Quote:Moore tweaked his hamstring at the combine which explained the poor 40 time. He upped his bench to 19 at his pro day (didn't re-run the 40, but posted good shuttle times).

Compare Moore's numbers to Sam's

Bench Press.... Moore 19, Sam 17

40 time... Moore 4.95, Sam 4.91

Vert Jump... Moore 35.5, Sam 25.5

Broad Jump... Moore 122.0, Sam 114.0

3 cone drill... Moore 7.05, Sam 7.80

20 yard shuttle... Moore 4.31, Sam 4.70

Moore is superior to Sam in every workout category besides the one he was injured during. Further, Moore put up extremely good numbers (top 5 at the position) in both the the vertical jump and broad jump. A 10 inch difference in vertical in absolutely huge. Combine those 10" with the 2" difference in height and 2" difference in wingspan and you are talking 14 inches of "reach".

Even further, looking at the 2014 results......

Sam finished

22nd of 28 in the 40 yard dash.

20th of 20 in the 3 cone drill (last)

22nd of 22 in the vertical jump (last)

14th of 22 in the broad jump.

21st of 22nd in the bench press.

Combine that rotten showing of strength/speed/athleticism with his lack of size and it's pretty amazing the guy was even drafted.

Why use Sam's combine bench reps compared with Moore's pro day bench reps?

At the very least Sam needs to be on a practice squad. His production in college and in the preseason merit that.

Is anyone else disgusted by the fact that all the talking heads are happy that he's likely going to Dallas, even going as far as admitting that its probably more about PR and jersey sales than actual play? I can't blame him for just being happy to make a team, but its obvious that he's being exploited and the media is eating it up.

That's been the case since he sat in front of a camera on ESPN to announce he was gay.  The media has been using him ever since.

That's my only hang up. Talent wise, he should be at least practice squad. The media makes it so unbearable to watch and think about though and focus on one thing.

He probably should at least be on a PS, agreed.

But, haha thats what the media gets. They wanted to push their agenda and in the end all they did was hurt one of their own. He'd probably be on a practice squad already - and had multiple suitors - but teams don't want to deal with the circus/ distraction.

So, was there a circus around Sam during the preseason? I really don't recall seeing a lot of cameras trying to get into the Rams facility during the preseason. I just recall the talking heads on the sports networks talking about what a great job he was doing playing.

Are you guys imagining the headache he brings with him, or do you have some conclusive proof of it?

To be fair, most of us probably didn't keep up with local reports out of the Rams camp like we do the Jaguars, but I agree with you, the noise I heard came mostly from Sportscenter and the like. Sam was interviewed a reasonable number of times, as his was and is an interesting story. I didn't think anything was out of control, largely due to the correct decision to abandon any thoughts of a reality show.

Local coverage will always be there, it's the national coverage that could create a circus.

I don't recall any amount of coverage from the national media in excess of other notable players, certainly nothing like what Johnny Manziel garnered. I guess the Browns should just cut Manziel now, since his play obviously doesn't warrant the amount of media scrutiny he's bringing.

ESPN made him their headline story, far too often.  He was a 7th round pick and got more air time than just about anyone outside of Johnny Football.  They did a story on whether he takes a shower at the Rams facility or not for crying out loud.  ESPN was by far the worst I saw of the "circus" and they took it entirely too far.

Agree, but his talent is marginal at best.  Not at least.

ESPN had a segment on his shower habits, which they later apologized for.

Yeah for a late round pick fringe roster player, the media attention should be basically non-existant in a perfect world as far as the coach/GM is concerned. So even though he's done nothing wrong, it does work against him.
I've seen websites labeling articles today as "Cowboys hold press conference to announce Michael Sam signing" or something similar. Which is for nothing more than clicks.  Jason Garrett normally holds a press conference at this time, Michael Sam was just added to it from what I can find.

So a sports network talking about a player on a sports show, much less than they talked about other *cough*Manziel*cough* players, is a circus?

You're joking, right?

ESPN is becoming less and less of a sports show all the time.  It's borderline unwatchable.

They ran a segment on how Michael Sam showers...that's sports to you?

They tried. Rams said absolutley not. Oprah was going to do a reality show. How many undrafted guys does that happen for?

I agree. But like I said, he's at the very least a practice squad guy. There was a stat I heard this morning. 13 guys had 3 or more sacks in the preseason. 11 are on active roster, 1 was on practice squad (prior to Sam being signed).

Yup, and they've been apologizing for that story ever since.

They also ran segments on how Johnny Manziel spends his time off the field. That offend you?

Really what this all comes back to is a lot of bigots still angry that their bigoted view is becoming less and less accepted by society at large, and the backlash from those who want to feel justified in their bigotry are exhibiting.

Michael Sam is a special player, he's going to get special coverage because of it, that's what sports media is for, covering the exceptional, not the mundane. Never before has there been a gay player (and there have been hundreds of them, no doubt) brave enough to actually live the life they should be allowed to live.

The real shame in all of this isn't Michael Sam's success so far in the league, or the coverage he's gotten, the real shame is the bigotry that's been exposed so far in the NFL's fanship.

I give up.

I should have known better, to each his own.
