Quote:One of the more interesting developments revolved around offensive lineman Tyler Shatley, who initially the team planned to release and add to their practice squad, but it sounds like the coaching staff fought to keep him on the roster. It also appears that when word got out Shatley could be cut, there were a handful of teams interested in claiming him.
"There were some initial inquiries about (trading), and nothing firm. I got some other calls, just to find out some character stuff on him and to see if he’s healthy and stuff like that," Caldwell said about Shatley. "Those were obviously some red flags. Gus and I spent a lot of time last night just about it talking philosophically and talked to (Offensive Line Coach) Luke Butkus and Luke was dire that he did not want to lose him."

To be completely honest I didn't even realize he was on the squad until recently. Its obvious there are some teams out there that think he could develop into a fine player.
.....so there was indecision on Shatley? (cliff notes version)...

Apparently other teams were interested in trading for him or signing him off waivers. The Jags planned to place him on the PS but with him drawing interest from other teams they decided to hang onto him.

I got that. Seems to me we should be stronger in our own convictions/ opinions on players that we've had a whole camp/ preseason to evaluate and not be swayed by what other teams may feel about them at this point. Who's running our team us or them?

If this doesn't prove the franchise is in disarray, what will???

Oh, come on. This happens all the time. Guys on the practice squad get promoted to the 53 man roster when other teams start sniffing around about them.

I think your making something outta nothing again.

Well they liked him enough that they at least wanted to keep him on the practice squad.
I don't think it's about what other teams want, I think it's about how this team thinks it can keep the best group of players possible.
Much the way you don't draft a punter in the 3rd round because you know good punters will be available in free agency you don't keep a player on the active roster if they're developmental and you're confident you can keep them on the practice squad. It seems for Shatley they realized they would have to do more than that to keep him around.

I just think that if they liked him, there shouldn't be any indecision based on other teams' interest. Either they feel he can play/ develop into something good or they don't.
They allegedly were ready to cut him until other teams called and then, indecision...

...and place him on the PS, which you've conveniently left out.

Yes, cut him and put him on the practice squad.
However, given that teams can snatch anybody up off the practice squad... they didn't put him there so as not to lose him.

It's not so much about indecision, it's about available spots and available personnel. They thought highly enough of him to protect his status rather than let another team claim him or risk putting him on the practice squad.
Quote:wheres the mountain? :ermm:
there is no mountian but your making something out of nothing. Not all coaches are gonna be in complete agreement and other teams interest absoultely effects a players roster spot.

Time to go jump off a bridge
Kind of unrelated but I'd cut Jordan Todman for Lache Seastrunk in a heartbeat.

That is basically every thread now it seems like.
Nothing better than over analyzing decisions made on a guy they actually liked, but wanted him to get some coaching and learn the system.
