I do. Especially at WR. As it stands now, our receiving unit is no better than it was last season.
You keep repeating that. But it simply is not true. Kirk is better than every WR we have on the roster. Zay Jones is at least the 3rd best, depending on how much Marvin still has in the tank. I agree that we're still looking for an X than can be a difference maker. But if they manage to draft one, the unit will be head and shoulders better than last year, accounting for Chark's injury.
I
vehemently disagree. When Chark was healthy, he was an average X receiver. Kirk is an average slot receiver. That is a wash. We lose an average player at one WR spot and we gain one at another. Zay Jones is nothing. He was a 4th string receiver with the Raiders until Henry Ruggs was released and he did next to nothing when he was in games. Marvin Jones sucks, Laviska Shenault shouldn't even be employed and Agnew is coming off a hip injury. I see no difference between last season's group of receivers coming into the season and this year's group. We may even be slightly worse since Jones is a year older and Agnew is coming off an injury.

Marvin Jones doesn't suck. He has been one of the most consistent WRs in the for about the last 8 years. I wish we could get a few more of those sucky WRs

Consistent WR's get open and make plays. None of our WR's did that last season. Jones was decent when he was with the Lions, but those days are gone. He has nothing left. He just a waste of salary cap money. You have the bar set very, very low.
Kirk is better based on....?
Having way better WRs to take the heat off him? The best QB in the league throwing to him?
He's going to be average here. At best.

Kyler Murray the best QB in the league? ???
Old AJ green way bettwr than him? ???
Lay off the bottle, it's early.
Lol man I can’t wait to see the crow eaten by the Kirk Haters. Looking forward to this season!

Kirk is fast and talented. Yes, he was vastly overpaid, but that doesn't diminish his talent.
Kyler is not one of the best QBs. He's overhyped because he's a young dual threat, but he sucked without Hopkins, who's an all-time great at least at pushing off without getting penalized. Minshew had a better rookie year than Kyler.

He's a good number 2 WR. He was WR 1 last year and was covered by the other teams best corner. He was the same WR last year as when he was with the Lions only being defended by the teams best corner, a rookie QB, and horrible play calling. If you think he was good when he was with the Lions then you think he is good now. He's like Chark, a good number 2

Best QB in the league? Murray isn't top 5 and probably not even top 10

That dude must be Urban Meyer because I think he believes Kirk used to play for the Bucs….

lol, hes a little confused
Wr room is better than last year and esp because we didnt have chark for most of the year.
We will add at least one receiver they feel will fit the scheme. Relax.
I think we will be pleasantly suprised.
Marty summed up my answers to the original questions very well.

If it is a historically bad draft for kickers that might change my mind. However, I will say that the fact that we have 6 draft picks in the 6th and 7th rounds this year factors heavily into my position. I don't see 6 players drafted that late making our 53 man roster and we need more competition at kicker. Even if a player is projected to be a UDFA, that doesn't guarantee that the Jaguars get him. The kicker may choose to sign with a different team. If we think one kicker is better than the rest, it still would likely make sense to use a late round pick in order to lock up our first choice at kicker. If there are hypothetically multiple kickers who we consider to be virtually equal prospects, then yeah, it makes sense to skip it.
I do. Especially at WR. As it stands now, our receiving unit is no better than it was last season.
I don't see a sixth or seventh round wide receiver making this roster. NFL teams typically keep six wide receivers. There is no way the Jaguars are cutting Christian Kirk or Zay Jones after giving them $37 million and $14 million in guaranteed money. Agnew makes the team largely for special teams. I'm assuming the Jaguars draft a wide receiver in the first five rounds (probably in rounds two or three). Marvin Jones Jr. had 832 yards and 4 touchdowns last year and I think he will be more productive if some other receiver on the team can serve as the #1 instead of him. That's five wide receivers.
It leaves Shenault. I don't cut Shenault for a sixth rounder. I know you love to say "he can't catch", but he only had 3 drops in 2020. If he can do it in 2020, he can do it in 2022. He has 1,219 receiving yards through two seasons. You think a sixth rounder is likely to beat that? History says no. Excluding Shenault, the Jaguars have drafted 31 wide receivers in their history. Only 3 out of 31 had more than Shenault's 1,219 yards at this point in their career and two of those players only barely beat it. Allen Robinson (a second rounder) is the only drafted receiver out of 31 to have had more than 1,300 yards through his first two years. If we're looking specifically at late round picks, it is even worse. The Jaguars have had 17 wide receivers drafted in the 5th round or later. 15 out of the 17 finished their career with fewer than 500 receiving yards. I know there are occasional surprises, but you have to be realistic in your expectations at that point in the draft. I don't like our odds with a late round pick. I prefer to give a former second rounder an opportunity to see if he can develop.
p.s. Keep in mind that I didn't even mention Treadwell. I don't think he makes the 53 man roster, but that late round draft pick would have to beat him out as well.

I'm hoping for a plate. I haven't really spoken against Kirk, but I'm skeptical. He really flashed in his first couple of years, but doesn't seem to have taken the next step aside from his new salary.
And I don't think he was any better than Chark, who we apparently could have kept around for a lot less dough.
Now, if we had signed both of those guys, I'd feel a lot more comfy right now.

Pederson said he wanted him back, but I think it's apparent Chark wanted out given all the organizational dysfunction with Meyer. Who can blame him?

He signed for one year at $10mil. I read somewhere that we had offered him a 1-yr $7mil contract. Speculation through the season was that he could be had for $12mil. I figured he'd want more.
My point is that we low-balled him. There's no way he turns down another $2mil from the Jags if it had been offered. Seems much more like we didn't want him, and it makes me a bit sad.

I agree on the outside looking in we maybe low balled him. Realistically, I am thinking it was more of his agent working to get the player the most he could. What if the Jags waited a bit and seeing other teams below 7 million offered that to keep him. The other teams countered getting him to 10 million. When the bidding got to 10 million the Jags bowed out. Actually that could very well be the case.

I haven't heard or read anything about what we did or don't offer Chark and I personally doubt we lowballed him looking at the other FA contracts from this offseason coupled with three different comments from Pederson about trying to sign him.

I think it was just coach speak by Pederson that he wanted Chark back. By free agency standards, Chark signed for a very modest, low risk contract with Detroit. The way the Jaguars were throwing around money, they could have easily offered a more favorable contract than what he got. The Jaguars gave $14 million in guaranteed money to Zay Jones.
I also don't see much support for the theory that Chark didn't want to be here. If it was Urban Meyer, he's no longer the coach. If he just wanted to play for a winner, why go to Detroit?
I think Pederson/Baalke had low interest in Chark. That's too bad because I think Chark is under-rated. His stats are low in part because of injury and also because he mostly had awful quarterbacks throwing to him. I could easily see him bouncing back to his pro-bowl alternate level or even exceeding it. It wouldn't surprise me if down the road that Chark is added to the list of former players where Jaguars fans say "Why in the world did we let him go?!?".

Pederson brought it up in three separate meetings with members of the press.
I don't think he does that if he's just paying lip service.
I think he wanted to get it done, and being vocal about it may have been his way of pressing Baalke to make it happen.
