Germany, France, and Canada aren't third world countries. Neither are Australia, New Zealand, or the Scandanavian countries. They are nice places to live with populations that aren't forced to work nearly as hard as our own to earn the same modest standard of living.
I think I know what precisely what Caldrac's talking about.

Quote:The "system" of life in general in America is overrated.
From the cradle to the grave, I feel like I have been brainwashed. The older I get, the more and more detached I feel from everyone else. Sleep, eat, work, sleep, eat, work, sleep, eat, work. I am twenty-six years old, and when I look around at the grand majority of the people that I have to work with on a daily basis, from young to old, I often ask myself "How and why did this all happen?" and "How can people continue to do this everyday?". It's so, so depressing man. I hate the fact that I have to have money in order to have a decent and sustainable environment to live in. I work 60 or more hours a week (off at 1 AM, approaching the 16 hour mark today), for what? To pay for water/cable/internet/electric and mortgage that I don't really get to enjoy as much as I probably should.
Am I the only one that feels this way? I can't be the only one. Don't you people get sick and tired of getting up everyday like a mindless drone, with an automatic routine that just gets more dull and dull by the day? My God, it's so tiresome and sickening to think about. The amount of things that we do in this world just to have "some" happiness. Don't get me wrong, I am not lazy, I like to work, but, why? It's just so aggravating sometimes man. I feel like whatever created us had better plans than for us to just look like a bunch of worker ants from afar. That's all we really are, well, the majority of us on this planet. I wish it would just stop, you know? No more systematical nonsense. No more economy, no more deadend jobs, more freedom, more happiness. More human progressiveness.
I don't know. I'll leave it at that. But, yeah, the system and way of life here is just so overrated....
Thank God for Football, and thank God for forums like this. I can't believe I have been posting on here since I was maybe fifteen or sixteen years old.... whoa....
Caldrac is NOT over rated.

Every country listed is sucking on the teat of America's defense largess. If only we could also spend pennies on the dollar for the protection of shared economic sea lanes and interests around the world. But how you begin to draw a parallel between the narrow relative effort to live in different first world countries as opposed to slaving just to exist in a third world country is beyond me.

The list is for overrated things, not things that plain suck. When was the last time you heard anyone say anything good about Gwyneth Paltrow?
My list:
- Vacations. You go somewhere, see the sights, sleep in a bed that's not as nice as back home, rinse repeat until you find yourself in a basket weaving museum wanting to go home.
- Democracy. I'll try and keep it within the CoC, but it just doesn't work. The people at the top are only interested in power for powers sake and the people at the bottom are too disengaged and too ignorant to make the right choices.
- Christmas. Lets all spend money we don't have on junk we don't need for people we don't like.
- Nirvana. If Kurt Cobain was still alive, nobody would give a flying monkey's left stone.

Agree there. But I don't decorate much or buy gifts for anyone other than my kids. I am not a good consumer.

Christmas is a brilliant holiday, even for non-Christians. People ruin it with the excessive gift giving nonsense. They stress themselves out running all over the place to buy stuff.
I thought Nirvana was OK, but I never understood how Kurt Cobain was seen as this musical genius. Not saying I'm a musical expert, but didn't their songs have like 4 chords and Cobain could barely play a guitar?

Going to the beach is overrated. If I wanted to sit around do nothing in the sun, I can accomplish this at home without spending the money to do so.
Going out to the bars is overrated. It seems like this has become the center of our culture..go out to a bar and have some drinks. Usually nothing worthwhile happens.

I didn't buy my son presents for his first 5-7 years. I'm not much of an Xmas person either.
