I wouldn't. They need to find a way to motivate Bortles to improve his mechanics. Money is often the biggest motivation. Per the CBA, they can't "force" him to work on his mechanics in the offseason. They can, however, tell him he should work on his mechancies and then imply they are very unsatisfied with his performance. Examples of implying dissatisfaction:
- This offseason is the first season players drafted in the 2014 draft can negotiate a contract. We could choose to not sign an extension for him until after this season.
- Opt to not pick up the fifth year option on Bortles
- Bring in legitimate competition for the starting role. This could be either through free agency or the draft.
If we don't we better have one heck of a backup plan. I don't wanna end up like the Browns did this year.
Quote:It really stinks that every year for the last decade, we all start talking draft picks in late Nov/early Dec....... So sad....... lol
It's really only been like half a decade, but I get your point.
The motivation issue - if there ever was one - was reportedly what cost Greg Olson his job IIRC. If that is true, motivation should be easy to come by without overpaying him too soon.
Our first round pick for Jimmy G? I'd probably do it. I'm also OK with Mahomes or Watson on Day 2. I just hope that we don't Mitch Trubisky...another flash in the pan QB. We've already been through Gabbert and Bortles so please Jaguars don't take Trubisky.
I think it depends on who the GM is.
If it's still Caldwell (and I think he will stay) then I think they stick with Bortles.
Maybe they'll take a mid-round QB though, to give Bortles more realistic competition.
Quote:I would take Jimmy over every QB in this class and possibly next ( i know its far away). You can go Peppers, take the risk on Fournette or something better at 3 and get Garroppolo with your 2nd (which is close to 1st rounder) and conditional 2018 1st rounder I think. Do whatever you want with Bortles.
Trade a second, fourth and Bortles to NE for Jimmy. Bortles might learn how to throw from Brady.
Quote:Did anybody ever think about the fact that we just drafted a QB this year to be #3 on the roster? Any QB we draft next year would replace Chad Henne while Blake Bortles stays locked in as the starter. Dave Caldwell is not straying from Blake anytime soon.
We can't hire a new coach and tell him he can't decide who the starting QB is.

Same as my previous post. If we want to hire a head coach, we can't tell the prospective head coaches that Dave Caldwell is going to make decisions on who starts or not. No self-respecting head coach would take the job if he couldn't make those decisions.
Trade a second for JimmyG or Cousins. Bortles is a good backup, draft a stud play maker in the first.

I don't think you'll get either one of them for a second round pick. I think it'll take a first round pick for Jimmy G, and much more than that for Cousins.
You guys want to trade our number 3 overall pick to a Sith Lord?
Watson >> Bortles.
We won't do it though.
Quote:I vehemently disagree.
Why's that?
The only thing Bortles is better at than Watson is being durable.

Watson has made a college career of running and throwing short passes. That won't cut it in the NFL. Add in the lapses where he makes bad reads at times and his nagging injuries and I just don't see his upside as any higher than Bortles'.

Dak Prescott and Mariota did the same. Derek Carr played in a short pass heavy offense in college.
So what does Bortles do better than him other than durability.

Bortles has been a 3 year starter in the NFL. Like it or not. I don't see anything about Watson that makes me believe he will ever be a starter in the NFL.
As for the QB's mentioned, I thought Prescott might
eventually be a starter in the NFL, but he would have to drastically change his play, since he can from a very different offensive scheme than most teams run. Admittedly, he surprised me and has been a very good starter right away, albeit behind the best O-Line in the NFL, a solid group of receivers and arguably the best young RB in the NFL.
I saw too saw potential in Mariota and thought he'd be a decent starter. Again, he has turned out to be much better than I thought he would be, but like Prescott, he has one of the best RB's in the NFL, possibly the best young OT tandem in the NFL a solid O-Line and some decent receivers.
Say what you want, but Carr took took more shots down the field than you'd think at Fresno State and many people expected big things from him. He threw a lot in college and showed good accuracy and made solid decisions. Nothing about his success in the NFL has surprised me. I saw him as a very good immediate NFL starter.
I just don't anything about Watson that makes me believe he is anywhere near the level of the QB's mentioned above. I see a guy who lacks composure and bails out way too early by either running the ball or checking down to his nearest receiver, no matter if it will go for a gain or not. To me, that's not NFL potential. You can disagree with me, but that's what I see. If you put him on our team with no running game, a flawed O-Line and receivers who look like they've regressed, it would be a disaster.

Honest question here, have you watched much of Watson? He regularly takes deep shots and has great touch on them. He seems really composed to be, even when playing in huge games. The only thing I don't like about him is his throws are a bit weak this year and he isn't as durable as you would like. Otherwise everything else is there.

I've seen him on 5 occasions this year against Auburn, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Pitt and Wake Forest. Maybe I'm watching different games than you are, but I'm just calling what I saw in those games. I can only make judgments on the games I watched.
