good point....but I just don't believe TB is "the guy"....sorry

We DO need a qB for sure.

Quote:Why is it so hard for people to understand? Jared Allen was putting up 20+ sacks on the Vikings and the team sucked. The Broncos sucked before Manning when they had Von Miller doing the same. JJ Watt is still a beast and the Texans have 2 wins.

QB>>>>>>DE
I understand what you are saying, and I agree with you, but I also understand where the other party is coming from.

For instance, Colin Kaep. and Joe Flacco went to the superbowl last year. If Teddy Bridgewater doesnt turn out better than them ( and I believe he will ) I would be dissapointed we missed out on Clowney.

Well im not arguing a mediocre QB vs Clowney. Teddy especially but also Mariota can be franchise QBs. I would take Clowney over the Andy Daltons and Matt Schaubs of the world any day.

So Teddy isnt the guy, but someone available at 33 will be?
It is easy to say the qb is the answer.   Real easy.   Hi says Cam Newton.   Hi says Michael Vick.   Hi says Matt Stafford.   Hi says Marino.  and the list goes on and on.    Bottom line look at our sack total what the last 5 years?    The qb pressures?    The qb hurries?    We have been dead last not even close.   A game manager qb can win too.   But anyone who thinks winning playoff games let alone the super bowl with no pass rusher on the team.   Is sadly mistaken.   I am sorry I would not pass on Reggie White or Lawrence taylor for Aikman or Kelly or Elway.

Is manning great yes.   Would he be super bowl caliber on our team always in a shootout with no pass rush what so ever.   Nope wouldnt even make playoffs.  Same with Brady.

If you take position out of play.  And base purely on performance all through college alone.   Bridgewater is not even close to the talent Clowney is.

Well.....I think you guys are changing my mind. Right now, in my mind I have Manziel and Bridgewater neck and neck. We got our LT last year. Boselli thinks he has a good chance to be elite. We need a QB and a DE. We haven't had an elite DE since Brackens. Of course, we haven't had an elite quarterback since when Brunell was healthy. My question is......Who is the closest to a sure thing between a quarterback and a pass rusher? Don't forget Barr either. His stock is rising rapidly. After reading many of the posts on this thread, I am changing my mind on my Bridgewater/Manziel hopes. I think the quarterbacks in this draft have not separated themselves enough. There's no Andrew Luck this year that stands out from the rest. If there was.....I'd say get him. I'm changing my vote to Clowney. Now, if a Manziel or Mariota falls like Geno did last year.....then we get him. Maybe we'll luck out. If he sucks like Gabbert, and we have another bad season, plan B might be Winston next year. That would potentially give us elite players at the 3 premium positions. Okay. I'm a Clowney guy now......but I reserve the right to reevaluate after the Combine.
Much easier to get a pass rusher in the later rounds, you simply aren't going to get a franchise QB later on.  Sure, there are exceptions - but playing the odds means taking a QB first and then the LEO later.

......we've been trying that since Brackens.....
So all we need is a DE that can hold offenses to 10 points every game so our second round SCRUB QB can get scobee in fg range at least 4 times to win...

OR

We can get a smart, capable, possibly elite QB that can stop the other offense through TOP as well as putting up 30 a game....

QB> DE and its not even close....

True - but just like almost all of Shack and Gene's picks - we whiffed repeatedly.
There's only one way to pick. Select the best possible player you can, each and every time you pick.

Why take a less talented football player to fill a so called need when you can have the absolute best football player you can get period?
QB is the top priority.  You have to draft one as I don't know that there are any veterans that would fit the bill.  Draft one in the first and then two more later on for all I care.  Just get a quarterback and the rest will follow.  Two years ago we had a top ten defense and the leading rusher in the NFL.  We were terrible.  Why?  Elaine Gabbert was playing his typical NFL worst style of QB.  Get a QB.  Get a winning team.

I would agree with you if one of the quarterbacks had separated himself from others in the draft. There are many coming with supposedly high talent. I can't predict the SCRUBS and neither can you. However, Caldwell had one of the best drafting records in the NFL as Director of College scouting. HIM I TRUST. If he drafts a quarterback first.....I'm fine with that. If he drafts Clowney or maybe even Barr and trades up out of the 2nd round to grab a QB who he covets that is falling.....I'm fine with that. QBs fall all the time. I don't see any teams in the bottom half of the upcoming draft that is likely to draft one. So once a Manziel or Mariota start falling.....they fall to us....or we trade up a little to keep someone else from trading ahead of us to steal our pick. Savvy?

I know you arent arguing for a mediocre QB, but we arent talking about a mediocre QB. We are talking about a Qb that isnt even a rookie yet. If Bridgewater was guaranteed to be a franchise QB,of course you draft him first.

But if Clowney is far and away the better player, you dont pick Bridgewater just because he is a QB.

Thank you Joe
That's just it....its just as likely for a DE to bust as a QB....but the reward is much greater if the QB hits.

Harvey anyone?

Now you're comparing Harvey to Clowney? Smh

The two aren't even close
Why does everyone only mention TB?  There are a few solid QB's coming out of this years draft.

I don't think anyone has said we don't need a QB. Just that Clowney has more talent than TB.
