Quote:Did anyone in here expect instant results? Rarely happens and we didn't hit that LOTTO. Caldwell and Bradley are attempting a build very similar to Seattle (pretty obvious) and that takes time.

What I see is that Caldwell is following the Gene Smith blueprint almost exactly. Our only hope is that Dave's picks are better than Gene's, and so far I see no evidence that that is true.

Quote:You have a valid opinion, of course. Everything you say here makes sense. The only problem is that you don't seem to be considering how drastically they gutted the roster and what they had to work with once that happened. They sent 41 guys packing that spent at least 4 games on the active 53 last season. That's a pretty radical re-boot.

Don't confuse some poster's patience as defense.

I'll say this - If Caldwell/Bradley can't have this squad winning around 6 games next year while looking competitive in most losses - I'll be right on board with you. I just seriously think it's too soon to know.
I'm with you on that. I'm chilling with the critism this year because of the new hires in the front office and coaching staff, but we have to be significantly better next year. I'll admit my frustration came early in the year when we were getting killed every game and I just watched this show the season before. Now it's even worse than that. Now I'm over this year looking forward to the offseason and waiting on the moves that will be made.

GM's are judged by their quarterbacks. Gene Smith's quarterbacks were Chad Henne, Luke McCown and Blaine Gabbert. Caldwell did the smart thing and didn't pick EJ Manuel, Geno Smith or Matt Barkley in arguably the worst QB class in recent memory. Whichever QB he takes next spring will shape his legacy.
Quote:That's the problem we didn't resign the few that would or could and brought in guys that wouldn't.

Yes. The problem is we didn't re-sign enough Gene Smith draft picks that were on a terrible defense from a 2-14 team.

Bridgewater, Mariota, or Manziel. Still sort of like the idea of trading down for Matthews, getting Manziel at the top of the 2nd, then being referred to as the Jaggies

What is so hard to understand about this? Can you make a diamond ring from poop? We're poop. Our talent is poop. Our skill level is poop. What do you want him/them to do? Magically make the players better just by coaching? Seriously? Coaching only goes so far. It depends on the player to go out there and do it effectively. I'm not surprised about our start so far, nor am I upset about the approach they are taking. Do you seriously think we were going to play anywhere near the level of Kansas City (8-0), Seattle (7-1), Indianapolis (5-2), San Francisco (6-2 and Super Bowl runner-up), San Diego (4-3 and a very good offense)? St. Louis and Oakland would be the only one's that were possible, but even they are way more talented than us. I agree with what they are doing so far and agree with staying the course. This is a new "rebuild". The last few years cannot be combined in this "rebuild". They were not "rebuilds". This is.

Go Jags

Oh yea, and Denver (7-1) yea...........

lame, that reasoning has been blown to pieces, a teams record is not indication of an individual players ability to play.
Quote:Keep on clinging.

Keep denying, this first offseason has been a bust.

hoping next years offseason is much different.

And a solid defense from a 5-11 team the previous year.

Coaching changes, Daryl Smith's injury, and Knighton's inability to practice because of his eye had a lot to do with the dropoff. Assuming Gus' defensive coaching staff is an improvement, none of those would have continued to be factors this year.

GM's are judged by the production of the team they assemble. AT this point we'll get the pick of the QB class but it won't do much good if the rest of the team is a bunch of duds.

Picking this high in the next draft getting the QB should be a guarantee, Davids real ability to build a roster will show itself at almost every other position.

I wonder how much coaching factors into how good a QB turns out. Would Aaron Rodgers have turned out as good if he were drafted by a bottom-feeder and thrown into the mix in his rookie year? Was Gabbert ruined by that, or would he have sucked no matter what?

Quote:Yeah, it shows.....the results are astounding....
Yet, if they had won a game or two, you would be calling them equally inept for winning a couple of games which in your eyes are meaningless.

So, either way, the Jags let you down. They simply can't win with you. By your own admission now, winning is a bad thing, and now losing is also a bad thing.

Why don't you just come out and say what you're dying to say. What's stopping you?

The thing is that this offseason was more or less intended to be a bust.

It was a tactical move by Dave knowing full well that adding higher priced talent through free agency was going to make this a 5-6 win team with significant money tied up in players that won't be around when we're actually competing for a championship. He purposely brought in younger, lower priced talent to see if they could be building blocks for this team going forward.

I'm guessing he wasn't expecting this level of ineptitude from the team, but in all honesty I think he'd gladly take it as long as the young guys were consistently improving throughout the season. His model wasn't to build the team to be a true competitor in the first year or two because that means you're overpaying and overvaluing players for the near future and forgoing the longterm. That method has generally been proven to be the wrong approach, i.e. 2011-2012 Jacksonville Jaguars free agent classes. He burned everything to the ground to build it back up again, not rebuild on the same faulty foundation that Gene Smith attempted to build on and failed.

This team isn't being built to be a flash in the pan, but rather for long term and sustained success. Unfortunately that requires patience and acceptance of some poor play in the early stages, but that shouldn't be too unexpected considering how miserable our two prior GMs failed over the past decade.
Quote:This,

The Jaguars have too many incompetent players on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, they don't play good because they're bad, bad players play bad, it's not that difficult to understand.

And when a bad player is playing as well as he can kicking him up the backside about it won't make him play better

he is more likely to let his head drop get nervous and regress
Quote:And a solid defense from a 5-11 team the previous year.

A "solid defense" that got embarrased on national TV by Matt Ryan and Phillip Rivers.

I'm really certain now you don't understand what it means to truly rebuild a team.  You're so brainwashed into believing that rebuilding requires you to hang on to marginal talent in the hopes of having 1 or 2 wins as opposed to blowing it up completely and really moving in a different direction.

I'm not in denial.  I'm fully capable of recognizing what the front office is doing, and after looking at the last 2 seasons with that talent you continue to opine losing, we were only able to cobble together 7 wins.  So what if we're worse this year?  This rebuilding process isn't ABOUT this year.  It's about the long term success of this franchise.  Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to leap forward.  Hanging onto the past does nothing to help this effort, but you feel free to stick to 2012 if it keeps you warm at night.
Quote:lame, that reasoning has been blown to pieces, a teams record is not indication of an individual players ability to play.

It hasn't been "blown to pieces" at all. You are clinging to this notion that Caldwell didn't re-sign enough Gene Smith players. Caldwell was hired to clean up the disaster left by Gene Smith and you're upset he didn't bring back more of his players?
If we're able to balance the draft with a few key players in free agency I think we'll be successful.  We just can't be dirt cheap in free agency.  Let's get a couple of decent players that can lead this team.

.... hey, now that Geno Atkins only has 1 leg, maybe we can get him on the cheap :teehee:

I don't think this will be the case, if the Jaguars deem a player as a long term solution at a postion of need (a pass rusher) I think they'll pony up the cash. There's a good chance Michael Johnson & Greg Hardy make it to FA becasue both the Bengals & Panthers have a lot of money already invested in Carlos Dunlap, Charles Johnson etc..

If they get Bridgewater = next season will be 7-9 minimum.

If they get Mariothelete then = disaster next season, minimum.
