They may intend to just keep an extra TE for that purpose in a hybrid role.
I've seen UDFA TE Carson Meier getting some hype as he played some FB/H-back at Oklahoma.

I'm not so sure about Meier. His highlights left much to be desired.

#45 seals off lots of lanes for RBs and also makes some good catches

WR- I think Walker makes the team over Cole.

QB- I believe we keep 3 QB's. I think McGough will be the backup and Minshew will be the #3 for at least the beginning of the season. I think he's not experienced enough to be the backup, but the team thinks too much of him to put him on the P.S.

I'd agree with Meier as the 4th TE / H-Back at this point. Never been impressed with Koyack really.
Meier hadn't been invited yet when I posted this thread.
Regarding the 4th RB, depth DT, and the final safety spot:
I think all of those spots are absolutely up for grabs by the best camp performers. Your suggestions are as good as any in my mind.
Walker over Cole I'm more skeptical about - but his return skills could make it happen.

I'd forgotten about Giles-Harris. He's got a great chance to not only make the team, but contribute early.
He was being talked about as a day 2 pick in some places. A classic MLB, and an intelligent, hard-hitting player.
Here's a pre-draft write-up on him from tdn.com:
"
JOE GILES-HARRIS, LB, DUKE
I am not crazy about the 2019 crop of linebackers but Giles-Harris is being slept on. Among the most productive defensive playmakers in the ACC, Giles-Harris racked up 313 tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks across his final three seasons in Durham.
Giles-Harris is arguably the best processor in the class at linebacker. He quickly and accurately diagnoses plays while taking excellent angles to the football. He is also a standout finisher who does well to square up, wrap up and bring his feet through contact. I love how he flows to the football, mirroring the running back but also not getting sucked in too far and guarding against cutback lanes. He is extremely gap-savvy.
He doesn't feature elite range and athletic ability, but his mental processing and tackling skills are tremendous. He is a superb shallow zone defender that sharply reads the backfield and works into throwing lanes while taking good angles to cut off running backs slipping out of the backfield.
A team in need of a MIKE linebacker should snatch him up on Day Two and prosper."
Giles-Harris is my favorite LB from the draft. I can't believe we picked him up in UDFA. He has a huge chance to make the team.
I think the Jags will add Kyle Rudolph via trade with the Vikings.

Cunningham is a little better as a receiver, but Blue has been the Texans 3rd downs RB and has plenty of catches. He's also great with the blitz pickup, so I don't see any issues with him in that spot. Blue doesn't fumble, and he's much better actually rushing than Cunningham.
On Ogbuehi, I'm thinking all of his issues would be covered up playing inside, and he has played RT if they ever need him there in a clinch.
I'm convinced after Capers and Wash get together and hash out a plan that we'll see Allen in the SAM much more than you're thinking. The only times you'll see him at DE is when we're in the nickel or dime and don't have a SAM out there.

