I'd prefer to not see Mike Smith bungling clock management on our sideline next season. Anyways, Atlanta's powerhouse offense was the reason his coaching record is so good and he didn't really have anything to do with that as a coach. Their defense lacked talent, but he didn't coach them up either.

We're not gonna get the sexy hire. We put a lot of effort in our last coaching search and we ended up with Gus the ice cream man
Best we can hope for is a guy, although not elite, knows what he's doing and can bring the best out of the talent we have

The thing is, we've at least seen what Smitty can do with a team filled with solid-to-good players. The question then is that his ceiling? Or can he take a defense with actual talent and do something with it? I don't know if I want to go back to that Tampa Cover 2, but we actually have the personnel to run that defense moving forward.
Yannick at RE, 1-gap DTs (Malik, Sen, Day), Fowler at LE
Telvin at WLB, Jack MLB (IMO is a perfect Cover 2 MLB, since he has the speed to drop deep and defend that in between area between the safeties playing half)
Ramsey, Prince, and Colvin can all be a good fit for Cover 2 (House probably becomes the odd man out here if we switch).
Gipson obviously would be fine as the FS, and we can hope that Sample would finally be healthy (he would be an ideal Cover 2 SS) Or we can draft a SS

I think his ceiling is similar to his old boss in Del Rio, which is an average coach. Someone who won't fail if they have decent players, but not someone who will overachieve with a mediocre roster.

I don't even know if that's true. I mean, Smitty got a heckuva lot of mileage from some players in that defense. He's no Belichick, I don't think. But some guys do improve after some time away and getting another crack at it. I haven't followed the Falcons or the Bucs enough with his defenses there, but the thing that I remember a lot from his defenses here was that they always came to play. Players were often in the right spots (they just weren't always capable of making the play).
Rarely do I recall our defenses getting *caught*.

Keep dreaming. He's been retired for how long now? Same applies to Gruden and Dungy. These guys cushy TV jobs where they work one day a week and still make millions of dollars. They aren't going back to coaching.
