Uche, Alualu, Rackley, Lewis, Gabbert any or all of these guys should be let go.

The funny thing about an OLine is that a mobile QB will often compensate for the lack of talent there -- as long as he has a good Left Tackle that keeps him from being blindsided.

Anyways, my surprise cut is Mike Brown. The Jaguars are stacked at receiver when you consider Blackmon but I also believe that the Jaguars will select multiple receivers in the later rounds and even bring in some UDFAs that will beat him out.

Quote:It don't think it is an 'issue' in your simple scenario, but there is possibly a 'lost opportunity' of the funds being used to overpay a player. For instance, if you can use the $4.8m saved by releasing an underperforming Uche, and use the same funds to acquire a better guard (or another identified position upgrade) on the FA market, it's an opportunity a good GM is paid to make happen to better a team's roster. Uche is being paid overly well to be a difference maker in the position; he's not.

If you look at page one of this string, I did not list Uche as one of my surprise cuts, as I think getting the center and the other guard solved this year is enough...I think Uche is safe for another year. My post shortly ago on Uche was about the cap implication, as some questioned what financial impact his release could have. My later post was not about Uche, but about your comment that anyone making more than minimum wage should be released.

We were talking purely in fiscal terms and I was being sarcastic. In purely fiscal terms it makes sense to have the lowest paid workforce you can get, of course in business terms that's suicide which is why I made the factious point about cutting everyone.

We have a stupidly low cap number, we simply do not need to release players to make cap room for new ones. If we want to splash out on a guard in FA, we can do that, our cap number will still be tiny. At this stage, I think it is much better for the team to have a few overpaid solid starters like Uche, Lewis and Poz than to cut them because they make too much money without securing a viable replacement first. If we draft a couple of OL, sign a decent FA or two, and some of the jars on the shelf like Nowak or McClendon make a push, then Uche is probably gone, but until that happens he is our best interior OL and that means he has to stay even if he is getting paid better than he is playing.
Quote:Well, thats kinda like when Mike Sims Walker was our best WR....

Produces not excuses
Quote:Not happening. Brewster is horribad.

I swear people only like him because draftnicks thought he would be a mid rounder.
A lot of venom for Uche. I must be in the minority, but I am fine with him. The team moved to a new blocking scheme and he has been next to a solid, but average and old veteran in Meester and for most of the year an unproven RT (after two years next to human turnstile Guy Whimper). To hear some people say we should cut him is worrisome since there is no better option on this roster. LG for me has been the glaring hole. I feel if we get a solid LG and C this offseason, those bashing Uche might find he isn't as bad as perceived. Hating on his salary is a bit nit picky to me as he got a bump in pay due to performance on the field. You can hate on Gene for that, but I look at it as a guy seeing a goal and meeting it to kick in escalators. Let's just have this new regime set a new goal for him. Feel free to bash my opinion, but I would be happy with Uche for the next few years so long as we are building a better supporting cast around him.
Gabbert.

Good post. I agree with your line of thinking.

Also, on Jaguars Thursday, throughout the year the guys threw out a lot of innuendo that Uche was dealing with some kind of injury throughout the year. Uche certainly didn't have his best year but if he's healthy and now versed in the scheme I think it will be hard to sign or draft a second guard (because we all know LG is getting taken care of first) to come in and actually perform better than him.

I feel like those resources are better used on other positions for 2014. 2015 might and should be a different story.

Would that really be a surprise?
Poz would be too much dead money if cut so there's no benefit there if he's still at least a tackling machine.

I could see Brewster, Rackley, and Uche being gone if we draft a guy or two and bring in a couple free agents.

I have a feeling that MJD is not going to be back after we draft another RB to compete with Todman.  Robinson didn't do much of anything, but if he can bulk up like he was supposed to, then maybe he can become the guy he was drafted to be.

Alualu shouldn't be cut.  He had a good year at his place on the line.  The problem is his place on the line doesn't generate a lot of stats because his job is to set the edge and not move, which he did consistently well last season.  It ain't sexy, but it's what he was told to do and he had a good year doing it.

I want Henne, Gabbert, and Scott all gone.  If Scott wasn't good enough to make it on the field as a backup with Gabbert on the team, then he should probably be gone.  I would not be surprised to see us go the way of Washington and draft 2 QB's.  Free agency is not going to be an area to pick up a QB.  Henne is going to be one of the top free agent QB's this year, and that says a lot.

