Quote:Absolutely correct.
The combine helps with QBs too. I agree with you that game tape/on field game performance is/should be the most important criteria. GMs and scouts become risk averse in the offseason. That's why there is such an emphasis on the measurables, and guys like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson fall.
That is also the reason why scrubs like Gabbert, Gholston get picked high and end up costing their respective teams years of horrible play, and skipping on certain players (Wilson in the 3rd).

Also correct.

exactly, the point is the combine is important for gms/coaches/scouts during the draft process, even though they have both good and bad results.
It goes without saying that the combine is important for weigh-ins and measurements, but I think we can already guess that Manziel won't be 6'1''. His supporters don't care, either.
Quote:has more to do with the "name" being a relation to a scrub i.e. bloodlines,...
If you are going to claim I said something, at least tell the whole story, not pieces of it just so you fan further your agenda
You do understand there are limits to this, right?
Was Steve McNair not draft worthy since his brother Fred played QB in college and went undrafted?
Was Anthony Dorsett draft worthy because his father as HOF RB TOny Dorsett?
I kinda get the apprehension, but know you are opening yourself up to get hammered on this point, no matter how much you explain it.

I only wish the combine was for one thing and one thing only. For physicals. I mean it is cool to see those guys run sub 4.4 and put up 225 40 times, but to me one performance without pads doesn't really do anything for me when it comes to draft stock.
Now if a DB or WR comes out and runs a 5.4, 40 then yeah draft stock might plummet. I remember Damontre Moore only putting up 225 10 times or something like that and that probably hurt his draft stock. I remember him being mentioned as a top 5 pick at one point.

I honestly wouldn't care anything about his height if I viewed him as a guy with everything else needed to be a NFL QB and not a project. People try to lump him in with Brees & Wilson when that's not who he is, coming out they were both guys with NFL skillsets that just got the short end of the stick genetically.
The only team that should care about the bloodline (re: Carr) is Houston. Imagine them trying to market the poor kid to their fanbase.
Interviews had a lot more to do to boost Gabbert/Locker/Ponder than underwear workouts.
Combine should be physicals and interviews only but you can't deny that how a prospect performs is an indicator of the player work ethic.
Some results are useful though, especially for defenders and receivers (3 cones, 10 yards split, broad and vertical jump, shuttle run), they at least make you go back to the film.

it would be funny if they draft him #1 overall.

"Hey tinhorns fans! Remember our last first round QB...well we got his little brother!"
Some interesting stats I found on Carr: It's been almost 2 months since he's thrown an INT.
He's never thrown for double digit INTs in a season.
Has completed at least 60% of his passes through every game this season.
Is a direct descendent of super soaker inventor....just kidding but how cool would that be?

I don't buy the bloodline thing but I m willing to say that Houston could not (and would not) draft Carr because of his brother. It has nothing to do with his ability and everything to do with creating an unnecessary distraction.
There are over 200 picks in the NFL draft. As easy as you can name a handful of guys that increased their stock at the combine but flopped, I can name guys that increased their stock at the combine and panned out. I can also name guys that were considered 1st/2nd round picks before the combine, hurt their stock at the combine, and then never amounted to anything.
You can't just point to certain cases and say "see, the combine is pointless". There are many times where the combine gives false-positives and false-negatives, but there are also many times that the combine gives true-positives and true-negatives.

It would be like us taking Tyler Gabbert

I am not a big Fales fan at all. I have seen a few of his games from last year and this year and I think he is just mediocre.

he played great last year but took a huge step back this year, i would be happy with him in the 5th and beyond, i see alex smith/chad pennington in him.
Let's go Fresno! Need that bcs birth!
What if we drafted Carr and Devate Parker. Carr to Parker lol.
