Quote:which people? How many?
Jimmy was a burner. ADrop is a jump ball guy. They are not alike at all
All of the people who said last year Robinson and Hurns are the next Smith and McCardell because they gained over 1,000 yards receiving. Robinson almost never dropped the ball.
Quote:He reminded many people of Jimmy Smith last year.
Uh... WRONG.
I wasn't even a fan of the Jaguars back when Jimmy Smith played, but anyone that knows football can see that Stonehands does not have the same type of game as Jimmy Smith had. Jimmy Smith, if I remember him correctly, was more of a fly route WR. AR15 cannot blow the top of a defense the way Jimmy Smith did. AR15 appears like he's gonna wind up being more of a possession type WR.
The problem with AR15, besides the fact that he cannot catch balls anymore, is that his route running isn't crisp enough to get separation... He's having a disappointing season this year because he has not gotten better. Just like BB6. Both these players took the offseason to get fat, metaphorically speaking. They clearly were not working on thier game.

Nice strawman... NOT!
Name one poster here that was comparing Hurns and Robinson to Smith and McCardell. I was here all last season, I don't remember 1 single member of the Jungle that ever made that comparison. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

I think him and bbint starting believing the ice cream man and his "process" had worked, the Jags were "built" and that somehow they had it made.
Didn't have to work on their skills or craft anymore.
It's bad when you starting thinking that you don't have to do anything anymore.
The NFL will cast you aside.

I was strictly referring to people saying Robinson and Hurns are the next Smith and McCardell for Jacksonville because of their receiving yardage. Not the way they catch balls, but the fact they rarely dropped them.

Actually, I recall several posters comparing the duos.
Quite frankly, it's pretty common on here for people to be on Bortles, and it's deserved because he has made some bone-headed plays, but Robinson just looks bad this season. If I recall correctly, he dropped 2+ passes that hit him in the hands in the last game alone.
Hurns has always been the "dependable" receiver catching passes over the middle at times.
Getting back to Robinson though, there was a time when Jimmy Smith had a case of the "dropsies".

Part of it is deserved, but people are putting too much blame on him. What about all those bad play calls by a guy who is now unemployed? What about the fact that we can't run block, which forces him to throw a lot more than he should have to? And I am still waiting for someone to explain why it is Blake's fault that receivers drop perfect passes.

"Hitting him in the hands" isn't the definition for a drop. Neither of the two plays you are talking about were classified as drops. One he was having to make a sideline dive and the other he was fighting through an elite CB to try to catch the pass on the other side of the CBs body. Yes they both hit his hands and he has the capability of making great catches on both, but they aren't drops.
It's like the distinction between a passed ball and a wild pitch. Plenty of wild pitches are avoided because catchers make great digs out of the dirt, but if they don't make that dig it's a wild pitch credited to the pitcher not the catcher. A passed ball is when it is a routine throw that the catcher misses.
Hurns is the one that is making the routine attempt drops (credited with 6 drops, 2nd worst in the league), Arob is the one on the receiving end of the wild pitches (2 drops, 113th worst). You're trying to say yeah well that pitch was two feet short and three feet wide, but the catcher got a piece of glove on it as he was diving across the zone so it should have been caught.

Even if it is not technically a drop on the stat sheet the pass should have been caught. What made Allen Robinson so great last year was his ability to beat CBs by jumping and fighting for the ball in tight coverage. Every time I saw Marqise Lee drop a ball in single coverage, I thought, "Robinson would have caught that one," because he did catch it so many times last year.
Hurns is a good body catcher. One of my favorite catches he made in his career was during Blake Bortles' first start. Unable to stay upright, Hurns bobbled the ball toward his body as he fell backward to make the catch when he landed on his back. It was a show of great concentration. When you see stuff like that, you should not look at a bobble drop and blame the QB for throwing an errant pass, because the receiver can catch a less-than perfect pass.
Not really worried about Robinson in the long term. He's a good player having a tough season for myriad reasons.
Hurns concerns me much more.

Why are you worried about Hurns? He signed a big contract extension during the offseason based on performance.

Do you think Allen Hurns is having a winning caliber season in 2016?

He is not even being thrown to much this season, which surprises me. I believe the fact that he was a great receiver his first two seasons (along with Allen Robinson) is enough evidence to prove he is a very talented WR because they did not just catch easy passes in space like Marqise Lee does, but actually fight for the ball and use more than their hands to get it. How can you see someone do that for two years if he truly sucks and does not deserve a contract extension?
Hurns had 2 huge drops this year that I believe would have been Jaguar wins had he caught them.

Do you feel that Allen Hurns is doing well enough with the opportunities he has this season?
I realize you were away for the Bills game but he had a huge drop that afternoon. Blake Bortles isn't having the type of season that most envisioned for him but that particular play certainly wasn't Bortles' fault.

That is what I have been saying about drops: If a receiver drops the ball, don't blame the quarterback. It is a mystery why the Allens are dropping so many passes this season. At this point I can only hope they turn back the clock and play like the 2015 version of themselves.
I don't think you can serious judge any TE, WR with BB5 struggling the way he is, why this is even being discussed is beyond me but typical of this MB. Have they dropped balls they should have caught, yes and they dropped balls last year also didn't they? Blake is the problem not the WRs.

But doesn't what you just mentioned justify the concern for some Jaguars fans about Allen Hurns as a player over the long term?

I'm not really worried at WR in general. All it takes is for me to look back at what we had in the Garrard/Gabbert/Henne age to appreciate what we have now. When a quarterback isn't playing well, wide receivers drop balls. The added uncertainty and added element of surprise causes the drops.
But Hurns and ARob have regressed in other areas besides the drops. Boselli was talking Monday about how ARob's having issues beating the jam at the line and his routes aren't as crisp. My guess this has to do with how much damage their bodies are going through catching Bortles' passes this year.
It's like a feedback loop. Bortles' play is causing the WRs to get beat up and regress. And that regression is causing Bortles to regress. And that regression is causing the WRs to drop balls. And that causes Bortles' to lose confidence and the regression continues. And so on....
To me, it's all his mechanics. Bortles accuracy is better with better mechanics. And though some of Bortles' decision making may be questionable, fixing his accuracy would solve a majority of his problems.

I already said it many times including right here on this page:
If a receiver drops the ball, it is not Blake's fault the pass is incomplete. I am right about this until proven wrong.
