Quote:He is the number 3 QB. He's done very little prep to play a game.

That said the whole idea a QB could be ruined because he plays badly when give a shot at the end of a car crash season with a lame duck HC and a team that gave up weeks ago is laughable. If he lacks the mental toughness to deal with that kind of hardship, he shouldn't even be playing company softball.

So I said that somewhere?

Who's fault is that? That has to be on the coaching staff. They continue to keep Chad Henne at backup QB, even though he has a career losing record and more interceptions than touchdowns. I don't know if Brandon Allen is good or bad, but I know what Chad Henne is and there is no way he should be the backup QB. If the coaching staff was halfway competent, they would have cut him, made Allen the backup and then he would've gotten the necessary reps to come into a meaningless game at the end of the season and we could draw a reasonable evaluation. This is just another example of how this coaching staff has hindered this team.
He should start at least one game. Isn't Blake's shoulder bad enough to warrant a late-season trip to the IR without it essentially looking like the team has given up on him?

We've already seen Allen in preseason and he is no better than Henne. The boy needs blocking and a better runner. Better blocking will produce a better runner.

So we are going nowhere this year. What's the harm in getting the kid some reps? I mean, isn't he like disposable to some degree? If he is no better than Henne, then let's see that, so we know that we need 3 new QB's. No one is expecting him to work a miracle. But let's see some evidence of what we have on the shelf.
We need two new qb's, bortles plus two others to compete.

Bortles can ride the bench.
So does he have a chance to play now with an interim coach?

We were calling for it last year. When will they give the kid a chance?
Bortles will be cut fairly soon.

Henne and Allen will compete for the starting gig but my guess is Henne for week 1 starter.
I'm not freaking out just yet about anything from the second preseason game.
But with Bortles looking as lost and hesitant as he did --- I think giving Allen a single series with the ones in pre-week three isn't exactly crazy-talk from an evaluation standpoint.

Put him out there with the first team offense at the end of the first half or early third quarter for a series and see what happens.

Not much to lose there.
I keep hearing "what do we have to lose" and "give him a chance." What do you think has been going on? He's been getting a chance. Even though the QB situation is awful, he's still the number 3 guy. As far as the "what do we have to lose" argument? Yeah, that'll go over well with the team. "Guys, I know Chad has outplayed Brandon in every way. I know he's earned this spot. However, I'm going to ignore all that and play Brandon because who knows, he could be the next Drew Brees."
He'll start in the event Henne can't get it done. We have two weeks left before the regular season kicks off. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Bortles. Anything can happen. But I am going to assume that Henne starts against the Panthers. And he very well ends up winning the job and is the starter against the tinhorns on opening day.

If we go back to Bortles after benching him this year. And he gets injured. We'll have to eat his $18M or $19M cap hit next year. I don't know if he's worth it at that point. If you bench him you're declaring to the NFL and the team and fan base that he's not worthy of the time, trouble and money. So I would assume as well that Allen has a chance to start next after Henne.

Well then answer the question.

What does the team actually have to lose by giving Allen a single series with the ones in the third quarter on the 24th of this month?

That's NOT going to create some mutinous discord among the players. If anything, it sends a message that open competition is real and not just lip service from the coaches.

This is a front office/coaching staff that brought in no competition for QB, LG, or Kicker, and has the worst record in the NFL over the past 5 years and you want to trust their judgement?

And don't say it's a new regime.  Marrone has been here for years, Caldwell is still the GM, and even our coordinators are the same as last year.

I just saw the list of worst QBR ratings, and only Mark Sanchez is worse than Chad Henne and Blake Bortles.  SO you want 2 of the 3 worst QB's competing for the starting position?  Allen had a decent showing in his limited action.  What could it really hurt?

We're not making the playoffs with either Henne OR Bortles anyway.

How is it a meaningful competition if Allen gets a shot when he hasn't earned it? They've seen Allen ever since he's arrived and yet Marrone still doesn't even considering him worth mentioning at the post game press conference until asked. He said both his QBs. You're basically arguing for Marrone and the staff to ignore everything they have seen and give him a chance anyway. We'll find out in game 3 whether Allen is really in the mix. I expect him to be the third guy. It wouldn't shock me if they brought in a vet to be the backup if BB5 is cut.
I've haven't seen enough of Allen's play to make an educated speculation on whether he's capable of carrying the team. I don't think anyone has. I agree with NYC, let him run with the 1s next week for a few drives and see how he handles it. Bortles is incorrigible at this point. Like Henne, consistency is a glaring issue. Yes, both are capable of playing well, but for how long is the question because each will sharply regress at any given moment and take the team with them. Both are proven to be untrustworthy and should no longer be even considered as a future component of a starting team.
If Allen proves to be incapable, then the FO needs to start looking in earnest for someone serviceable to play the season. It's time for the fans to realize that our recovery ain't happening this season. As it stands now, we do not have a QB...nor a kicker. Our two biggest points making positions remain unfilled with two games to go before the season begins. While it's not quite time to panic, we are faced with a dire situation.
I say sit Bortles/put him on IR until his arm soreness goes away. Then give Allen the start this week for few series against the 1's. Then let Chad have some series. I think it's a good idea to let Chad know that if he doesn't produce, Allen is at his heels ready to take the starting job. And let the better QB win the starting job. This is the best I have seen Henne play, but I would say that Allen has done just as well

I second this provided the IR placement won't automatically kick in his guarantee.

With the designation to return, his arm should be nice and rested by the time he's eligible to play if needed.
What's RGIII doing these days?