Receiving stats tell a different story.
The 3rd down role will be interesting to watch. I hoped it would be manned by someone more dynamic than either of these guys, but I'd put my money on Cunningham over Blue twice on Sunday.
(05-08-2019, 12:27 AM)TJBender Wrote: [ -> ]I'm not going to try and do a 53 right now because I'm tired and lazy and that takes work. I will say at a first glance that I think Michael Walker has a wide open door to make this team as a return specialist, because using the top two WRs to handle returns is unnecessarily risky. I think Blue loses his spot. That far down the depth chart, you better have special teams value or be a highly-promising role player. He is neither, but Cunningham is a special teams ace and the coaching staff loves Williams, so unless they decide to keep five to make up for not carrying a fullback, Blue is out.
I'm pretty sure you have the Jags keeping nine on the OL, which I would agree with, but I've been drinking and counting names is hard. Ogbuehi is on a one-year, vet minimum contract, so he's vulnerable (good, he should be). I'm guessing that ninth OL spot comes down to Ogbuehi and Wester. Last year, the Jags saw what happens when you lack experienced depth on the OL. I'd expect a guy like Stallings or McDermott to make the practice squad, but I think we'll see more experience on the OL this season just in case four guys get hurt and the fifth plays so badly that you wish he were.
Koyack is totally replaceable in every way. Even O'Shaughnessey isn't bulletproof. He's got $400K guaranteed ($100K signing bonus, $300K of salary) so someone would have to really blow him away to steal that spot. Koyack might make it, might not, Jimmy O'Longname most likely will.
You have too many of the same names in different places on the DL. That [BLEEP] was hard enough with the offensive line. I'm not doing it again. For the purposes of this post, let's just assume that I agree with you completely on the defensive line.
I don't think the Jags are keeping seven linebackers. I'm pretty sure you have seven. I think Smith, Jack, Ryan, Allen and Williams are locked in. That leaves the other umpteen trillion linebackers on the roster to compete for the last spot.
Wait, no, there is disagreement on the DL. I don't see how Smoot makes this team again. I just don't see it. I think the team would sooner give his spot to McCray, the kid we drafted in round seven or a UDFA. Or even a seventh linebacker, jeez, Smoot has had his chances to get on the field and do something. Anything. He hasn't. It's time to move on.
I'll make an incredibly bold prediction: Zedrick Woods will pull a Marlon McCree and start at free safety. He flies, he can hit, but he can also drop back into a deep zone and let the play come to him. There's not really anyone impressive ahead of him on the depth chart at that position, and he's got a pretty clean shot at a starting job if he steps up and takes it.
Also, Dawaune Smoot sucks.
Nothing unreasonable here. ^ I don't share your disdain (entirely) for Smoot, but your points are considerations that are not lost on me.
One explanation: The 7 LB thing is about special teams. That's a DeCamillis hallmark.
Cunningham is a ST ACE!! I think that coupled with comparable receiving ability to Blue pushes him onto the roster. We'll keep 6 LB's not sure if Josh Allen will technically count as one of those 6, but i strongly suspect our depth will be 4 core ST's guys rather than linebackers in the classic sense.
As far as the DL I think it breaks down as follows:
RDE: Yannick, Josh Allen, Lerentee McCray
DT: Taven Bryan, Dontavious Russell
NT: Marcell Dareus, Abry Jones
LDE: Campbell, Smoot
because of Calais ability to play inside at the 3 technique, I think they go with 4 DT's and 3 who are more "Nose Tackle" Types with an emphasis on soaking up blocks and defending the run. I think Smoot makes the team but he needs a good camp, will most likely be inactive on gamedays, McCray is our ST's captain and will return in that role and offer depth as a pass rusher.

Yeah. Anything is possible, but I'd be fairly surprised to see Blue beat out Cunnungham as a third down guy. If Blue scrapes onto the roster, it's probably because Fournette or Armstead is banged up.
There's a reason why Cunningham has 3 seasons with 26 pass targets or more (high of 52) and Blue barely reached 20 targets in one lone season. Don't be fooled by a similar catch rate. Cunningham is a better receiver and he's better after the catch.

That was my thinking. Although they wouldn't have drafted Oliver unless they liked him, it is unrealistic to expect him to be a major contributor right away. Jeff Lageman, probably the most knowledgeable local analyst of football talent, indicated that he watched a lot of tape on Oliver and considers him a project. He was not negative about Oliver in the long-term, but Foles needs someone with experience at this postion next season. If the price is right, I really hope they pull the trigger on this.

I'm not advocating trading for Rudolph. I was attempting to answer a question.
I'm not certain what he's looking for.
I think Oliver will be a real contributor as a move TE before we reach the bye-week if not right away - and I like Swaim in the in-line role.
I also like that they seem to be looking for a good lead-blocking H-Back.
I'm not feeling desperate at the TE spot, but it is a bit thin on paper since we are counting on youth and a couple of journeymen types to perform.
Rudolph wouldn't make financial sense for the Jags unless the vikes release him - and even then some team will likely want to pay him more than the Jags can responsibly offer.
