How many years have we shot ourselves in the feet trying to appear the smartest in the room?
Take genuine, actual, factual football players who excel AT THEIR POSITION. You want pass rush, take a guy who gets in QB faces. You want turnovers, take a ballhawking CB. You want pass pro? You take a behemoth who doesn't let anyone past.

Save the projects for later.

You make it sound so easy.  lol

Funny how common sense works that way. Overthinking things has been burdening us for as long as you've been a member of this board, if not longer.

No doubt.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I was worried about Hutch after he got buried against Georgia in the CFB Championship.  And honestly, Hutch hasn't really proven he's that much better than Walker.  It's just that Hutch has a better concept around him, while our players are flailing with a Coordinator that is not NFL Caliber.  Jaguars players are at a huge disadvantage.

Nevertheless, we took Walker.  So you better have a DC who's smart enough to plan how best to use a tweener like Walker.  And in the month of September, it looked right.  But then when offenses adjusted, our DC had no clue what to do, and instead of coaching.  Instead of developing talent.  Our DC just kept running the same thing straight into the wall.

Square peg.  Round Hole?  Solution?  Grind the peg to eventually be withered down to fit into desired hole.

Ehhhhh, I'm complaining now for no reason.  But it is concerning.  I still think Walker can be a great player for the Jaguars.  But he's not being used properly because our DC isn't recognizing where to best place his most talented players.  We're not getting the best out of our squad.  And that includes Walker and Lloyd.
Why would anyone think Walker was a great pick.  In his last year at Georgia he only had one sack.  Our GM picked him because he looked like he could rush a passer.

They picked him cause of his physical traits

The guy still could be anything...development is key

And Caldwell is doing none of that imo

Looked pretty good back in high school though.  Here is the film Baalke watched prior to the #1 selection back in April.

Probably doesn't want to get too good too quickly.  Doesn't want the life of a local celebrity that can't enjoy dinner without people wanting autographs and such.
Walker can be salvaged. Will be up to his off season approach though. Plenty of guys to network with to get better. To be great you need to imitate greatness. Head out West and work with Aaron Donald and the Bosa Brothers.

anyone that focuses on him and allen is in for a bag of laughs

i focus on them when we are on defense, they get stonewalled so hard it's hilarious.
To prove my original point even further, his pass rush where he nearly had the sack he was playing 3 technique.  Boseli breaks it down in the video

About 39:30 into the video

Taven Bryan has 2.5 sacks too. That was another project drafted because of his physical abilities. Bryan was at least drafted at the end of the 1st.

Passed on Lamar Jackson. Yikes.

Be honest though...  You'd rather have a QB like Trevor Lawrence.

Lawrence is a 20 year QB.

Josh Allen is a RPO QB.  I'd rather have a real pocket passer that has mobility when needed.

Josh Allen, Russel Wilson, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Justin Feilds, are great for 5 years.  But once their legs fail 'em...  It's pretty much over.

Yeah, Taven Bryan was a terrible pick.  Not saying that it wasn't.  Just saying, that crap house pick lead to Trevor Lawrence...  20 years good luck after 5 years of misery.  Seems about right in terms of delayed gratification.  Then again, if Baalke is still around, we may just Andrew Luck our franchise QB.

To be fair Bryan's the type of player you get at the end of the first.

You want to draft prospects with measurables who produced in a big conference but they go in the top 10 if not top 5.

At the end of rd 1 you're taking people with measurables but not production, people with production but not measurables or measurables and production but for a small school against nobodies.

I think the Bryan pick was fine even though it didn't work.
Anyone remember in the preseason when we ran that nascar package with allen/walker on the outside and key/smoot on the inside? Have we even tried that since the season started?
Yeah seems like the defensive coordinator is not able to creatively use these guys in a meaningful way. Not saying it’s an easy task, but we haven’t seen much creative.
I also don’t understand why our sack leader Smoot isn’t used more

Oh, agreed but that kind of implies Walker should have been a late first rounder, doesn't it? Or at the very least not really the first overall. It's a shame we had the first overall when there was no obvious number one overall pick.
