Woo we spent money.... woo … bah

In reality I didn't watch much Browns football so I don't know what to think.

Bingo.  Jack has all the physical tools.  Unfortunately, he's lacking on the mental side.

Contract wise though. Did we win this one with Jack's extension? We paid him based on the ILB role but he'll be moved back outside. Need time to crunch them numbers.

Jags02 probably already has them up there with the big man in the sky.

I would think it would make it less likely since it removes a need.

Maybe we'll play Nickel full time?

Def wouldn’t rule out there being more nickel than we’ve seen thus far.
To be honest, I never heard of him before.  Should be better than Jack at MLB.

Also prevents us from reaching on a LB in the draft now. V happy

From 2018 season ^

I'd still draft Simmons if he was available at #9 by some freaky draft related aberration.
Is it possible that we're shipping out the pieces that don't fit as we transition to a new base scheme on Defense? If our achilles heel was run defense, why sign a MLB who excels in coverage and blitzing (traits that are IDEAL for a 3-4 ILB). Could we see Taven Bryan play DE in a 3-4 base, Jack & Schobert at ILB with Josh Allen standing up at OLB/Edge?

The more likely scenario is that they think any tackling issues are coachable and signing him to play the middle allows Jack to play his natural Will spot for the first time in his career where he just has to run sideline to sideline and make plays. With Jack not having to lead and get everyone lined up I think he's due for a stellar season!!
This was a good signing since he's only 26. I'd be very surprised if their 1st pick is not either Brown or Kinlaw unless Okudah drops to them.

Bingo.

If they draft a LB it’ll be a depth/ST guy.

I would hope so but I'm not holding my breath.
A lot of money invested in linebackers now!

That was my first reaction to the news. However after thinking about it some more I think Simmons could very well be in play at 9. I think if the rumors about the jaguars going to an odd front or true then there still room for Simmons at 9. In that scenario Simmons and Allen would be outside backers with Jack and schobert would be our inside backers. Under that scenario ipsy the jaguars trade and God quay if Simmons is the guy at 9.

No way! Jeez. Had no idea. When, how? RIP Matey. Man!!

I think you're giving Todd Wash way too much credit and benefit of the doubt here. We're just rebuilding and they sucked major [BLEEP] last year against the run game so having $20M+ tied up at CB and DE didn't make much sense. I still think Ngakoue ends up being traded just before or during the draft though.

They're going to try and shore up the LB core first. As it was evident more than anywhere else that they simply couldn't get it done. And they look to refortify the front four by adding Brown or Kinlaw early more than likely on opening night. I am actually pretty high on Kinlaw. I think his value is right on the money there at No. 9 overall.

Especially if Brown, Okudah, Simmons & Wirfs are off the board. I really wouldn't mind seeing Jefferson or Ruggs though at No. 20 to compliment Chark. Minshew still needs help on this offense. Hopefully they pursue Cordy Glenn or work some kind of deal out with Washington for Trent Williams.

You beat me to it. To me it makes sense. I saw something where Simmons indicated he wanted to be an edge rusher and being an edge rusher in a 3-4 makes perfect sense he's got the size and the link that you want at he's what 6 for 2:40? That's perfect for 3/4 outside backer and with his speed Eagan Eagan certainly turn the corner and pressure quarterback.that said switching to a 3-4 is not something I would take very lightly here. Even assuming we could get Simmons we'd still need a down lineman to run a 3-4 and I don't think we have that. We certainly don't have to nose tackle although we're supposedly eyeing Utah's leki fotu who would be an ideal 3/4 nose tackle.

I just don't see it. I would have believed the switch over to a 3 - 4 had they parted ways with Wash and went after Wade Phillips this off season. But they doubled down on the 3rd and 3 zone defense guru instead. I have said it numerous times. And I'll continue to harp on it.

Todd Wash is trash. Even when this defense was teeing off on lesser offensive talent in 2017 you still saw a lot of philosophical issues on the football field and you still heard a lot of [BLEEP] and moaning from the football players about how they were or weren't being utilized on defense.

I know the injuries were horrible last year on defense. Coaching can only get you so far with street free agents being thrown into your starting line-up. However, with all that said. He still has made some of the dumbest [BLEEP] calls over the years in certain games. And that was when he had talent to work with.

He really should have been canned with Hackett. I guess Marrone doesn't have a good history with defensive minded coaches or feels confident enough to approach anyone better. But my God. Wade Phillips is still on the market. He has to be somewhat better than [BLEEP] Todd Wash.

So the run defense was garbage and we bring a dude who is not very good for that, great!

I mean, I'd be ok if we had another 2 LBs who were good at stopping the run but...
Luke warm signing to put it mildly
