Quote:That's fair to Bortles, though it could be argued that had Jacksonville traded down, Cleveland might have taken Bortles.

This is about where I am.

Willing to give it a chance.

My immediate hope is two fold:

1)  The Jaguars get him some help these next two days.

2)  The Jaguars keep Bortles on the bench at least until the OL has had a chance to get its bearings.  Ideally, we won't see Bortles until after the bye week...unless we just hit on EVERY pick we make this year.

To be truthful, with all the Mack and Watkins talk the past week, I kinda had myself expecting a pick of either, or a trade down with Detroit with them taking Watkins.

A trade down was my biggest hope. SInce I figured we'd still get a good player at 10 ish and then get more picks.

I like Bortles size, but I gotta be honest....he just doesn't wow me on the footage. He looks just ordinary.

I'll give it a chance though. I will.
Quote:It's nice to see you not being negative TMD. Bortles does kinda seem like a mobile Matt Ryan. I thought you really disliked Bortles earlier in the year?

Yeah, I'm not his biggest fan...but I've only seen a little bit of his play so I'm hoping theres better play that I haven't seen.
Quote:We took the guy Cleveland wanted so they traded down. Buffalo gave up too much imo.

We might have taken the guy Cleveland wanted, which lowered the price to where Buffalo was willing to trade.

I think with Bortles being Caldwell's guy, Caldwell would have had to have a too-good-to-pass-up deal for a trade.
I know I'm very happy Minnesota made that last minute trade to snag Bridge from Houston.

The way I see it now, Houston will take either Savage, Mettenberger or Carr, or trade for Mallett.
Im totally happy Teddy didnt go to the Texans, I really wonder who they go with.

Quote:I really really DON't want to trash it.

Honestly.

And I won't.

Am I disappointed?

Yes.

I thought we could have traded down and maybe still gotten Bortles. I would have liked that deal that Cleveland got from Buffalo with the 1st rounder in 2015.

But I am willing to give it a chance.

Dave Caldwell, has just put himself out there though. Like Gene Smith with Gabbert....Dave's Jags legacy will be judged on this pick.
A GM's legacy is always judged on picks.

We got the Hometown guy, that is very decent. Pro-Style offense, He just needs a little more time.

I know a little while backed I bashed him, but after doing some more comparisons, he is a very good QB compared to  Henne and Gabbert.

I also know that I compared him to Chad Henne in college, and that his stats were almost similar to Bortles. I forgot about one thing though: TALENT!

Henne had higher level recruits around him, like: Mario Manningham, Jake Long, Mike Hart, Steve Breaston. Just to name a few.

As for Bortles, besides Storm Johnson, who else can you name? Don't worry I'll wait.

Just have to look at the whole picture, be patient and see what happens. Bortles has the chance to be the best QB Jacksonville EVER had. And that is a huge Brunell fan saying that. *Cheers*

Carr 2.0
I'll say this though,

I DO want another QB selected in this draft.

Hopefully Murray in the 4th.

I'd like to see him work on his ball placement and he does make some risky throws but I think those things can be fixed. I also really believe Cleveland was set to take him at #4 and I find it interesting that no other QB was taken until mid 20's. Caldwell did a great job of not tippig his hat.
I like that Bortles can stand and take a hit and I really don't think his arm will be an issue. Does anyone else feel like Sanders is gonna be a favorite target of Bortles on those quick out passes?
Regardless of how this turns out I figured that this was our guy a couple months ago.  Then people started to project him going first overall and I wondered if we would get him.

Frankly, he just makes too much sense.  He is considered the QB with the highest upside in the draft.  He is from Orlando, which just happens to be a Jaguars secondary market that is nearly untapped.  He has the potential to gain you the same fan increase that Tebow would without the downside of obsessive Tebow fans who would want him to play right away.  He has the prototypical NFL body and style of play.

Basically, he should have been the first QB off the board in this draft.  Whether he should have been the third pick overall is debatable but if we wanted him and had no trade partner to move down a couple spots then we had to take him at 3.

Does Bortles have the arm for the 15 yard out?

I think that's huge.  Houston isn't going to get Teddy, nor will they have the ability to trade down for some team looking to trade UP for him.

Yes.  Good arm strength.  Not elite Aaron Rodgers arm, but a good arm.

I've actually heard it compared to Andrew Luck's.

good arm not great but you don't need a great arm in this league. I do worry about his decision making but a lot of top QBs take risks.. Also I can't tell if his deep ball is bad or just that he throws to really short receivers that don't go up for the ball.

I read his deep ball accuracy was actually the best in this QB class

perhaps so.. I was just watching his South Carolina a d Baylor cut up.. Seem like he missed on alot of deep balls. Still tons to like about the kid.. Saw him get hit two or three times in the pocket.. Bounced off and throw a dart for a completion. You can't arm tackle the guy and he's quick for his size.
Quote:I think a big turn-off for the staff on Teddy was him not taking part in everything in the combine.

That would be very nice.

I like the idea of Murray because he's a 4 year college guy. (and good, IMO) Could actually be ready before Bortles.