Lewis probably won't be cut, simply because he's the best TE on the team and it's by a pretty wide margin.  He is basically a second tackle when asked to block, and he's a mismatch for every safety in the league because of his shear size and ability to catch.  He isn't winning any foot races, but he goes up for contested balls as well as anybody else.

I'm really interested to see what they do in the defensive backfield.  Last years draft was focused a lot back there and it appears they made strides, but is it enough to not bring in more guys?  I dunno.  Joyner looks pretty good as a second rounder if he falls that far.

Gabbert would surprise you, Dave?
Quote:I'm gonna say Russell Allen. I think our coaching staff believes in LaRoy Reynolds and wants to keep developing him.

 Russell Allen -

3/13/2012: Signed a three-year, $6 million contract. The deal contains $2.6 million guaranteed. Another $3 million is available through incentives. 2014: $1.975 million, 2015: Free Agent

I would think that they would keep Russell seeing how he will want to play hard for his FA year.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Talking about Free Agents...  ( i expect green will  stay red will go)

Mike Brown, WR, 2014 Exclusive Rights Free Agent, he showed great hands at times being open but wasnt that fast.

Brandon Deaderick, DT, 2014 Exclusive Rights Free Agent,

Will Blackmon, CB, Free Agent, He played great too but again not the fastest so I wouldnt expect them to break the bank to keep him.

Clay Harbor, TE, Free Agent, I dont even remember this guy, but I assume he wont remain.

Chad Henne, QB, Free Agent - If he is kept I will bang my head on a wall until it bleeds so please buy me some bandaids based on OC comments they will resign him.

Maurice Jones-Drew, HB - He deserves the right to remain in Jacksonville at top 5 RB pay but not for 4 years like he wants so based on GM Dave's comments about Mojo deserves the right to test the waters - translation no franchise tag - i expect he'll leave the Jags Sad

Kyle Love, DT - Free Agent, I expect he'll be gone due to the depth we have.

Austin Pasztor, OL - He played great I cant imagine they wont resign him unless he wants too much.

Allen Reisner, TE - Free Agent, He played good but he wasnt as good as M. Lewis whom many have said hasnt done enough so I expect he'll leave.

Will Ta'ufo'ou, FB - Free Agent, I expect he'll be the first cut.  At least Greg was good at blocking this guy stinks at both.

Jordan Toddman, HB, He'll be gone too because he had flashes some other team will take a shot at him.

Taylor Price, WR, - I dont see him returning.

Sam Young, Tackle - He'll be gone.

-----------------------

Roy Miller, DT - Will remain

3/15/2013: Signed a two-year, $4.5 million contract. The deal included a $650,000 signing bonus. 2014: $2.375 million, 2015: Free Agent

along with DT Marks

12/27/2013: Signed a five-year, $19.5 million contract. The deal contains $8 million guaranteed, including a $1 million signing bonus. Another $4 million is available through incentives based on Pro Bowl berths and sacks. 2014-2015: $3 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due in March), 2016-2017: $3.45 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due in March), 2018: Free Agent

--------------------------

Babin & Tyson Alualu contracts are pricey with poor performance I'm not certain either will stay but Babin would be worth keeping at least...

WoW

Luke's contract

6/22/2013: Signed a four-year, $21.2 million contract. The deal is fully guaranteed, including a $13,799,344 signing bonus. 2014: $1,368,709, 2015; $2,332,418, 2016: $3,296,127, 2017: Free Agent

Crazy huh?
Just a general thought.   If the Jaguars cut or traded any player that was on the roster before Dave Caldwell took over as GM,   it wouldn't surprise me.  The only exceptions would be players that received contract extensions since Caldwell became GM.   In the type of massive rebuilding situation that Caldwell and Gus Bradley are heading,  the vast majority of the pre-Caldwell Jaguars won't end up being part of the long term plan/ solution.

I could see them bringing Clay Harbor back on the cheap.

Pasztor is an ERFA - they can offer him a very reasonable deal and keep him easily and cheaply.

(They've already said they intend to negotiate with Henne to stick around - so don't hurt yourself too badly! )
I would be surprised if they cut Fred Taylor. Really surprised.
Quote:Gabbert.
I wouldnt call that a surprise

Link? I saw the post season presser and it was not definitive they would move to re-sign Henne. Have they said anything on him more recently?

IIRC Will was actually lauded by Gus/Dave for playing well this year. He was one of the only names mentioned when Dave was asked who he they were OK with going forward on offense in a recent presser.

I admit I don't always focus on the FB but he seemed fine to me. Helped lead the way on one of MJD's longest runs of the year.
