Doss has to have a huge game thursday to make this team.
Quote:Anyone got Allen Hurns 40 time? just curious

The old saying for receivers goes, it's not how fast you get to your breaks, it's how fast you get in and out your breaks. Allen Hurns is a guy that creates separation with good route running, and being crisp in and out of his breaks, it's by far the most underrated attribute a receiver does/doesn't possess. Darrius Heyward-Bey has world class speed, but has stones for hands and struggles to crisply get in and out of his breaks, on the flip side, Keenan Allen (San Diego Chargers) ran a 4.71 40, he's an average athlete, but is able to create incredible separation with route running and break crispness. That's why the Jags are so blessed to have a receivers coach like Jerry Sullivan, he teaches the nuances of the position to these receivers, not to say that's not happening with other teams because it surely is, but Sullivan is finding a way to get production out of average talents.

I don't know.  I think he's got an extended opportunity to audition for the team with Sanders suspended.
Quote:I love Shorts, his injury issue is frustraiting tho.
This^. If he can't get healthy this year and doesn't play the majority of the season, I don't see a re-sign.

GO JAGS!

The thing about Hurns is that he has a nose for finding an opening.  He runs routes like a seasoned vet, picking spots to sit down and make plays.  He's got a little Keenan McCardell in him in that regard.

You bet; that's why he was so productive at Miami all while possessing relatively average athletic ability, the same goes for Keenan Allen while he was at Cal. Some guys just have a niche for getting open, setting up defensive backs and quickly getting in/out of breaks, that's what made Jerry Rice so great, defensive backs had no idea what route he was running because they all looked the same, that's the true beauty of that position Imo. We all love speed and guys that can jump high, but at the end of the day; Can the guy play? The answer seems to be yes with Allen.

Quote:You forgot Tandon Doss.  We got him in veteran free agency, so they must have a role for him.
PR until Sanders comes back. Perhaps beyond that point if he's healthy and performs well.

I'm hoping that when the games count, we'll continue to see him stepping up and making plays.  I think that will be the case based on what I've seen so far, and if that indeed happens, this team is going to have a really good  group of young receivers to work with.  That's never a bad thing.

Not at all, it's been awhile since this team has had a group of talented productive receivers.

Coughlin was always in search of the elusive 3rd receiver, and never actually found one.  This group has the potential to go 5 deep, and when / if Blackmon gets back on the field, if he can resume where he left off, holy smokes. Bortles would have to work very hard to look bad in that situation.

Yep WIllie Jackson was probably the best of the 3rd WR bunch for this team - at least back then.
At this point I consider Marqise Lee nothing more than a high draft pick. High draft picks all have potential, all have elite college skills, but only a few have NFL starter skills. I need to see it on Sundays.

I think Bortles is one of those QBs that can get the most out of the WR position.  If that is the case, Cecil will become expendable after this season.

As far as Lee goes, I'm just hoping that he's one of those players where the light suddenly goes on when the real games start.

Fred Taylor was sort of like this. He was a high draft choice and I don't remember him being all that impressive in preseason of 1998. ....but when the real games started, he shined.

Or, he'll become a star and a critical component for this team.

Agreed.  Hopefully it clicks for him because he has the potential to be a fun one to watch on Sundays.
Quote:Wasn't long ago that we were talking about how we have no playmakers on the outside, after Blackmon's indefinite ban from the league.

2 second round picks, and an undrafted rookie later, we could have a great core of receivers.

If we can lock up Shorts long-term:

Shorts

Robinson

Lee

Hurns

Sanders

Brown/Taylor/Doss

This group looks to be formidable for a long time to come.

Imagine if Blackmon some how, some way, finds his way back...
I agree (if they can remain healthy and out of trouble) the WR position is one of our teams least concerns....

Who is going to play Center (and do it well) is a big issuse right now...

When will he start in the game 3rd qtr or sooner?

The poll has Lee as the least likely, we should all vote for him...
I don't see this group as having serious potential, but definitely could be dangerous.

Cecil Shorts has probably reached his peak as a football player, which is an above average starter.

Marqise Lee has speed but is a bit small to ever become a dominant receiver.

Allen Robinson will more than likely become the Jaguars leading receiving threat, solely based on his combination of size and speed.

Hurns has average physical attributes but has played really well thus far, can't really make a judgement on him yet.

Ace is nothing more than a gadget player. His small size will never allow him to be more than that in the NFL.

All in all, this so much better than what we've had over the past 8 years.
Do you remember when....

2007 WR Core

#18 Matt Jones

#86 Dennis Northcutt

#17 Charles Sharon

#19 Ernest Wilford

#11 Reggie Williams

2008 WR core

#16 Nate Hughes

#86 Dennis Northcutt

#81 Mike Walker

#84 Troy Williamson

the team has had some poor talent at WR for a long time...  having average to above average at WR right now with promise from the rookies to maybe be better has us all feeling as if the WR core is stellar.
