Don't get me wrong.  I enjoyed Mincey's story and how he found a place here for a few seasons as a nice player.  But, the last contract was obviously out of line.

I am sad about this - Mincey was a great guy with the fans and I really felt like he had potential... but I do understand this is a business and I am glad to see the management taking a firm stand against things they feel are not in the best interest of the team.  I wish him well in the future and hope he gets whatever is wrong straightened out and catches on somewhere else.

Both are being held accountable for repeat issues. But one receives a more harsh punishment than the other because of his star status and potential. One loses his job. The other remains employed but suspended.

Unemployment doesn't equal employment. Are those equal punishments to you?

It happens all the time around the league, not just the Jaguars. The scrub backup player gets to be made an example of while the star player gets chance after chance after chance.

Do you dispute that?

A man beats up a cop and goes to jail for 5 years.

Another man robs a bank and goes to jail for 10 years.

5 years =/= 10 years.  The man who beat up the cop is clearly not being held accountable.

This move saves almost five million off of the cap next year, so I love it for that alone. A rotational player like Mincey can't have a cap hold that large, especially with weak production.

I hope the same rationale is used for another player wasting gobs of cap space, #89 giraffe.

They should do the same with Poz. Use all that extra cap space to sign the best center and guard they can and the best d-linemen they can find.

I'd be cool with that

My guess is that Poz's contract will be renegotiated.  He's too valuable to the team right now to deal away.

Valuable? :ermm:

We're 4-9. One of the worst statistical defenses in football.

I don't think a Poz departure, is all that big of a deal. At his age?

Contract renegotiation just pushes more money to the future. Unless its a flat out pay cut with no money pushed ahead, I'm not in favor of keeping him here.

Right. If they go to him and ask if he'd rather be cut or just take a 60-75% pay cut and he opts for the pay cut I could see him staying on, but typically guys don't accept that, and he likely could get something lower than he's being paid now, but still higher than what the Jaguars should spend on him in the open market.

I don't know if the Jaguars are bold enough to do it as he may be the best player on an abysmal defense, but it's the direction they NEED to move.
He's third in the NFL on tackles, isn't injury prone, and brings a leadership component to the locker room.  I see little risk in retaining him if the price is right.

Isn't injury prone?

In 7 seasons he's only played in all 16 games 3 times. He actually is a bit injury prone. He'll also turn 30 early next season. Not that he's too old to play, but he's not a guy that should be seen as a core player for what should be the upcoming run of success once the Jaguars actually get a QB.

How many games total has he missed since he's been here?

One. It was fortunate enough for him that his most major injury while playing for the Jaguars (torn labrum) occurred in the final game of that season.

It seems to me his only negative at this point is his contract, which can be renegotiated.  I say keep him around.
I'll be very disappointed if we cut Poz, he's definitely been one of our better and most reliable players in the last few years.

Now I know the argument, 'we're rebuilding, we need cap space..etc etc' and I understand we're rebuilding..

But you need to show your players/owners and fans you are getting better each year in a rebuilding period...and cutting Poz will make us worse.

Keep him for the next couple of years, we have plenty of cap space and when we feel we're ready to make the run..then you replace him.

Right now he is a model player both on the pitch and off...the latter will be invaluable to players like Blackmon.
You guys realize that there is a cap floor and were near it right? Guys like Poz and Babin could be saved by that fact alone. As long as they are productive, there is no reason to let them go!

As long as any player is productive, (and there is no immediate upgrade) no reason to let them go.

Poz isn't productive?

Poz is 3rd in the NFL in tackles and Babin leads the team with 5.5 sacks. No reason not to stick around.
