Looking at that list, four of those players were selected in the Third Round or higher. Talk about hitting on your draft picks and making them count!
Drafting any OL in the first 3 rounds.

What if he drafts an OG in round 3?  Will you think Caldwell is screwing up?
If his draft picks stink.

Quote:All I said was it was ironic. Nothing more, nothing less. If I am being honest, I think Tomlin is supremely overrated. Which sounds silly for a guy that won a Super Bowl and played for another. But he was handed a talented roster and arguably the best defensive coordinator the league has seen. What players have improved under his watch? He's basically Jack Del Rio with a great QB.

You nailed what I was thinking. He took over Cowher's team and was successful/lucky (there's always some luck involved) with it but has brought  it to its current winless state. It is somewhat analogous to Gruden taking over what Tony Dungy built in TB and then winning with it...what happened after that?

As to Coughlin, isn't he almost 70? It's over. (Plus I couldn't see he and David working together, the David-Gus connection is working well).

Lol at Saban.

I agree with Frailboner for the first time, this thread is pretty stupid and way premature IMO. Let the DC and GB show play out for their 4 years, I for one am enjoying the ride...just get rid of Gabbert.
This may seem counterintuitive, but for the most part Caldwell's future is out of his hands.  The consensus is that Teddy Bridgewater is the best QB prospect in this draft.  Maybe a guy like Hundley blows up the rest of the year and threatens that honor, but for the most part Teddy is the guy.  Odds are we'll pick first next year.  Which means Teddy is our guy.  Its the smart and obvious pick.  And like any other GM, Caldwell's future is tied to how well his first round QB is.  If Teddy turns out to be a bust, Caldwell is the one who takes the hit at really no fault of his own.  The smart obvious choices dont always work out.  But nobody remembers or cares.  Its all about results.  Now if Teddy turns into a bust and Caldwell is able to build a strong enough roster around him to keep us competitive, then that could save him.  But thats a difficult feat.  To build a defense and a running game strong enough to overcome poor QB play.  If Caldwell can do that, then you'd have to tip your cap to him.

Now maybe Caldwell throws us for a curveball and decides he likes Hundley or some other QB better.  And then obviously his future would be directly in his hands.

For Caldwell to build a great roster, we need to hit with our first pick next year.  Let's call him Teddy.  Teddy needs to become a strength of the team, not a liability like our QBs are now.

Also, for any GM to separate a decent team to a good team, you have to get lucky sometimes.  I mean drafting a pro-bowler in the 3rd round or later.  Like I said, noone thinks a probowler will be there in the 3rd round (otherwise they would have been picked long ago), but sometimes you can get lucky and get a guy that just develops.  If we do that, we will be golden.

Put it this way, the Colts drafting Payton Manning made up for a lot of other really bad draft picks for a long time in Indy.

Say the Jaguars get the first pick in a year considered to be among the best in recent history for quarterbacks. Does that make Caldwell's roster purge and piece mealing a roster look like a genius move?

0-7 = warning sign that our GM is horrible. We will see
Trading a Top 10 OT for a 4th and a 5th was definitely a warning sign. Letting all of our decent defensive players walk in free agency was another.

I've been happy with our drafting so far, though. That's what is most important. As long as we maximize what we get out of the draft, I'll be happy with Caldwell.

I coulda swore we only played 6 games so far this season.

The record should have no tie to Caldwell at all. This is not his product. He can only do so much in one offseason.
