Given Foles current injury and history of injuries coupled with Minshew's knee injury in Denver and groin injury that cropped up two weeks ago they'll more than likely keep him until next year. But yeah, as most have cited already. Seems like another hasty decision to throw a 5th RD pick away. They did it with Kessler. They did it with Hyde.

Maybe Coughlin hates the 5th RD?
Keep him for when we trade Foles in the off-season.  Cool

You are misunderstanding the simple criticism. We all know a backup is still needed, you just don’t piss away a 5th for a talent like Dobbs.
Keep him and run 3 QB. Foles is injury prone. Simple.

Carlos Hyde was pissing away a fifth-round pick. Josh Dobbs is a QB who would be starting for the Steelers right now if Mason Rudolph hadn't been sitting there in round three, a round later than expected. They didn't offload Dobbs because he's crap, they offloaded him because he didn't have a place there as a future starter, but they weren't about to cut a guy that was their heir apparent a year ago. If Dobbs is unceremoniously cut as soon as Foles come back, then yes, that was a stupid trade. If he's kept around and developed to replace Foles as the backup in 2021, or he plays well enough in the preseason to get that fifth round pick back (or better), that's hardly a bad pick.

It's hard to find a cheap QB in trade, especially if your QB is out for two months. What would you have preferred, bringing back Tanner Lee?
At the time of the trade we had no idea how well Minshew was going to play.
Get whatever you can for him. Wont be much.

Yes.
Keep him on the 53 and make decisions next year.

Honestly, the only option at this point.

I actually like the kid's potential.  Three different squealers fans I know were very sorry to see him go.

My first choice would be to keep him on the roster just in case (God forbid) of an injury to Foles and/or Minshew.  Make a decision after the season as far as which direction to go at QB.  In a "perfect scenario" perhaps trade Foles and draft another young QB to compete for a backup job behind Minshew.

Second choice would be to release him and if he clears waivers sign him to the practice squad.

Last choice would be to release him and move on.

+1 If Foles comes back as QB1 and gets drilled again we need a 3rd QB on standby for sure. No question.
As I said before, I would hang on to him to let him compete next pre-season for a roster spot as a backup.  Possibly trade Foles in the off-season and draft another potential backup QB to compete.  As much as I hate to say it, a team like the Titans might be willing to trade for Foles as would other teams with poor QB play (Tampa Bay).
We made that trade in week 2 right? If they like his potential a 5th rounder isn’t too bad. Needed someone to step in if Minshew got hurt or imploded.
Play Dobbs at TE
By the time Foles is back, the trade deadline will have passed, so trading is a moot point. I wouldn't cut Dobbs when Foles returns. I like having 3 quarterbacks on the roster. It's the most important position. I've felt that only having one backup at quarterback feels like Russian roulette.

As for next year, Dobbs is low cost. Bring him to camp and see if he can win a roster spot. What's the harm?
Dobbs is one of the best pre season QBs in the leage so next year we will probably have all 3. Im good with that

Yes.

You'd make a great GM. Sign a guy you know sucks because you don't want to spend a draft pick on a guy who's consistently played well in preseason action throughout his career.

Trading Foles this offseason saves a little over 3 million towards the 2020 cap, so we might want to do that.
