Quote:I'm of the opinion that none of those four are long-term answers at the QB position. From that perspective, it seems to me that changing out Henne with any of them is simply change for change's sake; something I do not think has any merit.

Henne had bad games, and he's probably going to have a few more but I'm willing to let him continue on here until a better, long-term answer is found.

I agree with you.

In my opinion, if a team can rush the passer using only their front four, like Seattle did in the Super Bowl, that's almost as good as having a franchise quarterback.    I don't think Russell Wilson is an elite quarterback at all.  He has a great defense and running game.

Not that I think he's the long term solution, but I personally think Chad Henne can win a lot of games if we give him a solid defense and running game.  There's more than one way to build a great team, and if you can't get a franchise QB, you have to avail yourself of what presents itself.
Quote:When every team you play except for the utter dregs of the league are sitting starters in the third quarter and having a sideline party and good laugh during the game that is an indication that no one is afraid of your QB.

I don't expect to find an elite guy in free agency, but if Henne is Caldwell's answer then he's asking the wrong questions.

If we have a front four that crushes their QB, they won't be doing all that celebrating.

Is anyone afraid of Russell Wilson?   No.   But everyone is afraid of that Seattle defense.
Quote:It's funny how he compares Matt Ryan to Peyton Manning. Other than how they both fall off a cliff in the playoffs Ryan's career is more like Jay Cutler's so far.

I'm sure it had something to do with GM'S he learned from making those picks.

First you underestimate Wilson. Second I don't believe the Jaguars should neglect developing the rest of the team, I believe the Jaguars shouldn't accept a guy whose level is "unreliable backup you hope never has to be in the game" as the default guy to go with just because he's been here for two horrendously bad seasons.

You have excellent taste my friend!

But seriously, roster building is about upgrading. The only time that you replace a player is when you are upgrading him. If you can't upgrade Henne, then you leave him be until someone better becomes available.

Yet you suggest Seneca Wallace?

So I take it you're for the "walking on this broken glass and rock salt really hurts, but that ground over there doesn't look great either, so I think I'll just keep walking on this broken glass and rock salt instead of seeing if that other path really is as painful as this" route.

Change for change is silly. Wallace is bad. Getting someone bad to replace someone who might be more or less bad makes no sense. Significant upgrade I can get behind. The guys you mentioned, IMO are not.
Quote:False dilemma. There are lots of QBs better than Henne around. Just because he doesn't waste draft picks on guys who aren't worth taking doesn't mean he shouldn't sign someone in free agency who isn't afraid to throw the ball more than 3 yards past the line of scrimmage unless it's to the other team.

That's no dilemma at all.  It's a short term solution.

You're not hitching your wagon to Henne for the long haul.  You're continuing to search for your long term solution.
Quote:Henne was chosen over Gabbert when Gabbert was healthy, so I doubt it.

But Gabbert was named the starter going into the season. Also look at the comments Bradley made about Gabbert never having a full season to sit on the bench and develop that way.  Well now he has.  Plus how likely is it that they even can resign Henne?  As bad as he is as a starter, he's still one of the top free agent QBs right now and several teams possibly are going to want to sign him.  And if I were Henne, I wouldn't assume I would be starter if I signed with the Jags, because I probably have no clue what they do in the draft.  Just saying, Gabbert in 2014 is still a possibility.

In the long view who starts this season is almost irrelevant. In the short term view it does matter to the fans that will be watching the games.

The team shouldn't hamstring itself in the short term wasting draft picks on bad QBs or signing free agent QBs to elite money, but that doesn't mean the team shouldn't be trying to field the most entertaining team possible in the short term.
Quote:I'd take Michael Vick over Henne. If we stick with Henne, it will be another 4-5 win season.

I usually hate the idea of signing discarded FA quarterbacks to be starters, but if you take what Caldwell is saying as it pertains to Chad Henne's role and why they want to resign him and replace it with Michael Vick, everything sounds a whole lot better for 2014.  Don't know what kind of deal it would be for Henne vs Vick, but yea, I'll take Vick.
Quote:What that quote tells me its bridgewater or bust because the other qb's don't standout as franchise guys. Bridgewater seems to me more like matt ryan than any other guy in this draft.

What about Bortles?  Manziel is too mercurial.
good read!!!!
Quote: Was Brunell a franchise QB?

Were the Jaguars wrong in getting him?
You mean they traded for someone else's backup?  Oh the panic that should have ensued.

David Caldwell on drafting a Qb. Some people aren't going to like this read. I think a interesting read.
I could see us taking a QB in rounds 3 or 4 and starting Henne while we develop him.

Quote:What about Bortles?  Manziel is too mercurial.

That would be interesting.  Seems like we're not even considering that possibility around here.  We may be a little shell shocked from the last time a quarterback with a weird goofy name nobody ever heard of just comes out of nowhere and is a top draft prospect all of a sudden.
Did Gabbert come from nowhere? He was projected as #1 for a while. Newton was the one who shot up draft boards that year.

Yes he did.  Newton was the most popular player in college football and was considered a top pick long before most people had even heard of Gabbert.  Gabbert became a "top pick" during draft talk time.  He just all of a sudden started appearing in mock drafts one day.
