It's still a very close comparison.
So far,is Dave "aggressively modest" on first day of FA?

Quote:Sure, you named one, albeit one already on a higher, much higher level than Willie Young. Its "possible" Willie Young could, just as its possible my toaster might start shooting out $100 bills in the morning at breakfast, too.

I'm arguing that Willie Young is nothing more than a cog. Its a "meh" signing. Period.

Firstly, that's a stupid example you used with the toaster.  Not funny, and also not remotely accurate.

Secondly, I doubt Clemons was looked at as anything more than a "meh" signing when he signed for Seattle.  After all, the year prior to that, he year before that he recorded 3 sacks. So the similarities are stronger than you think.

It's a signing (if it happens) with upside.  You don't like it?  I'm not surprised.
I couldn't be more pleased on how free agency is shaping up. Red Bryant and Zane Beadles are major upgrades and Caldwell didn't break the bank for either. Gerhart is an excellent complement to Todman and Robinson and was probably signed at a reasonable price. Resigning Blackmon was a good move. Don't know much about Watson, but at the least he'll provide competition at linebacker and improve our special teams.

If the Jaguars are able to sign Willie Young and Thurmond, they should receive an A grade even if they fail to acquire any more significant free agents. However, I would love for them to sign one of the top 3 centers. Even if Mack is cost prohibitive, I'd be fine with Dietrich-Smith or DeLaPuente. With 11 draft picks, they will be able to continue to upgrade their roster. I have total confidence that Caldwell will continue to make the right choices- especially with their first pick. Whether they select their q.b. of the future, nobody (including Caldwell) can know for sure whether their choice will pan out. My guess is that if he really likes Bridgewater this will be his choice. If not, he'll take Mack which will give our defense the playmaker it has lacked since Brackens and he'll take either Garrapalo in the 2nd or someone else in a later round.

I can't wait for the draft to see how Caldwell continues to build this roster.

I feel like i'm almost a homer, being happy about each and every signing we've made, but I really do like what we've done. I've seen plenty of Gerhart, the guy to me is a good guy to bring in that fits the scheme and imo can be a 1,200 yard rusher if he gets the right amount of carries here. He isn't going to be a high tier rb, I see him more in that just above average range, but I'll take that, especially at just 3.5 per and 4.5 guaunteed.

Than you have Red Bryant who fits this scheme perfectly, great run stuffer and space eater that will open up opportunities for others. Got him for just 4-4.5M per, which is also a bargain imo.

As for Beadles, yes, a bit overpaid, but I think the "average at best" talk about him is absolutely ridiculous. He is definitely above average and a perfect fit as well. I really love what Dave/Gus and co are doing so far. Bring on Thurmond and this would be a nice FA. I'm sure we'll get target a couple others and sign a guy like Willie Young who would also fit the scheme and bring some upside in the pass rush, especially playing LEO.

I disagree on the job Caldwell did today in FA...it was subpar, nothing special. Beadles was solid, the deal was on par with everyone else.Thats the only good signing for caldwell today. Bringing back blackmon was ok, nothing to get excited over. We dont really know what we will get with Gerhert, id like to see numbers but Its meh.

We havent signed Young, who I am not impressed with at all .

I like Thurmond but he is just a Nickel and unsigned regardless of what so many people say on here.

Dont want Watson at all. He wasnt that great at FSU and will just be a guy here.

I understand not making a play for a big name DE/LEO if you have your sights set on one at 3. The hints of Decker are just smoke, cant see him not going to Indy. Alfie said he heard hints of Ben Tate...guess he was wrong (REALLY??? sarcasm)... Id preferred to have made a play for Mack, Dietrick Smith or Schwartz and maybe we did, it is a two way street. I didnt see the video where Dave talks about Mack so forgive me on that one guys...I will look for it after this post.

I just think we signed filler guys with the exception of Beadles. Toby isnt guaranteed a starting role and may not be better than the other two guys we have.

EDIT: Forgot Bryant, good signing where we overpaid a little imo. He will be very helpful to this team though

We really don't know how a player will be until he gets into the system. But I don't think they brought here expecting double digit sacks.
Actually he isn't. But most folks are blinded and will continue to be. When these FAs turn out like others in the past, I'll watch and see who's still "happy" with all these signings. Probably the same folks who trusted in Gene lol

You must be a Gabbert fan
Quote:Uh, he'll be 29....how many NFL DE's "break out" at 29 when they've been nothing more than a cog their entire careers??????

Oh, they'll turn out like Sen'Derrick Marks, Alan Ball, Geno Hayes, etc? The guys Caldwell (his first year) signed last year? Alright, sounds good to me.
I like the Red Bryant and Will Blackmon signings, with the Gerhart deal being my favorite. But I'm really on the fence on Zane Beadles. $6M/yr, $13M guaranteed for a guard? He better be a top 15 guard.

Caldwell has done everything he said he would do.  Use free agency to plug holes and upgrade overall talent.  But he isnt going to break the bank on free agents.  Which I dont blame him at all.  Has there been any free agent out there worth big time money?  Teams usually re-sign their star players and let the other guys walk.  This year is no different.

You do realize that Uche was scheduled to make 5.4 million this year, correct?
I'm happy at what we have accomplished so far. Again, we are heading in the right direction. Everyone griping about overpaying a player, we have to consider that sometimes we will have to. Seeing as we don't have the national respect, media coverage, nor championships/history to lure players here. Sometimes, if we want them bad enough, we have to pay a little more say a New England, Green Bay, or 49er. Until we have something else to bring to the table, we have to pay. I don't see any of the signing as bad or breaking the bank. So good job so far!

GO JAGS!

I agree, the Bryant and Gerhart are my favorites so far.

Uche's contract averaged $4.2M/yr, with $9.5M in guarantees for a 6-year contract. And he was younger than Beadles is today, when that contract was signed.

Hopefully the guarantees in the Beadles contract are in the latter years of the contract in the form of roster bonuses.

Brown?

This pretty much sums up you have no idea who or what you are talking about.
