Quote:You know as well as I do that most people outside of the midwest don't even know that the Ohio Bobcats exist. They equate Ohio as being Ohio State. As a Bobcat, the pain is real.
Everyone knows Ohio State is the name of the university in Columbus, Ohio that has a football team. So they have no reason to call it Ohio.

Not everyone knows that. I've encountered quite a few people over the years that refer to the Buckeyes as Ohio.
One example:
A few years ago I went to a mid-major Bowl game in Detroit at Ford Field (it used to be called the "Motor City Bowl", but I'm not sure what it's called now).
Anyway, Marshall was in the bowl game vs Ohio Bobcats. I encountered people during the trip that asked me in small conversation where I was going, what I was going to do, etc. When I told them, I got responses such as "Marshall is playing the Buckeyes in a bowl?", and "The Buckeyes are playing in Detroit?".
There are many people that don't realize Ohio University is different than Ohio State. Not everyone in the country follows such things..
Of course, I know Ohio University very well. I've seen them play countless times over the years, and have been to Athens many times for games.
Back when Marshall was much better than now (they're seriously lousy these days though), MU and Ohio played a rivalry for "Battle of the Bell" each season. When Marshall was in the MAC, those schools had some really good games.

It's now called the Quick Lane Bowl. The Lions help sponsor the game, which is between a Big 10 team and an ACC team.
This year, it will be Maryland against Boston College. The crazy part of this is Maryland is the Big Ten team after spending nearly an eternity in ACC.
Jagherd, were these people you encountered college football fans? There is a difference between being a "college football fan" and a fan of a college football team.
It is impossible to know the name of a major university in Columbus, Ohio and truly believe its name is just Ohio because it is Ohio State University.

No, not college football fans that I was aware of. One guy was the border agent between Canada and the U.S.
I was in Canada for a while, and crossing back into the U.S., the agent was asking me why I was there and all that stuff. He was one that said, "Buckeyes are playing in Detroit?".
This is a message board originated by a football team. Of course, most people here are football fans.
But, there are tons of people that aren't fans, and don't pay attention about such things other than in a very casual way.

All of the fans calling the Buckeyes Ohio on this forum know perfectly Ohio State is the school name - and have known that for a long time. They aren't confused like Canadian border officials.
So why are college football fans who actually talk about the Buckeyes calling the school Ohio?

OMG let it go. No one confusing the two schools is disrespecting OSU. They literally do not realize there is a college called Ohio U. We are mid major playing in the MAC. Not everyone follows mid majors.

They probably do know about it because you are here and have an Ohio University avatar.
The whole reason I am asking is I know they aren't confusing the schools. They know the one in Columbus is Ohio State.

Everyone knows the difference between OSU, Ohio U, and Miami (OH)
Nobody gives two flips about Ohio U or Miami (OH)
So they say "Ohio" to reference OSU because it is the only college of relevance.

You would be better off explaining all of this to a turnip.
Ohio sucks. I'll leave it up to you to figure which one I'm referring to.

I will leave it up to you to tell me why you don't say the full name Ohio STATE. Malicious intent is assumed until proven otherwise.
The Ohio State Bobcats are trash

OSU, would that be Oklahoma State University, Oregon State University or Ohio State University?

Speaking of which, do you know why Michigan does not float off into the Great Lakes?
Because Ohio Sucks!
Quote:OSU, would that be Oklahoma State University, Oregon State University or Ohio State University?
Yep, all depends on where you are.
USC - depends on which coast you're on. Trojans or Gamecocks.
Tech - to me was, is, and will always be Virginia Tech.
Deeper south, it's Georgia Tech. Probably other things other places.

South Carolina is USCjr. Southern Cal will always be the real USC.

I like what you did there...
