....maybe Mack + Orakpo.

I wouldn't bet against it this offseason. Not with 50 MIL to play with and those 2 filling significant positions of need. (Meester can't play forever)

Quote:Could be - and I'd have no gripe with that. Caldwell is primed to do so, if there's a worthy player in his eyes.  Hitting on a big FA signing would be great for the organization on a number of levels. (as you implied) Might even help get a few more fans in the stadium on Sundays.

Could you imagine the momentum/ hype generated for this team if they win at least 2 of last 3 (best if all 3) and sign a player like Orakpo, and get our QB in the draft??

I'm thinking waiting list not too far away...

Well those tarps could make lots of room if we get into that situation - but I like where your head's at!

This would be perfect......I mentioned it a few months ago that Orakpo was going to be a FA the Jags should consider and go after heavy. Redskins haven't tried locking him up yet which is a surprise, but getting both of these players in FA would be a huge, HUGE move for DC.

I think so. I mean to be honest, I think Jax actually drew very well these past 3 years considering how hopeless the situation has been for most of that time. We have not had a game blacked out since like 2009, and have averaged somewhere close to 60K in attendance. Thats pretty good support for such a lousy team if you ask me. I am not so sure many other NFL cities would have been as supportive during such a prolonged period of despair.

If the Jags continue building on this momentum and add to it by an exciting offseason - the sky's the limit!
I know he has a problem and has been getting older, but I think Brandon Browner will be a free agent target.

Wait?,,,,the guy that just got suspended.....again....?

No thanks.

We already have one of those that we need to deal with. I don't want 2.

He'd easily be worth the money, but there's no way Cleveland lets him go via free agency. He'll be franchised.

That's an interesting idea, you know Gus and his love of his former Seattle guys. Love the way those guys play D over there. I want that kind of attitude and swagger out of my defense and I think Browner can help bring that. Another name that I would like to see is Jairus Byrd who is currently franchised tagged in Buffalo. Although we might stay the course and roll with those young guys we have in our secondary.

Quote:Orakpo anyone?

Orakpo, Michael Johnson, and Greg Hardy are all scheduled to be free agents and I'm not sure if any of their teams have enough space to re-sign them.

Brian De La Puente and John Asomoah are also two good offensive linemen we should look at in free agency.
If this article is corretct,

This team is looking at 30 million in cap space and can carry over 20 more for a total of 50 million under the cap.  There is going to be some serious free agent action from Caldwell this year.  It would be nice to get a couple of top tier players.

The biggest issue is with free agents wanting to come to Jacksonville. Although, if the team can continue it's momentum to the end of the season it does make it more appealing from a team on it's way up view point.

I'm more worried about a "top tier" fA taking the bucks and becoming a diva. Caldwell has found some goof players for Gus without going overboard.

We should handle the billies and the stinking tacks (chew on it jcbrave)...as mentioned in another thread the clots will be resting, so we better take that too.

And there you have it, 7-9.
Haven't read this whole thread, but don't we have to spend up to a certain percent of the cap this year?

...and if that article is correct and we will have around 50 million to spend...WOW.
Quote:Paul Vance was the Jags well known long time capologist, but he was let go last year and Sashi Brown was hired to be the new one.

Brown was already on the staff. He was Vance's assistant.

Free agents go where the money is. The Jags will have plenty of that.

It appears Sashi Brown is with the Browns now.    http://www.linkedin.com/pub/sashi-brown/5/176/ab9
Caldwell has already shown that he has an eye for talent.  The 2013 draft is showing big results and I am not even including Joeckle who was looking good before the injury.  Caldwell also found talent in FA while spending very little.

Bradley and Caldwell's plan has come to fruition.  There plan was to just get better.  The Jaguars were simply terrible the first half of the season.  It is very promising to see how this coaching staff adjusted to the first half of the season.  They simplified the gameplan and opened up the playbook.  Jaguars and the Fans should be exicted to see this team is on the rise.  A complete 180 from how the season started.

2014 looks exciting

We should tend to the draft and avoid the obvious pitfalls of free agency.

If we commit to taking the best player available each and every pick in three to five years our roster will be loaded, we'll have a cycle of talent that assures depth, and we'll be on cycle to become active in the assets market, which will provide annual returns. Our talent will at very least be self-sufficient at best over-flowing into free agency.

With one best available player pick, we got Luke Joeckel and multiple picks in return for Eugene Monroe. That wouldn't have happened if we burned cap on a free agent OT or drafted a far less talented offensive tackle to fill a hole as many wanted us to do.

NFL owners locked players out to control salary. To a great extent, they got it. That makes over-spending one of the last things for owners to deal with. That's controlled by self-discipline.

Don't forget that this was done with Gene Smith's scouts still in place. Just imagine what can happen if be gets some of his own guys in here.

Or maybe the scouts are pretty good already and Smith was the main problem.

Either way, win/win.
Good post, Jungle Cat.

TMD/NYC- look at the Red Sox for another FA approach. They learned their lesson in the Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez signings and unloaded them to the Dodgers (thank you, LA). The new GM, Ben Cherington, took a different approach in signing lesser lights to high dollar, short length contracts- Mike Napoli for a year, Steven Drew for a year, etc.

They gave them good money and created hungry players. They've re-signed Napoli for 2 more years (not 7-8) and are talking to Drew and their offer to Jacoby Ellsbury (an aging CF with an injury history, kinda like MJD's situation) was nowhere near what the Yankees gave him (7 years, 153 mill). I don't think you'll see them write 7 year contracts again. They will pay good money but limit their exposure by writing shorter contracts.

Granted MLB is different from the NFL- imagine if there was a hard cap in MLB? The Yankees would be dead and buried. As it is, their profligate spending has gotten them into trouble but what do they do- Ellsbury for $153,000,000. The Mariners signer Cano for $240 mill.

I think I like the RS approach and the Jags, with the hard NFL cap, should consider that- avoid the splashy, expensive, long term FA's and focus on the quality guys- overpay them for 2 years and avoid dead money issues.

That Cano contract is a joke. 240 mil/10 years for a 31 year old? Guess no one learned from the Pujols/Hamilton debacles...
