You can fill several holes on both sides if you cut Poz, Lewis, and Mincey. Poz is an "ok" player, but nothing special and not worth the salary. You can easily get 2 solid starting LBers in FA for what we pay him.

Lewis is probably the most overpaid player in the NFL if you compare salary to production. No way does he stick around in 2014. Cut him and upgrade the position at half the cost.

Mincey either takes a paycut down to $1.5 M or he's cut and likely out of the NFL. What a shame that Gene gave him that huge signing bonus.

Babin and MJD will walk in free agency. No need to re-sign either one.

Branch probably doesn't make the cut either, so you end up needing to replace Branch, Mincey, and Babin - going to be a tough offseason in 2014.
Quote:have you seen our offense? :whistling:

Yes, but I've also seen Marcedes play of recent years...

maybe ever.

Quote:No no no, you see....you cut these guys and then go and sign guys like, Greg Hardy, Michael Johnson, Alex Mack, Jon Asamoah, Brian Cushing, Sean Lee, Brian Orakpo, Brandon Browner, or Jarius Byrd. Better players on better contracts. You could get 2 or 3 of these guys on better contracts

Cushing? Orakpo? in your dreams

Why? Its not like we wont have the cap space when these guys get cut and If we get Teddy or Clowney and another one of the top QBs in the draft class alot more players would want to come to Jax. Nobody wants to come to Jax when Gabbert is the QB.

our offensive scheme made him what he is and has been above average. hes overpaid yes but he has 4-5 years of steady production left and he should be willing to renegotiate his contract if we ever need any wiggle room to sign any big FA.

It's going to take a lot more than a rookie QB to convince players to come here (outside of overpaying them).

Especially when you consider that Free Agency is a race to overpay good-great players.

All players are overpaid these days but I would rather overpay players that are producing at more important positions than players who are not, at less important positions.
Lewis - Basically plays TE/OT for this team his receiving production does need to step up but that has been partly due to the QB play also and there's no one on the roster right now to replace him so he stays

Mincey - Will have to take a pay cut to stay on this team and is getting older

Babin - Same as Mincey but I see both gone next season. Branch or draft pick could replace him

Poz - Needs to take a pay cut as he's getting older with some injury history. Reynolds or draft pick likely to replace need better coverage from this postion

Drew - He's getting back to normal would like to see how season plays out with oline improvement I know he still has IT.

Henne - Would like to see him traded if possible (not likely) will be released next year

Gabbert - Need to see if his play style changes and he steps up or will be replaced next year in draft

Rackley - Getting healthy now would like to see his play improve as he gets bull rushed to easy right now could be injury, has shown improvement as year goes as seen in rookie year

Meester - Very old will be replaced next year but I hope he can finish strong with the oline improving as a whole

Uche - Has not played as bad as it seems and is dealing with a knee injury he stays if play improves

Lowery - Depends how well Josh plays in his place would like him back though if the rookie dosent take his spot

Reisner - seems to have been replaced with 2 new athletic TEs prolly wont see him around next year

Forsett - Haven't seen him play here so idk how u can justify releasing him

Branch - Has gotten a lot more snaps recently seems to be improving he stays to compete for next year

Quote:It's easier to choose who to keep. Shorter list, probably.

2013 draft class, Shorts, Blackmon (this team's worth the suspension risk), Poz (he's all we've got even though he's probably a two down MLB now), Marks.

There are very few who are irreplaceable.

I'd add Monroe and Lowery, although I believe Monroe will be gone next year.

If this team wants to be competitive it is going to have to spend big money in FA. The idea is to build through the draft and add good FA in the process. This team needs a dramatic change.

Khan can't preach (I'm paraphrasing here) "Changing the Culture of this team." while in the same token keep putting this pathetic team on the field.

The idea is to put a team on the field that is entertaining to watch and keep the fans coming back. Selling tickets is not an issue now but your average fan will get tired of paying good money to see their team get destoryed every week in their own house.

Year 1 of the rebuild is about weeding out the bad players and finding a core of players to build this team around. Lets see if year 2 brings improvement.

Cut them all and the ones that don't bleed out... keep them...

