Mike Smith doesn't move the needle for me. 

 

I'm intrigued by Scott Linehan.  I think he could have this offense humming in no time.

At this point, I might be tempted to roll the dice and pray that Josh McD has learned from his mistakes in Denver.

If I remember correctly, wasn't he a name when we hired Gus? Or am I thinking the OC hire?

You also have to look at other potential vacancies next year and place ourselves on that list of attractiveness for potential candidates.

His time in Los Louis concerns me.  

Will we be attractive? While we have talent, we also will have a lameduck GM who will be in a win-or-else situation in the last year of his contract and a QB who may has not definitively established himself as a franchise guy. I'm not sure if we'll be as attractive as we think because of these two factors. Khan will have to extend Caldwell at the very least to give coaches some sense of job security.

I want Saban. It didn't work the first time for him, but I think he'd do better now. Or Harbaugh, but I doubt he'd come here.

Just because we have talent doesn't mean we will be an automatic hotbed for coaching vacancies. Yes, I understand there are only 32 HC jobs in the NFL, but there will be other vacancies this off season.

Saban would be my #1 choice but I can't see him leaving Alabama, especially to come here.


People trash his stint in Miami but it is actually impressive what he did at Miami. He managed to have Miami be competitive in Bill Belichecks division and did it with Joey Harrington at QB.

Detroit, Miami and the Minnesota all had big offensive upticks during his tenure.  His work with Stafford, Culpepper and now Prescott is a big factor for me also. 

 

But yes, the rams stint is concerning in terms of his ability as a HC versus being an O.C.

It still ticks me off we failed to get Andy Reid when he was available. Nonetheless, a top HC is not going to be available for us so we might as well accept the fact we will be getting a second tier HC and Mike Smith has the experience to lead this team to playoff contention. I'll take that.

Regarding the topic, I wouldn't mind Mike Smith, either.

There are a lot of complaints about our soft zone defense...

 

Lovie made Tampa's D worse.

 

Sometimes the old retreads aren't a good idea.

 

 

 

And I'm kinda with the people who want an offensive guy. 

I want someone that I'm totally confident in their film studying capabilities.  We need to out-strategize teams in the future and I'm not certain we've done that since the Coughlin era.

 

Given the above, Saban would work or someone that's worked for Belichick like McDaniels.   My #1 choice is Todd Haley because I think he could fix Bortles and truly understands how to play to your strengths and offset Oline weaknesses.

Andy Reid wouldn't have run it like we did in the 4th quarter.

I also like Mike Smith. He did win for awhile with Atlanta. Caldwell is familiar with him also. 

I don't want us to look for a defensive guy or an offensive guy.

I want us to look for a coach who just demands execution at the highest level. Not a passionate speaker, but a man who clearly knows the X's and O's.

Mike Smith isnt a good coach lol
