Quote:I don't think anyone can fairly answer that question. Alex Smith has played with a talented 49 and KC team. Henne has never been given the chance to play for a talented team. Henne is tough and will stand in the pocket and take a hit to make a play. I want to see what he has in him with a talented team and coming into the season as the starter. The big issue with Henne is he throws too many ints. Henne is simply a hot/cold QB. At times he looks good while other times you can't stand him. I do know certain HOF QB's like Farve made a career out of being a hot/cold QB. I am going to give the guy a shot and see what happens.
I am sure you are not comparing Henne to Favre but just mentioning them in the same sentence is crazy.
The issue I see with Henne is he tops out at average...and IMO the only way we win with him is if we have a very good top 3 - 5 D and a top 5 running game and still get some bounces our way.
I would say Henne is way closer to luke warm/cold QB than a hot/cold QB
Chad Henne = playoffs?
You bet your sweet bippy he does.
I'm probably wrong though. I usually am.

You do know that Favre leads the NFL in all time ints as well as tds right? That is the very definition of inconsistency.

How do you know where he tops out at?

Favre had INTs because he believed his talent and elite arm could fit the ball through any window...Henne throws INTs because he is not that talented...BIG difference.

Henne has been in the league for 6 years...this wil be his 7th and he has never been anything more than average at best...I don't see him being a Rich Gannon type QB that gets better with age...
Maybe I am wrong...but nothing he has done yet in the league shows he will be anymore than average...hey maybe if we build an elite team around him we can make the play offs...
I hope I am wrong...I hope he comes out and throws for 3,500 - 4,000 yards with 30+ Tds and less than 15 INTs...but i don't see it.

Why on earth would you think you could possibly see Henne pulling a Rich Gannon?
Of course you wouldn't see that coming. No one saw it in Rich Gannon after his 6th season either.
The fact that you don't see it now would be a requirement for him actually doing something like Gannon.
It's kind of funny how you throw that out there like it is something predictable to begin with. Sure the odds don't favor it but you are acting like you are basing it on evaluations. Doing it in spite of bad evaluations is what made Rich Gannon a phenom.
Henne has his moments but not enough of them. Batted down balls and interceptions has been two reasons for his lack of production. If the building goes as planned Henne will not be the quarterback next year and may be replaced during this season if we draft a quarterback that makes good progress during the season. Is it possible that Henne improves his play with better talent and good coaching, Yes! He may become a good enough game manager by having more touchdowns then interceptions, But I doubt he will ever be able to carrier the team on his shoulders into the playoffs. This is his swan song and will be his last chance to quarterback the team if he ever was to elevate his play this is his final chance and I'm sure he knows it! I hope he does improve because we need him to show he can be that backup that can come for a limited time and manage games until the starter returns. Good luck Henne I hope you have a break out year while we mentor our starting quarterback.
Quote:So you are blaming Henne for playing for a very bad Dolphins team and a terrible Jaguars one? I don't think he has been given a fair shot.
Maybe you want to give Gabbert another shot? He never got a "fair deal" while he was here either. It's pretty easy people. If you have a good QB, he makes everybody else on the offense better. He makes the Oline better by being able to shift and move in a pocket that may not be strong in one area. He makes up for receivers problems by knowing where to put the ball for different guys and by being able to shift a secondary. He makes up for a not-so-great running game by forcing the defense to respect the potential of a big pass.
I don't know why it's so hard to see this. The QB is everything in the NFL now. If you don't have one, you're not going anywhere. Henne is a backup you put in when your starter goes down with an injury. Henne isn't a guy to take a team to the playoffs. He never has been, and he never will be.
The last time there was a QB on either team in the superbowl who wasn't near the top of the QB's was 2007 when Chicago had Rex Grossman.
2007: Peyton Manning vs Rex Grossman
2008: Eli Manning vs Tom Brady
2009: Ben Rothlisberger vs Kurt Warner
2010: Drew Brees vs Peyton Manning
2011: Aaron Rodgers vs Ben Rothlisberger
2012: Eli Manning vs Tom Brady
2013: Joe Flacco vs Kaepernick
2014: Russel Wilson vs Peyton Manning
You have to have a QB. Period. If you're happy with Henne, then you obviously don't understand this concept.
Henne does not equal playoffs. He is career backup material, at best. He will be one of the worst 5 starting QBs in the league next season. The only ultra-slim chance a team can make the playoffs with Henne at he helm would be to have a top defense, so the Henne-led offense has few points needed to generate a win.
First its Henne equals playoffs, now we are comparing Brett Farve to Chad Henne??.... I repeat Chad Henne??.... Its time for some of yall to lay off the Dave & Gus juice.
Henne individually doesn't equate to the playoffs. Even a Hall of Fame QB by himself doesn't. If the defense sucks or the OL is a sieve then you won't make it either way. Henne can play well enough to get us there if the team as a whole deserves to go. What a franchise QB *can* do is get you over the top and make you a champion. Until we can get *that* guy, we could do a lot worse than Henne.

