Quote:Earl Thomas left as a soph too, even tho he did start his freshman year, but he had a simlar year as Hooker as a redshirt soph, making explosive plays and range, I would gladly have taken him at 4. Heck we could have had him at 10, but we took Alualu, if a player is projected to be a great player, who cares where you pick them at.
I agree that if they're projected to be a great player you take him where you can. But now that hooker is going to miss the combine and his pro day bc of his shoulder and hernia surgeries there is going to be a lot of unknowns with him. So scouts are only going to have tape from one season to try and project where he ranks in this class. I still think he's a first rounder but 4 is a little rich. Also Earl's game was more well rounded than hooker's seems to be.
Yeah, I think Adams would be the guy over Hooker right now.
Quote:I'd take Hooker as a FS and move Gipson to SS. Gipson would be an upgrade over Cyprien and Hooker should be an elite FS.
This just might be worth considering. I really like Adams as being the missing piece to replace Cyp, and talks of him being the best tackler in this draft makes me think of Double D. On the flip side, however, this team is so desperate for turnovers, and Hooker appears to be an INT machine. Simply put, draft either S at #4 and I'm a happy camper.
Quote:I've ready plenty of comparisons to Ed reed
Nobody would call Ed Reed soft though. Even though he was a FS with a penchant for INTs, if Ed Reed hits you, you stop in your tracks. He was so good in coverage that it gets overlooked how physical he was as well.

Ed played SS too

I mentioned that bc I thought the comparisons to reed we off base bc of reeds physicality. They're different players in my eyes.I'd take Adams all day over hooker.
As we get closer and I learn more about these two, I'm keep leaning stronger and stronger toward Jamal Adams being the guy. I just see him transforming the Jaguars defense into an elite group as their missing player.
Adams looks like the player that Cyp should've been. Dude is physical and is a fantastic run defender, both would be great, but I don't see us moving on from Gip.

Cyp was pretty good last year. We largely misused him the first few years. I'm not sure that we have a need at SS, just resign Cyp.
Hooker has wonderful ball skills. I would pick him if we were going to Cover 2. I dont think either will be the pick though because I am not sold that Allen doesn't fall to 4.

Cyprien did improve a lot last year, but is still not good enough for me to say re-signing him should rule out drafting a SS. He probably reached his ceiling.
FWIW Malik Hooker is #1 in Mike Mayock's safety rankings.
Quote:FWIW Malik Hooker is #1 in Mike Mayock's safety rankings.
He went through 2 surgeries and won't be able to participate in the combine. At this point I think he drops out of top 10 but someone will take a risk on him mid round prob. I would rather have Adams as it would be a team need if Cyprien walks and I think he is the best safety in this draft. I think he is better than Eric Berry coming out of college (eye test).
Adams. Adams. Adams.
My favorite player in this draft. Admittedly I'm googly-eyed biased at this point, but I was a huge John Allen wisher until I started watching this guy...and it's hard to swerve me away from the trenches.
Adams' is your "You know what your getting" type of guy with John Lynch/Eric Berry qualities.
Hooker is more of a question mark, boom/bust. With Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix/Reggie Nelson qualities.
I'd take Adams all day over Hooker.

He won't be able to participate in pro day either. However, the injuries will not keep him out of preseason games barring a setback from either surgery. Time will tell how big a risk it would be for a team like the Colts to pick him.

agreed, Nelson is who Hooker reminds me of as well
it would be amazing if Hooker pulled a Myles Jack and fell to us in the 2nd due to injury

I am not keeping my hopes up.

Before NFL.com released their player rankings, I didn't find nearly as many people saying hooker reminds them of Nelson.
lol

I didn't even know nfl.com had that, I thought it was Ed Reed. Reggie Nelson was the eraser in college, I never thought of that until that guy posted it. A very good comparison imo. I see Nelson much more than I do Reed. Who do you think is a good comparison for him?