Do you really think those guys are going to walk away from their current teams?

We have enough cap space to keep all those guys (Poz, Lewis, Mincey) and still fill some holes via free agency. In my opinion, you keep Poz and Lowery but cut the others. That will leave more than enough room to sign free agents.

Some players contracts are running out so ill include them if I dont think we should resign them too.

Babin

Mincey

Poz

MJD

Rackley

Meester

Will Tofu

Branch

Gabbert

Henne

Marcedes WILL be back despite what some idiots may say. Get a real QB in here and he will contribute enough to justify keeping him.

All these bums on our team getting paid more then a lot of other players in the league and DON'T produce or even play most of the time. Gabbert, Lewis, MJD, Meester, Rackley, Nwaneri, Branch, Alualu, Mincey, the others get a pass because they're either rookies or aren't usually starting. There's no reason why any competence in these player's positions shouldn't be producing results with Shorts and Blackmon coming back. 0-3 or 0-15 these guys will be playing for their job.

This is the type of posts I like to log on and read. Kudos to the OP for some insightful information that I would have never thought of.

Now to the list. I agree that Lewis is very average, but his blocking ability will only help out run game and he is not bad in the redzone. I would keep him around for another year and see how it plays out. We are #2 overall in cap space, so it would be ok with me.

Poz, I say keep him too. He is leading the NFL in tackles. So he helps sure up the run defense in the middle. Is he worth 19 mil over the next 2,,,,,absolutely not. Can we afford cutting one of our best players.....without money in the equation? No, imo

Mincey - get him outta here. I ranted on him last season about how is production is ambysmal (spelling)

Meester is going to retire, so theres nothing here to see. He just padded his retirement by coming back this year.

Rackley - he can't block and toilet seat

Nwaneri - Meh, depth maybe.??? Im not sure what his cap space to the team is, but I would probably keep him around.

Lowery - I've been saying since the beginning that he is below average. He is worse than Dawan Landry to me.

poz is slipping.

also, we don't need to cut MJD, its his final year.

Everybody besides Monroe
Quote:Who do you think will get cut at the end of the year because of bad contracts Gene handed, age, or just haven't lived up to expectations?

1. Mercedes Lewis- His base salary jumps from 4.2 mil to 6.7 mil for the next 2 years and he def. isn't worth almost 7 million a year in base salary, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, and Vernon Davis isn't even making the 8.25 mil cap hit that Lewis would make if we kept him. Rediculous amount of money for Lewis who isn't even that much of a receiving threat. It will cost us only 2.8 mil cap hit in dead money over the next 2 years to cut him. It would be well worth the 2.8 mil cap wit than paying him 16.5 mil over the next couple years.

2. Jeremy Mincey- Same with Lewis his salary jumps from 1.5 mil to 4.5 mil next year. He will cost us 4 mil. cap hit over the next 2 years in dead money or if we keep him it will be 13.5 mil cap hit over the next 2 years. He hasnt played that great either I say he needs to go also.

3. Jason Babin- Babin cap hit goes up from 4.3 mil to 6.1 mil next year. If Babin is cut at the end of the year it will cost us nothing in dead money. Babin is our best DE but he will be 34 and he isnt worth 6 mil a year at this point in his career.

4. Paul Posluszny- Poz has played pretty good for us but next year and 2015 his cap hit goes up to 9.5 mil. If we cut him we would only have 4 mil. in dead money over the next 2 yrs. Is a MLB really worth 19 mil. over the next 2 years? Poz isn't

So if you break it down, you cut these 4 guys at the end of the year it takes 28.5 mil off of our cap space and only 5.4 of that would be dead money in 2014. 2015 would be close to the same because they are all signed though 2015 and salaries and dead money would be close the the same.

I would of put Alu on the list but the way his contract is it would almost be better to keep him next year and cut him in 2015.

Any other players you guys think should be cut at the end of the year?

Thoughts?

Seems legit to me. Add in Prosinski for general principle along with Gabbert and Henne. I might would want to keep Poz around though. I know he will cost alot but with the savings elsewhere we could afford to keep a above average MLB. Would rather only have to address the OLB spots in the draft / FA.
