Am I the only one who was disappointed when Marqise didn't get into the endzone on his long catch? Instead of celebrating an awesome play, I just turned to my wife and said "oh great, we will screw this up. 3 points here if we are lucky."
Refs have been screwing us all year. no surprise there. I also think Marquise Lee may have scored. I know Blake got that forward progress. and ARob just doesn't care anymore cause the DB is always holding his arms down and no call.

Yep. The fact that all scoring plays are reviewed would make you think it makes for sense to rule the TD instead of the fumble.

I was in the exact same state of mind so you are not alone here.

You probably say the same thing after every big play.
It was always my understanding that, when the called is made or moments before, if the call is somewhat vague then it should be ruled in favor of the team already in possession of the ball.
The ball follows the hand across the goal line and doesn't seem to deviate from the same trajectory or move until after crossing it. This is why ratings are down. There's no consequences for missing the call, and the NFL has shown a consistent pattern favoring the better teams.

Good post. I agree.
Look this in the grand scheme of this play doesn't matter. We need to do better than requiring a Referee to give us a TD. Honestly, I don't care if the call is wrong because this team needs to play to the point where a few bad calls (like we see all the time) don't decide the game.
Quote:That was a touchdown. No way spin it. They got it wrong.
Agreed. Right when the tip of that ball crossed the white line = TD. He was a whole football length beyond the white line before it came loose.

If it was initially ruled a TD they would have reviewed it, so in those terms it makes no difference. Why would officials be told to call it a fumble? Their job is to call it the way they see it.

and im almost 100% sure knees were down prior to it coming out...... doesn't matter, we had chances to win after that too and didnt execute.

hes saying its ingrained in them to call fumble.

His knees were never a question. Only his toes touched the ground. It was all about where the ball came out.
Execution was bad in other parts of the game, but not on that play.

I actually agree with erring on the side of the turnover when it is this close. We all remember how often a team would scoop up a fumble and get a nice return that would get cancelled because they blew the play dead. It's much easier to go review the play after the fact and see if there was control or not. A play that just happens to be blocked by all angles like this one is rare and unfortunate, but better than the alternative.

Plays that are blocked from all angles happen a lot. You just explained why officials should err on the side of TDs, not turnovers, with your whistle comment.

I would agree if it were an isolated incident. But this referee tomfoolery has been going on all season. It's to the point now where the refs are constantly deciding the outcomes of games.
Instant replay ruined football. Yeah I said it.

That was obviously true in the Green Bay game and it was again at Kansas City. Other games around the NFL have also been decided by bad calls and non-calls. It has been that way for years, but for some reason penalties have gone way up in 2016.

They are told, and have been for a few years now, that if they're not absolutely sure in such cases where a ball may have been fumbled, to go ahead and rule it a fumble in order for it to be reviewed. As I said, and as someone else pointed out, scoring plays get reviewed too so they could have easily ruled it a TD and got the review as well. But I suspect this practice has become so normal to them, that he didn't even think about the second part regarding the score as things happen so fast. In other words, it's now instinct to call "fumble" if it might have been one.
