A new water heater. Ours is over 20 years old and still working but once a year it likes to give us cause for concern. Winter is coming and I need hot water. Well water is frigid in the winter months without that heater.

What would your plans be with the other $996,000 left over?

$4,000 for a water heater? That's a little expensive, isn't it?
Yea I replaced my hot water heater for about $300 super easy to install as well.

With the money I would do a full re-pipe with all new plumbing.

Okay, that makes sense.

Buy some land in the mountains and build a cabin. I guess I could hire you to install the water heater there, too. :-) Buy a Jeep Wrangler to get around in.
A million doesn't buy what it used to.

If it buys me some land, materials to build a cabin, and a Wrangler, that's all I need. We wouldn't have to pay someone to build it, we both have construction backgrounds specific to building houses, he knows how to wire a house and we have family who would help with a few things to make sure we're up to code. Money goes a lot farther if you can do stuff yourself, that's for sure.

Hopefully not the part that's on fire.

That's where you get the best deal on the land.

Hahaha. No, the area we want to be in is not close to the fires. We want to be north of there.
Would spend at least the next 4 years focused on my schooling and then travelling during the summer.

Sounds like a plan, but what are you doing to achieve that million dollars? I ask because that was asked of me back when I was 24 years old after I mentioned what I would do if I had a million dollars. It occurred to me, I wasn't doing a damn thing.

I had a dream and a plan once with my ex-husband that included this scenario. Then he cheated on me and some pretty nasty stuff went down and I ended up in a psych hospital for attempted suicide a time or two. That's one reason I left the board back in '07 or '08. I have recovered from it all for the most part, but I am not the same person I was. When your dreams are snuffed out as harshly and as mentally violent as mine were you don't ever think about that dream again. I can answer the question, no problem, but that dream is no longer a goal and I'm okay with that.
I feel ya Americus...I was in a similar situation not too long ago.  I was about half way towards my monetary goal with about 20 years left to work.  I was easily going to reach that goal.  Now I'm only a quarter of the way towards that goal...and it isn't looking too good now.

I'm sorry to hear that, man. It sucks when you're blindsided by people closest to you. I don't have any goals like that anymore. I just appreciate my husband and am thankful for my life. 9 years ago I was trying my best to end it all. Now I'm glad it didn't work out that way.
I'm pretty much over it...I've just had to come to the realization that I'll probably have to work until the day that I die.

Land - like 5 acres 50k?

I would give some to the church

Keep working, and randomly give some to different people that needed it.
