more OLB/DE guys who can play either spot. Would take two offseason to get right whereas with the 4-3 we really just need a DE,LB and maybe a S.

Also, don't forget the #1 rule of plays / schemes: "If you don't know it, don't coach it."

In order to pull it off, you need a guy who knows how the Defense is supposed to work and how to coach up the players to implement it.
Quote:This would never work. We don't have 34 players on defense. /JaguarsWoman
Funny you should mention that. I haven't seen Hitler around for a while.

Did the little troll get banned?

I'd say suspended based on other comments elsewhere.
I'm kind of tired of these bend don't break defenses. Let's get an aggressive attacking defense that throws the other team's offense all out of whack.

I hate when people try to involve me.  When a troll... And in the wrong.

I am guilty for lack of typing skills.  Sides simple call center ones.

But never been nor would be a troll.  Been Jax since Day One.