To go off on a tangent, the issue I have with this thinking is that finding that level of qb is easy. I think it would be easier to build a complete roster than find a qb capable of making scrubs superstars e.g Brady.
Honestly it's only about 4 qbs that are that good to take a bad team to the playoffs. Everyone else needs some type of quality roster around them.
This obsession with the qb position is what makes teams stay in the bottom of the league. The smart ones build rosters and magically the qb appears e.g Brady. It took him about 6 years to get to the level he is now. He is leaps and bounds better now than when he won Super Bowls.
If we focus on building a team I can almost guarantee the next qb we draft will look like the savior fog the franchise.

Seattle didn't simply wait to happen onto a QB. They tried a bunch of times before lucking into Wilson. They signed the backup from Green Bay to be their starter trying to find a QB. Yes, they built a decent squad before they got him, but the QB is what got them over the hump. I'm saying that you can't sleep on picking a QB. You don't get far in the playoffs without one. We desperately need a QB, and the best ones in this draft are Teddy, Johnny, Bortles, and Carr. I want one of those guys. We need to start making moves to be a force again. I'm tired of losing seasons and bleak outlooks, and am excited about how things are looking now especially if Dave takes a QB.

Yep, you have to be proactive in finding your quarterback. You can't just sit back and wait for one to fall into your lap one day.

This I agree with but I also think you have to focus on the roster. I constantly see this idea that the qb fixes everything and it doesn't unless the level of qb is Brady or Manning and how likely is it to get one of their caliber?
I do think we should be proactive but I also think I years like this is not the time to gamble on someone unless you think they are the guy or you have a roster ready to go. There are to many players in this draft that you might not want to pass over.
I really like Bridgewater but I also liked Geno and he went the one place I thought he couldn't survive because of the expectation. Had he come here I think the outcome would have been more favorable.

You liked Geno Smith and you like Birdgewater? Lol. I will stop following this team is we blow our first round pick on Bustwater. It's clear as day that this guy can't play in this league. Crappy college competition. Noodle arm. Built like a 12 year old. Tyrod Taylor, Tavares Jackson, Josh Johnson clone. And those guys had arms at least.

I like Teddy but what you are saying I agree with. He does remind me of all those guys.

Lol I know right. I do think those guys can play but they need to be in solid situations. I mainly said that to say qb is a hard position to evaluate. A guy like Brady Quinn has the tools but can't put it together, Russell Wilson doesn't fit the mold but can play. Some guys need to sit (Kaep) some guys can play from day one (Luck).
The thing I'm realizing is that it is a situation thing for about 90% of the qbs playing and that's the insight we should be using when talking about qb. Had the Browns had the first pick in 99 would Manning have dominated in Clevland, if we drafted Brady would he have been out of the league in 3 years?
