(10-21-2018, 09:02 PM)jagibelieve Wrote: [ -> ]From listening to the coach's presser, I don't think that the "Kessler era has begun" by any means.  He (the coach) was pretty much putting ALL players on notice, particularly the offense.  It's all about protecting the football.  I would be pretty surprised if Bortles doesn't start next week.  I also wouldn't be surprised to see Cole lose some snaps with the couple of key drops that he had in the 1st half (coach Marrone was pretty upset with pass drops in his presser).

For those that love to hate on Moncrief.  He was our leading receiver today and caught 7 of 10 passes for 76 yards.  Keelan Cole caught 2 of 7 for 21 yards with at least 2 (possibly 3) dropped passes that should have been caught.  Those dropped passes could have possibly changed the momentum of the game.

Bortles was pretty much a scapegoat today with his benching, and hopefully it sends a message to the rest of the team.  Nobody is "safe" or beyond getting benched.

Two of Cole's drops were on 3rd down which ended the second and third drive of the game. Costly mistakes early can change the whole composure of a game.

Even though I though Bortles was fairly accurate today, I can't say he was a scapegoat. He was responsible for the two biggest mistakes of the game at the time of his benching.

True.  Perhaps "scapegoat" isn't the proper word for it.  "Made an example of" would be a better term.  It seems that the "theme" this week was not turning the ball over and he did just that by fumbling twice which got him benched.

Either way he is still the starting QB this next week.
Kessler isn’t going to save anything. The problem is that our front office thought we were set and didn’t get enough depth to fight off these injuries and decided to go with Blake again rather than truly upgrade the position. Blake’s not a bad guy. He’s just not dependable to make the plays needed consistently when we need it. He’s gotta go along with Hackett. We’re back to square 1 on offense again.... sucks...

Yeah, he will probably start. This benching was most likely done to send him a message.

The last time he was given this message he responded with good play.

If he doesn't show up in London, my guess would be he'll get benched indefinitely.
Nobody wants to admit they WASTED the #3 overall pick. The Jags mistake was not drafting, signing, or trading for a QB when they had the chance.
In my opinion Kessler did what Bortles couldn’t today...which was take a 3 step drop and get the ball out and be accurate. He sparked our offense with a TD drive.

If Kessler would have started we probably win this game.

Or....the Texans prepare for Kessler and you see their D play up to the line of scrimmage to stop all those dink and dunk plays. It’s easy to have success when the opposition hasn’t prepared for the backup. But when they do it usually ends ugly. Fitz “magic” lasted 3 whole games before crashing back down to earth.
I finally got a chance to watch the game and two things became apparent:
1) Even taking the two fumbles into consideration, there was no compelling reason to pull Bortles.
2) Cody Kessler is not the future QB of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The sloppy play by both QBs and our subsequent loss can primarily be placed on the shoulders of the porous O line, and secondarily on the stone hands of our receivers.
My prediction: BB starts in London and this team will continue to struggle as long as the O line plays like they should be token activated in a subway station. And for god's sake, Keenan McCardell, teach your squad how to catch a ball.
There is no Kessler era. He should start the rest of the season to give us a fighting chance, but given Bortles' contract, I just can't see them paying him all that money, just to ride the bench. I hope I'm wrong, but I believe Bortle's returns to the starting lineup next week. We should definitely use a high draft pick on a QB though.
I was just looking at the sideline and general response of the team. There was a sense of urgency and actually some momentum on our side for a change. Dropped balls really cost us today. If not for the Yeldon one we could have actually had a shot to win the game down just 6. Do you think that would have ever been a reality with Bortles in there? Heck no.

I say he at least starts in London with Carlos Hyde. We can re-evaluate during the bye week. At least shoot for a fighting chance. We've reverted to the 2016 Jaguars real quick.. stacking these kinds of performances together is going to put us back in the basement of the league not even half a season after almost going to the Super Bowl.
BB5 will start next week.

Yep, you should love him.  He is a Teddy clone with a slight stronger arm and quicker release

Be sure to bump this in a few weeks when the "Kessler era" ends
Maybe Buffalo would be willing to let go of Nathan Peterman.

If Doug sticks with Bortles as his starter I predict Doug and Dave will be fired at season end. Maybe that would be what's best.
The whole NFL is laughing at us because they think we're the only ones who don't see Bortles is terrible. Like how many more wind-up passes and fumbles we need to watch.
