Quote:In the long view who starts this season is almost irrelevant. In the short term view it does matter to the fans that will be watching the games.
The team shouldn't hamstring itself in the short term wasting draft picks on bad QBs or signing free agent QBs to elite money, but that doesn't mean the team shouldn't be trying to field the most entertaining team possible in the short term.
Pretty much this. The point is to be flexible, as the article points out. Part of that flexibility is to up grade the qb. If our guy isn't there, you have to look at the free agent options and make a good decision.
We all trust that Dave won't overpay on MJD. Why are we giving him such little faith in potentially up grading the QB in free agency while still not hamstringing us from developing our future QB?
Quote:Certainly doesn't sound like he's afraid to pass if the QB isn't there. Must mean he's got a case of the "QB fear".. LOL.
Caldwell:
Quote:"I'd rather get backlash from (not picking a quarterback) than backlash from picking the wrong guy,"
He definitely has "QB fear" lol.
Or maybe he, like some of us, realize that the QBs available aren't worthy of all the hype this message board is giving them.
Clowney goes #3 if available. Look for a developmental type QB in the later rounds.

Putting on clown shoes and shaking folks hands with buzzers may sound fun to you, but it's no way to run an NFL franchise.
Fans are expecting improvement that can be sustained over the long haul, not gimmicks.

And upgrade in free agency... :-)

You've convinced me. RE-SIGN CHECKDOWN CHAD! :thanks:
I hate it when good threads are derailed by an obsessed poster's tired, broken record agenda.
That said - The more I learn about Caldwell - the more I like him. This offseason will give us a much better idea on his skill at building a roster. I think his patience is commendable in a business where hastiness can get you in cap trouble and leave your team starved for young talent.
At some point in this year's draft the Jags will draft a QB. If they get a good one - there's a strong possibility he'll start before the end of the season IMO. For that reason - I'm not concerned about the possibility of Henne starting on opening day. Josh McCown is the only guy I see in free agency that might represent enough of an upgrade to be worth looking at. Maybe. The rest are just more of the same lower tier re-treads. I trust Caldwell to make sure there's competition in camp - and if Henne emerges the best option for the time being - so be it. We don't even know if he'll be a Jaguar in 2014 yet.
I'm excited about the draft and free agency period - and I expect this team to get better between now and September. I'm not gonna let QB anxiety ruin it for me.
Great article.
Quote:If he doesn't pick a quarterback in the 1st two rounds, Gabbert will be brought back from the dead and will be starting day 1.
I will be shocked if Gabbert makes the opening day roster. If we select a QB in the draft he is good as gone.
I enjoyed reading this article. I also like the feel I get from this front office, as well as the coaching staff. The picture in the article with Joeckel was a little painful, but with his return it will be like having another first round pick. If possibly having Blackmon back on the team this next season, it could be a huge jump from where we have been. I am excited to see how competitive we are going to be, especially if the QB position can play up to the top third in the league. Having such a young team gives me a lot of hope.

All Caldwell has to do is hit a few buttons on his laptop and up comes a quarterback to evaluate on the big screen. While we sat in his office, we watched one passer and several other players on the big screen ...

I told him I would not identify the players.

Watching tape with a tried-and-true personnel man was a treat for me.
I bet we'll get a glimpse of what Prisco saw with Caldwell in upcoming articles and mock drafts. While Prisco told him that he would identify the player, I can't help but believe that Prisco will allow that experience to influence his opinion. We'll probably see a QB jump on Prisco's boards (if he has them).
I can't help but think of that picture of Gus and Dave in the nearly empty War Room. Maybe all the doors are open because there is still nothing worth stealing!

(just in case you didn't know that pic was NOT the Jags war room)

I'm of a similar opinion if you took Henne and these FA QB's at face value. But I think Henne gets the edge having been in the system for a year, and having proven a somewhat capable leader in the staff's eyes.
Regarding your first point, I'm almost rooting for the guy just out of sheer curiosity as to the level of internet stroke out a certain poster may reach.

Or fears QB purgatory.
I'm thinking that he will choose a qb with the 3rd pick but he's doing what he can to prevent someone from trading with Rams to get ahead of us. So, he's just acting like he's going to grab a qb later in the draft.

I don't see a free agent QB who would be enough of an upgrade from Henne to make it worth the trouble.

Michael Vick.

Prisco just came out with a mock yesterday and has the Jags passing on Johnny and Teddy for Clowney. Not sure if we can read into that any?

Michael Vick.[/quote
I agree. Vick is better than Hennepin without question. His issue is always durability but for the right price who cares? He would be an exciting free agent, low cost and hardly any down side.
I'm no longer sure a qb will be selected at 3. This is probably a good thing because Dave needs to focus on making this a better team and if he thinks he can get more bang for his buck another way than I'm all for it, whether it be taking the ba defensive p or trading down.
I hope the whole organization isn't dumping with the doors open.
