Having a veteran like Mack have had been nice because he would take the line protection calls. Especially if there is a rookie under center.
Quote:With Alex Mack gone, where does this leave us?  Do you expect Caldwell to sign some other free agent or will it strictly be the draft now?

I think it's obvious we don't think Brewster or anyone on the roster is the Center for us....  This leaves us with 2 glaring holes on our offensive line.  If we go into the draft with 2 huge holes, I think you will see us reaching for some "starters" in round 2-4 to fill those positions up, possibly leaving playmaking WRs on the board in the process.

It really sucks Cleveland matched.
As a Browns fan I have to say I told you so. Stop and think, if the Jags had a PB center do you think you'd let him walk for that amount of money? All you did was do the contract for us. Thanks. lol

You're welcome, someone needed to help out that inept front office the skidmarks have.

I was thinking the very same thing.

Well as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained.  The only real loser in the whole deal is Mack who is stuck playing for the Browns for two more years.
Going after Mack displayed Caldwell's faith in Brewster's possible job performance.  As the free agent center market is worthless at this moment, Caldwell's only choice is to address the position in the draft, or live the year with subpar performance from someone currently on the roster.

There's really only one viable way to go now that the Mack deal is done. We move on to the draft. If another free agent shakes free between now and camp, I'm sure we'll be making a run if they're a good fit.
Not landing Mack isn't the end of the world.
Goodwin? Too old? Solid guy tho.

Velasco? Younger? Coming off Achilles injury.

Any others left, or are they no better than Brewster?

Rookie QB, rookie center? Both the gears that run the offense. Not too crazy about that.
Sign Goodwin?

They have to have something to cheer about, since apparently the ghost of Al Davis is running their franchise.
I'm actually glad we didn't get him. I'm not sure why everyone is so excited about paying a Center like a Left tackle. Long term this is better for us, no center is worth that much, Meester was making pennies compared to this guy. If the Browns were smart they would let him walk instead of overpaying him in the first place.

Honestly I feel like this was more PR than anything. Raise the status of the team a bit get the fans excited.

GJ we negotiated a deal for you that includes you guys overpaying a center. The fact that you guys were willing to pay even more  should be a bit concerning.

Actually...
We already have Rackley, Brewster, Nowak, Patrick, Stankiewitch, Milhim, McClendon, Bradfield and Love on the roster. We will almost certainly spend a few draft picks on the OL and we will sign a bunch of UDFAs.

Between the 12ish offensive linemen we will have in camp who are not definite starters, we will find one starting C and starting one OG. The fact that none of them are likely to be as good as Mack is incidental.

We will be fine...this will be technically the first year of having Joeckel plus we signed Beadles. I'm sure I'm not the only one hoping Luke comes out and proves he is better than Jake. O line won't be as bad as last year just because we missed out on Mack, most knew Cleveland would match.

This^

We aren't likely to have an all pro center- but someone will emerge and hopefully not prove to be a major liability.

If we're lucky a mid round pick will beat the odds and be ready to start.

Good luck on spending all that coin for 5-11.

So the Browns front office is so incompetent that it needs another franchise to negotiate their own player contracts?

Got it.
