Quote:Will do thanks. I've got quite a bit of time before I get there though  Smile

I go full Synthetic, Mobil One. Changed at 1000 miles, 2500 miles, 5000 miles, 10,000 miles and just changed at 15,000.

you'll be fine, you don't have to go full synthetic either but if you want to use it that's fine as well.
Quote:The service guide tells you to change it every 10k miles on the TDI I'm just telling you from experience I've seen it a dozen times at about 8k those cartridge filters start falling apart. Heck just last year I had a Volvo (they also do 10k service intervals) with less than 90k miles on it come through with a blown engine. He had been doing the services at 10k like recommended but after his last service his filter completely fell apart and he drove about 500 miles without an oil filter that was it for the engine. He had the records where the service had been completed they changed the filter and everything. Volvo told him that because he didn't change his oil at a Volvo dealership, it was a Tuffy or something like that, he was out of luck.

I've personally gone to change cartridge filters at about 7k miles and they literally fall apart in my hands. Those rubber seals that go around the cartridge filter also get brittle and start to leak out of your housing assembly.

It cost roughly 30 bucks to change the cartridge filter out, maybe less you could honestly do it yourself. but that extra step makes SO much difference in the longevity of a car.

Remember the dealership service guide is just a guide, it doesn't factor in recalls after that guides printed, known problems that always come up, extreme temperatures or road conditions and so on. It's not a bible it's just a guide. Honestly those things are written by engineers that want your car to last just long enough to get out of warranty. It's a minimum guide at best.

You had originally said that the cartridge had to be changed at 5K miles which won't hurt it obviously but it may increase costs unnecessarily which is my point. The difference between 8K and 10K falls inside the range of the normal service interval though so if it gives people peace of mind to change it more frequently, then they should go for it.

Yes in my professional opinion you're asking for trouble if you leave ANY cartridge filter in a vehicle for 10k miles. I've seen them break down to many times.

Wait....so when I get my oil changed on its normal basis at whatever garage, they are changing this cartridge thing right??

Are you talking about the oil filter or no?

Don't they replace the oil and filter at every routine oil change??

yes, yes and yes.

I was just confused by the way Eric kept saying that its important to also replace the "cartridge" or how the "cartridge" was falling apart by 7000 miles, etc etc....

I was wondering why someone would get an oil change but not have the filter (cartridge?) also replaced??

He is saying to do both at 8K miles if I'm understanding him right. You'd have to be really fast to change the filter but not the oil haha.

haha yeah, i was assuming he was having the old filter put back or something.

Well for the tdi, the regular service interval is 10K miles. He was saying you should do it more often, 5K or 8K. Personally, I would go by the manufactuer's recommendation but changing it sooner won't harm anything other than possibly your wallet. ;-)

I'll see if the YouTube cameraman is available that day.
Also....for the VW TDI's....

How much is diesel gas in comparison to the normal reg octane gas required on most cars? I rarely pay attention to diesel prices...

Also is diesel gas as easy to get as regular? Do all stations carry it? i.e. wouldn't want to be stuck out in the boonies somewhere and pull up to some mom & pop gas station stuck on E, to find out they don't sell diesel....

Well, here the price range for each are pretty comparable with diesel usually being slightly more expensive but a diesel engine will usually have better mileage than a comparable gas engine -- enough to more than offset the sometimes higher costs.

Diesel can sometimes be hard to find. Most stations have at least one diesel pump but it isn't always the case.

The thing that's funny to me is that diesel cost less to refine than gas but runs at or above the same prices as premium. One of the links above showed that the difference is in "distribution and marketing". In my opinion, gas companies don't want to see a large segment of diesel passanger cars in the US and this is one way they're trying to discourage it.
I wouldn't touch a TDI based on their reliability history (or rather, lack thereof.)

Diesel is more expensive in the States? How the heck does that work? It's €1,40/liter for diesel versus €1,71/liter for regular gas where I live.

Welcome to American capitalism consumerism.

Hasn't the VW product been getting vastly improved reliablility of late?

Per what I've read, that unreliability tag is still stemming largely from decades ago.
